To all whom fit may concern:

Be it known that I, BURTON C. PosroN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chillicothe, in the county of Ross and State of Chio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Couches and Beds, of which the following is a specilication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

My invention relates to improvements in a combined couch and bed.

The object of my invention is to provide a davenport couch without visible signs that the same contains beneath the seat a full bed spring and mattress, which by a single operation may be converted to a full size bed as complete as the ordinary bedstead or folded from a bed to a couch by one operation.

Another object of my invention is to provide a more simple, cheap and efficient couch which when opened the mattress is in its proper position, and when folding the bed back to a couch the mattress nee-ds no adjustment.

In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view of the couch folded out into bed form. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the couch when used as a couch. Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the folding sea-t and mattress carrying member in its extended posit-ion. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view similar to Fig. 1, only showing the seat in a partly extended position.

Referring now to the drawings, 1 represents the ends of the ordinary davenport couch which are connected by the two

strips

2 and 3 adjacent their upper rear edges and around which is formed the upholstered back 4, all of which is of the usual form. The front edges of the ends are connected by a strip 5 and the bottom at the center by a strip 6 all of which firmly secure the ends together. Couches of this character are usually six feet long and the upholstered seat two feet wide and therefore in my improved couch the bed extends lengthwise the couch. The seat 7 is of the usual upholstered form and my improved couch is made of a box-like form formed of a base 8 having the springs 9 between said base and the upholstered portion 10.

Loosely mounted upon the strip 6 is a box-like frame 11, which has in its lower end a portion of the springs 12 forming the bed Specification of Letters Patent.

when the couch is extended. The said frame, as before stated, rests loosely upon the strip 6 and at each end a link 13 is pivoted at 14 to the inner faces of the ends 1 of the couch, and said links normally extending in a horizontal position when the couch is folded. The opposite ends of the links 13 extend along the ends of the frame 11 and are provided with slots 15 in which studs or screws 16 carried by the frame 11 extend, and whereby the said frame is free to swing between the 'ends 1. The frame 11, as shown in Fig. 2, normally rests in a horizontal position and hinged to the outer end of said frame at 17 is a second frame'18, which is shorter than the frame 11 and therefore only extends rearwardly far enough to be in a vertical alinement with the upholstered back 4. Within the upper end of the frame 18 is the second section 12 of the spring and said frames 11 and 18 being of a box-like form to receive and hold the mattress 19, when the couch is folded and extended. The outer upper ends of the frame 18 are provided with metal plates 20, which extend horizontally outward and are pivotally connected at their outer ends to the inner face of the ends 1, as indicated at 21. In order to provide for the upholstered seat 7 and allow it to snugly lit against the ends 1 and allow of the free movement thereof, the plates 20 forming the hinges for the frame 18 are provided with the offset portions 22, as clearly shown in Fig. 3. The plates 20 or the offset portions 22 are provided with pins 21, which preferably are mounted in a metal bearing 23 carried by the ends 1. rThe plates 20, as shown, extend beyond the end of section 18, and are provided at their lower edges with laterally extending flanges 20, which extend under the frames 18 and 11, and whereby the greater portion of the weight and strain of the members 11 and 18 is taken off the hinge 17 and the plate 20, the flange 20 extending under the frame 11, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

The frames 11 and 18, as shown in the drawings, form the body or mattress receiving frame when folded outwardly and the width of the two being equal to the ordinary bed. The frame 8 of the seat 7 rests directly upon the frame 18. The rear end of the frames 8 and 18 are hinged together by hinges 24, which are preferably of a hasp type whereby as clearly shown in Figs. 1

and 3, access may be readily had to the box-like frame 8 of the seat 7 for repairing the springs of the seat when desired. The outer end of the frame 8 is provided at each end with hinges 25, which are riveted or otherwise rigidly secured to the plates 26. The lower ends of the plate 26 are riveted or otherwise secured to hinges 27 by the strip 5. These two sets of hinges are so arranged that the upper ones swing inwardly, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. This arrangement of the hinges is such as to allow the seat 7 to drop down in the position shown in Fig. 1 and also allow the covering 28 of the seat to extend down and be secured to the strip 5, whereby all of the interior of the couch is hidden and producing a couch of this character having the appearance of the ordinary couch. This dropping of the seat also throws the greater amount of weight thereof on the outer end frame 18 to prevent the mattress frame from tilting backwardly as the larger amount of weight is on the inside of the hinge or pivot thereof.

