Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 11, 1908.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT EDWARD FooTE, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of 5 Regensburgerstrasse, Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stereoscopes, of which the following is a specification.
Systems of illumination by electricity for stereoscopes and similar instruments are already known and described, but all these instruments have the distinct disadvantage of being unwieldy and cumbersome. They must be worked by both hands and it is impossible to handle the apparatus conveniently, for instance to pass the instrument for class instruction quickly and quietly in schools from hand to hand by the scholars. These disadvantages will be obviated by the present invention.
The subject-matter of the present invention is a collapsible hand-stereoscope, the pictures of which can be illuminated by electric lamps for miniature illumination the source of current for the lamp being placed in a portion of the hand-stereoscope.
The whole arrangement of the new stereoscope is so handily constructed, that the new apparatus can be held in one hand and the source of current for electric illumination operated by the thumb of the same hand, so that the other hand remains completely free for the manipulation of the picture, that is to say for inserting the pictures and taking them out.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l, is a side view and Fig. 2, is a plan of the new stereoscope apparatus.
The apparatus is collapsible and handily constructed. For this purpose the slide bar a can be pivoted by a hinge b to the base platec and can be secured by bolts h or the like. The handle 70 is attached to the base plate 0 by a bayonet joint 0?. The base plate 0 carries the stereoscope e. The stereoscope picture carrier f is movably and removably mounted upon the slide bar a. At a suitable point in front of the picture is placed an electric lamp 9 for miniature illumination. If necessary, several lamps or lamps of different colors may be employed, and if desired they may be constructed as reflector lamps. This lamp is fed from a source of current 2', which may be placed either in the handle is or in another convenient place of the new stereoscope.
The pictures Z are inserted in the holder m, and the picture carrier f is adjusted to the right distance from the stereoscope. A push button a is provided, for switchlng on the lamp. In the example of construction shown in the drawings the contact is made, as soon as the handle is is attached to the base plate. After the picture carrier 7 and the handle 70 have been taken OE and the bolt h loosened, the slide a can be folded down on the base plate 0, and the whole handy apparatus can be packed into a small box, tak- I ing up little space.
I claim:
1. A stereoscope having a handle, and contacts on the handle, a source of electricity in the said handle, a switch carried by the handle, a push button projecting from the handle and adapted to operate the switch, conductors of electricity in the stereoscope, an electric lamp connected to said conductors, and contacts adapted to be engaged by the contacts on the handle.
2. A stereoscope having a frame and handle, conductors carried by the frame, an electric lamp in circuit with the conductors, terminal contacts to which the conductors are connected, a handle having contacts, a source of electricity in the handle and means for detachably connecting the handle to the frame whereby the contacts are in engagement.
3. A stereoscope having a frame and handle, conductors carried by the frame, an
electric lamp in circuit with the conductors,
terminal contacts to which the conductors are connected, a handle havingcontacts, a source of electricity in the handle, a switch in the handle adapted to establish a circuit through the conductors, a push button extending to the surface of the handle for operating the switch and means for detachably connecting the handle to the frame whereby the contacts are in engagement.
