To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OsoAR HITFFMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pactolus, in the county of Carter and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plow-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to an improvement in cleaners for hillside plows. Plows of this type are provided with a reversible plow share which is pivotally secured to the plow standard adjacent the front end thereof and held in place by means of a catch pivoted on the rear of said standard, which catch is arranged to engage with said plow share. In plowing deep rich soil with a plow of this type the loam or soil accumulates on the free side of the plow, and this accumulation of soil must be removed before it is possible to reverse the plow share at the end of the furrow. Heretofore, the removal of the soil has been accomplished manually. The present invention is adapted to overcome this objectionable feature by providing plunger elements on each side of the plow standard, which elements in turn are provided with blades at their lower ends, which, upon being forced downwardly, remove the accumulation of soil or debris from the standard and permit quick reversal of the plow share, and the securing thereof in its reversed position.

Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of a hillside plow embodying my invention showing the free side of the plow, Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a hillside plow with the plow share in place, Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same, Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the bracket member detached from the plow, and, Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of one of the plunger elements.

Referring more specifically to the drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the different views, the numeral 1 designates an ordinary plow beam secured to the standard 2, this standard being of the construction common to that type of standard used in hillside plows. The low share 3 is pivotally attached to the stan ard as at 4, while the rear of said share has connecting rods 5 loosely secured to the rear of the standard. This plow share adjacent the point thereof is provided on each side with outwardly extending flanged portions 6 which are adapted to fit against the plow standard on the recessed sides thereof at the point 7. It will be noticed that adjacent this point 7 the standard is cut away and is beveled toward the lower front end.

The great ditficulty heretofore in using hillside plows has been that the soil accumulates on the standard adjacent to the point 7, and thus prevents the snug fit of the flange portion of the share against the standard, and it will be seen that unless the share can come into a close fit with the standard at this point, it will be impossible to connect the catch 8 with the connecting rods 5 at the rear of the plow, thus rendering the plow useless until the soil has been removed from the standard. As has been pointed out, the usual manner of removing this accumulation of soil has been by manual means.

The cleaner attachment comprises a bracket member 9 which is of substantially U-shape construction and which is secured about the rear of the plow standard. The inclosed end 10 of said bracket is adapted to be secured to the rear end of the plow beam 1, while the front or free ends 28 of the bracket are inclined downwardly and are fastened to the standard by any suitable means such as are shown at 12. The extreme free ends of this bracket member are turned outwardly forming flanges 13 which are provided with openings 14:. Secured to the rear or inclosed end of the bracket 9 is the plate 15 which has openings 16 substantially in alinement with the openings 14 in the outturned ends 13 of the bracket. This bracket 9 is preferably made of metal, and it will be seen that it is positioned so that it is substantially parallel to the plow handles 22. Secured to the top edges of the said bracket are the outwardly extending flanges 11, which are disposed at substantially right angles to the free ends of the bracket 9, thereby forming a guard for the plunger mechanism. A pair of plunger rods 17 is arranged to pass freely through the openings in the said plate and bracket. At the lower ends of said plunger rods are secured knife blades 18, while adjacent said knife blades the plunger rods are flattened as at 19, said flattened portions being bent as at 20 so that the knife blade of said plunger will lie closely against the plow standard, while the flattened portion of said rod also acts as a stop against rearward movement of the plunger rods. Mounted on said plunger rod and located between the plate 15 and the flanged end portion of the bracket 9 are the coil springs 21, one end of said spring being free and adapted to normally engage the flanged end 13 of the bracket, while the other end of said spring is secured adgacent to the upper end of said plunger r0 From the above description, it will be seen that when soil or debris has accumulated or gathered on the free side of the standard, and it is desired to swing the plow share to that side, the plunger rod located on the free side of the plow is forced downwardly against the pressure of the spring 21, whereby the knife blade portion will clear the standard of the soil or other foreign matter, thus permitting the share to be reversed and easily secured in operative p0sition.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2- a 1. In a hillside plow, the combination with a plow standard, of a pair of cleaners, one of said cleaners slidably secured to each side of said standard, each of said cleaners and provided with bearings, of a pair of' cleaners, each comprislng a plunger rod adapted to be slidably held in the bearings of the transverse plate and the flanged ends of the bracket, a blade secured to said plunger rod and constructed to fit closely to the side of the standard, and a coil spring mounted on the plunger rod and adapted to normally restrain the plunger rod from downward movement.