The side of the frame 8 is provided at each end with loops 29 having the extended ends 30 in which are carried the inwardly extending pins 31. In said loops are metal strips or feet 32, which have slots 33 therein and in which the pins 31 extend. By this arrangement it will be seen that the strips extend -into the loop and are held against lateral movement and form feet to support the outer endV of the seat frame 8, and the frame 18 carried thereby, and thus supporting said frame in a horizontal position. The feet by means of the slot may be pulled outwardly from within the loop and swing around in a horizontal position and moved horizontally so that a portion of the feet are on each side of the loop, and thus the feet are locked in the horizontal position and allow the seat portion to be folded over and bring the feet in beyond the cushion as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. In order to provide means for taking hold of the seat for extending the couch, I provide a loop 34 which is made of the same material as the couch is upholstered in, and therefore does not materially mar the looks of the couch, as shown in Fig. 2 it is in such a position that it would be hardly noticeable.

The couch when in the position shown in Fig. 2 forms a davenport which has all the appearances and qualifications of the ordinary davenport. It being desirable to extend the same to form a bed, simply take hold of the loop 34 and pull upwardlyV thereon. This pulls the seat frame 8 upwardly and the rear edge being hinged to the frame 18, the frame 18 is rocked upon its pivot 21, as shown in Fig. 4, and the frames 8 and 18 are moved as one. The upward movement of the frame 18 lifts the outer end of the frame 11 owing to the hinge connection 17, and the said frame 11 is tilted upon the pins 16, mounted in the slots 15 of the links 13, as shown in Fig. 4. The links are held in the horizontal position by engagement with the strips 6. The continued movement of the seat tilts the frame 11 until the two

36 and 37 come together whereby the frame 18 is gradually raised causing the links 13 to be raised and the pins 16 traveling in the slot 15 until the two frames 11 and 18 are in a horizontal position as shown in Fig. 1. The pins 16 have then reached approximately the lower ends of the slots and the links are in such a position that the frame 11 is locked against downward movement by the ordinary pressure thereon, such as the weight of a person. The seat frame 8 by the hinged link or plate 26 has dropped down and by the hasp and hinge connection the frame is held in the oblique position. The feet being extended, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3,

`the seat frame is supported and the frame 18 supported thereby.

The frames 11 and 18 being of a box form the mattress is. within the same and folded as shown 1n Fig. 2, and when the couch is extended the mattress opens or unfolds with the frames and the bed is ready for use.

The frames 11 and 18 being box-like it will be seen that the mattress is held therein when the couch is folded and thus the mattress is not touchedvwhen extending or folding the couch.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A couch of the character described, comprising a couch frame, a spring carrying frame formed of two sections hinged together, the upper sect-ion hinged to the lower section at its outer edge and a movable seat frame hinged to the rear edge of the upper spring frame and the outer edge of the couch frame.

2. A couch of the character described, comprising a couch frame, a spring carrying frame formed of two sections hinged together and adapted to rest one upon the other and the lower frame hinged to the couch frame, the upper section adapted to swing outward in a longitudinal plane with the lower frame, and a movable seat frame pivoted to the inner edge of the upper spring frame and the outer edge of the I scones outward in a horizontal plane with the lower frame, a movable seat frame pivoted to the inner edge of the upper spring frame and a double hinge connection between the inner edge of the upper spring frame and the outer edge of the couch frame.

A couch of the character described, comprising a frame, a seat frame hinged at its outer edge to said frame, a spring carrying frame pivotally connected at its outer edge to the frame and having a hinge connection at its inner edge with the inner edge of the seat frame and separate therefrom, and a second spring carrying frame pivoted at its outer end with the outer lower edge of the first spring frame.

