BROOM-HEAD.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LESTER R. REEDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at W'alkersville, in the county of Lewis and State of Test Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Broom-Heads, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved broom head which is adapted to be used in connection with a detachable handle and with straw which may be renewed from time to time as the same becomes worn so that my improved broom head may be continued indefinitely in service, and the said invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is an elevation of a. broom head constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. l is a vertical transverse sectional view of the same on a reduced scale. Fig. 2 is a detail elevation showing the opposite side from that shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view taken on the plane indicated by figure 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4L is a detail vertical sectional view on one side of the frame of the broom. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view, showing the upper end of the brush and the cap thereon secured thereto.

In accordance with my invention, I provide a frame 1 which is here shown as comprising a cross bar 2 and side bars 3 which extend downwardly and outwardl from the ends of the cross bar, the latter eing provided at its center with a socket a for the reception of one end of a handle 5 which is detachably secured in the said socket as by means of a suitable screw 6 or other securing devices. The frame 1 is adapted to receive the broom straw 7 and is provided on one side with bars 8 to bear against one side of the broom straw. The said frame has its side bars 3 provided, near their lower ends, with transverse portions 9 which have outwardly extending pairs of ears 10 and are further provided with slots 11 which constitute guide ways and adjusting worms 12 are mounted for revolution between the pairs of ears 10, the worms being provided at their ends with ournals 13 which are mounted in bearing openings with which the ears 10 are provided. In connection with the frame 1, I also provide a clamping member which is here shown as an open yoke or Specification of Letters Patent.

frame 14 to bear against the side of the broom straw opposite that against which the bars 8 bear, the said clamping member being provided at its ends with projecting arms 15 which operate in the guide slots 11 and the outer ends of which engage the threads of the worms 12 so that by turning the said worms in the appropriate direction the clamping frame or member 14L may be moved toward or from the bars 8 so as to clamp the broom straw in the broom head or release the same therefrom for renewal after the straws have become worn. Moreover, this construction enables the broom straw to be adjusted longitudinally in the broom head from time to time as they become worn so as to greatly increase the life of the straws.

It will be obvious from the foregoing that my improved broom head permits of the renewal of the broom straw from time to time as the same becomes worn and may also be used successively in connection with a number of handles so that the breaking of a handle or the wearing out of the broom straw does not terminate the usefulness of the broom head but the latter may be used indefinitely.

In practice the brush 7 used in my improved broom head has its straws assembled and secured together by cords or stitches, and on the upper end of the brush is a cap 16 which is made of sheet metal and is of the size and shape to enable it to receive the upper end of the brush, the top of said cap seating on the butts of the straw and the side walls of the cap being provided at their lower edge with serrations 18 which are inturned to bear against the straw so as to secure the cap on the brush. In practice it is proposed to provide a number of such brushes for use in broom heads, so as one brush becomes worn out another can readily be substituted and used in its stead.

What is claimed is 1. The herein described broom head comprising a frame to receive and bear against one side of the straw, said frame having transversely disposed portions at its sides provided with pairs of outwardly extending ears and further provided with slots, a clamp to bear against the opposite side of the straw and having arms at its sides to move in said slots and extend between the said ears and adjusting worms having their bearings in the said pairs of ears, said adjusting worms engaging the outer ends of said arms for the purpose set forth.

2. The herein described broom head comprising a frame to receive and bear against one side of the straw, said frame consisting of a cross bar having a socket for the reception of a broom stick, side bars which extend downwardly from the ends of said cross bar, and bars connecting said side bars and to bear against one side of the broom straw,

said side bars being provided with transverse portions having outwardly extending pairs of ears and further provided with slots between said ears, a clamp to bear against the opposite side of the straw and having outwardly projecting arms operating in said slots and adjusting worms having their bearings in the said pairs of ears, said adjusting worms engaging the outer ends of said adjusting arms.
