FOLDING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 24:, 1910.
Application filed October 24, 1908. Serial No. 459,406. a
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. KLINGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Folding Device, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in folding devices, and more particularly to that type adapted to fold paper sheets which are intermittently fed to the device. It may be attached to, or become a part of a machine.
My invention has for its primary object to provide a novel construction whereby the sheets may be folded rapidly, and in such a labor saving device to embody simplicity in construction and certainty in operation, also a construction which will prove durable and efiicient.
In carrying out the above novel idea my invention embodies certain novel details of construction as will be hereinafter more definitely pointed out and claimed.
I attain these objects by the mechanism hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is an end elevation of the device with the hidden portion of the fingers shown by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the device on line a b, Fig. 1, looking in the direction that is indicated by the arrows. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the guide on line 0 d, Fig. 1, looking in the clirection that is indicated by the arrows.
Similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in the different views.
In the said drawing the reference numeral 1 denotes a shaft supported by suitable bearings not shown, and upon which is secured a member 2 which is caused to rotate with the shaft 1 by means of the key 3. Mounted freely upon the shaft 1 is a cam 4 which is held stationary while the shaft 1 rotates within same. Fingers 5 are provided at one end with pins 6 which fit freely through the member 2 and are provided at their outer ends with collars 7 which retain them in position. The central portion of the fingers 5 are provided with pins 8 adapted to carry rollers 9 which engage the cam groove 10. The outer portion of the fingers form thin blades which pass through the slot 11 provided in the guide 12.
From the above description the operation 7 of my improved construction will be understood to be as follows The shaft 1 is ro tated in the direction that is indicated by the arrow, Fig. 1, which rotates the member 2. The cam 41 is held stationary while the shaft 1 revolves freely within same. As the member 2 revolves, the fingers 5 are rotated about the shaft 1 by means of the pins 6. The outer'portion of the fingers 5 are caused to rotate in an irregular course relative to the axis of the shaft, due to the pins 8 and the rollers 9 engaging the irregular groove 10 in the face of the cam 4:. As the fingers 5 pass through the slot 11 in the guide 12 they take the course that is indicated by the dotted line 6. The sheet 13 to be folded is placed across the slot 11 as shown, and the finger 5 folds the sheet as it carries it through the slot 11 to the lower part of the guide 12. The sheet 14 is shown in its folded position.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,is-
1. In a folding device, the combination of a slotted guide adapted to receive a sheet to be folded, the said sheet extending across the slot, a rotatable disk, a folding finger pivoted upon the rotatable disk and adapted to pass through the slot of the guide so as to fold the sheet as it carries it through the slot, and cam means cooperating with the folding finger for causing it to travel in an irregular path whereby it is moving laterally as it passes through the slot but is moving longitudinally when it is withdrawn from the guide.
2. In a folding device, the combination of a slotted guide adapted to receive a sheet to be folded, the said sheet extending across the slot, a rotatable member, a folding finger pivoted upon the rotatable member and adapted to pass through the slot of the guide so as to fold the sheet as it carries it through the slot, a member projecting from the folding finger, and a stationary cam cooperating with the said member projecting from the folding finger to cause the folding finger to travel in an irregular path whereby it is moving laterally as it passes through the slot but is moving longitudinally when it is withdrawn from the guide.
3. In a folding device, means for rotating fingers about an axis, and in a desired relation with a guide, comprising a revolving shaft and member, fingers having an end fulcrumed to said member, a stationary cam provided with a groove to engage with rollmy hand in the presence of two subscribing ers supported by the central portion of said witnesses. fingers, and the outer portion of the fingers adapted to pass through an opening pro 5 vided in said guide adapted to support the Vitnesses:
