Description

waited tat E. W. BRETTELL, OF ELIZABETH, NEW. JERSEY.
Letters Patent No. 95,978, dated October 19, 1869; ltntedutcd October 9, 1869.
IMPROVED DOOR-LATCH.
'.l .he Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, E. W. BRETTELL, ofthe city oi' Elizabeth, in the State of New Jersey, have mede certain Improvements in Door-Latches; and declare the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The nature-oi` my improvement consists in so constructing a latch, that the required movements for drawing and holding back, and for locking the catch, can all be conveniently effected by one knob or handle.
In the drawings- Fgure l shows the inside of the latch, with the back plate removed;
Figure 2 is an end view of inside fixtures;
Figure 3 shows catch and lever in detail; and
Figure 4, the knob-attachments and arrangements.
The same letters refer to the 'same parts in each figure.
Upon the inside end of the bolt or catch A is a square, a, with a projecting circle, s, and a circularl hole, d, through both.
A slot, c, is made in the back end, as shown in the top and back View in fig. 3.
The slot enters the hole d.
Projecting downward, with its face on a line with the inside of the slot e, is an arrn, f, having a pin, g, at its lower end.
The lever h is puton the pin g, and enters the slot e.
The spiral spring fi, while drawing and holding the A catch out, does it by means ot' the lever h., which enters the slot e, and, pressing against the shaft j that is fitted to the holeb, allows latch and shaft,knob k,
together, to slidel backward in the slot o, provided for that purpose in the front plate t of the case of the lock.
'.lihis construction allows the shaft J to have an endwise motion, back and forth, in the hole b.
()n the inner end ofthe shaitj, there is a rib, m, on either side of. which is a recess as .wide as'the slot e the edge of' the lever h, resting in either, the case may be, is held tight by the spring i.
\Vhen the knob k is shoved in, the piece n, on the shaftj, can slide over the projection 'r that is cast fast to the case, the piece 11. being just the width required to be pulled down to thc plate t, with its edge against the stop-piece r, the piece -n,\when down on one side, locking tire latch, when the latch is out, and when down on the other side oi' the stop r, it holds the latch back, when it is drawn in.
In forcing the shaft out or in by the knob lf, the lever h passes, ont of one recess, over the rib m, into the other recess, and is held there hy the spiral spring t'.
Thus, whether or not the latch is combined with a keyed lock, all the ,required movements for Fastening or unfastening the latch are made by means of a singie knob or handle.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure, is-
l. The combination ot' the tail-piece-af, with its hole b, arm 'f, pin g, and slot c, with the latch A, in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The lever h, and shaft j, with its projection n, constructed, arranged, and operated as above described and shown.
3. The combination of the shaitj and lever h with the tail-piece a and latch A, in the manner and for the purpose herein specified and shown.
li. Vv'. BREITELL.