5. A couch of the character described, comprising a frame, a seat frame hinged at its outer edge to said frame, a spring carrying frame below the seat and pivotally connected at its outer edge to the frame and having a hinge connection at its inner edge with the inner edge of the seat frame and separate therefrom, a second spring carrying frame pivoted at its outer end with the outer lower edge of the first spring frame, a link connection between the inner end of said second frame and the couch frame.

6. A couch of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat having a double hinge link connection at its outer end with the frame to allow the seat to drop down when extended, folding feet carried by the inner edge of said seat, .a spring carrying frame below the seat and pivotally connected at its outer edge to the supporting frame, a hinge connection between the inner end of said frame and seat, a second spring carrying frame hinged at its outer edge with the outer edge of the first spring frame, and a link connected to the supporting frame and having a sliding connection with the inner end of said second frame.

7. A couch of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat frame hinged at its outer end to the frame, feet carried by the inner edge of said seat frame, a spring carrying frame below the seat frame and pivotally connected at its outer edge to the supporting frame, a hinge connection between the inner end of said frame and seat frame to allow the same to fold down below the seat line, a second spring carrying frame hinged at its outer edge with the outer edge of the first spring frame, and a link connected to the supporting frame and the inner end of said second frame.

8. A couch of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat having a double hinge link connection at its outer end with the frame to allow the seat to drop down when extended, folding feet carried by the inner edge of said seat, a

spring carrying frame below the seat connected at its outer edge to the supporting frame, a hinge connection between the inner end of said frame and seat, a second spring carrying frame hinged at its outer edge with the outer edge of the first spring frame, a link connected to the supporting frame and having a sliding connection with the inner end of the said second frame, and a hinge connection between the inner end of the seat and the inner end of the first mentioned spring carrying frame.

9. A couch of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat having a double hinge connection at its outer end with the frame to allow the seat to drop down when extended, folding feet carried by the inner edge of said seat, a spring carrying frame below the seat and pivotally connected at its outer edge to the supporting frame, a hinge connection between the inner end of said frame and seat, a second spring carrying frame hinged at its outer edge with the outer edge of the first spring frame, a link connected to the supporting frame and having a sliding connection with the inner end of the said second frame, and a hinged hasp connection between the inner end of the seat and the inner end of the first mentioned spring carrying frame.

10. A couch of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat having a double hinge link connection at its outer end with the frame to allow the seat to drop down when extended, feet carried by the inner edge of said seat, a spring carrying frame below the seat and pivotally connected at its outer edge to the supporting frame, a hinged hasp connection between the inner end of the frame and the seat, a second spring carrying frame hinged at its outer edge with the outer edge of the first spring frame, links pivotally connected to the supporting frame and having slots in their outer free end, pins carried by the inner ends of the second spring carrying frame and sliding in said slots.

A couch of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat having a link connection at its outer end with the frame to allow the seat to drop down when extended, supporting means carried by the inner edge of said seat, a spring carrying frame below the seat and pivotally connected at its outer edge to the supporting frame, a hinged connection between the inner end of the frame and the seat, a second spring carrying frame hinged at its outer edge with the outer edge of the rst spring frame, and links pivotally connected to the supporting frame and having slots in their outer free ends and pins carried by the inner ends of the second spring carrying frame and sliding in said slots.

12. A couch of the character described,

13. A couch of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat frame having a link connection at its outer end with the frame, a spring carrying frame below the seat frame and separate therefrom, and ay second spring carrying frame below thev rst spring frame and hinged thereto, and pivotally connected to the supporting frame, and a flexible strip carried by the seo', ite-5;

supporting frame and connected to the seat frame and covering the hinge connection between the same.

14. A couch of the character described, comprising a supporting frame, a seat frame having a link connection at its outer end with the frame, a spring carrying 'frame below the seat frame and separate therefrom, a second spring frame below the spring frame and hinged thereto at its outer end and having a sliding link connection at its inner end with the supporting frame, a detachable hinge connection between the seat frame and the upper spring frame and a flexible stop carried by the supporting frame and connected to the seat frame and covering` the hinge connection between the same.
