Description

l new sont @nicht Gemine.
THOMAS MAHER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 95,919, dated October 19, 1869.
To all whom it may concern l Be it known that I, THoMAs MAHER, of Cleveland,`in the countyr of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Core-Boxes for Making Cores for Gar and similar Wheels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and Acomplete description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a perspective View.
Figure 2 is a vertical section.
Like letters ref'er to like parts.
The nature of this improvement relates to a corebox f'orhmaking cores for car and similar wheels, by which a'perfect core can be made with simplicity and by ordinary skill.
.By the old method of making cores, which is by filling a core-mould with the core-material, and then by forming the upper side of core by a sweep, it has been very diicult to produce a' true core, which,
. when used, vwould very frequently make an imperfect being thinner,
casting, one side of the wheel often makes a weak place, and rendering break.
The object of this improvement is to overcome the difiicultics and liabilities above mentioned.
In the drawings- A represents the lower half' of a core-box, having a flange, a, and is provided with a suitable number of' holes, b, for forming the supports on which the core is to rest when in the mould.
them liable to In the centre is provided a projection, B, which makes the central opening in the core. 0 represents a cover or upper half of the core-box, and is provided with a ange, d, there being a rabbet in the flange a, to receive the shoulder on the flange d, which insures its fitting closely in place.
There is also a hole, e, in the centre, somewhat larger than the projection B.'
A small sweep, D, is provided, which has a pin, j; fitting iu a hole in the projection B, and in which it turns.
The operation of' this improved box is as follows:
The bottom of the box A is first filled with the core-material, and packed or rammed down; and then the cover O is placed on, and secured by clamps, and more material is put in through the hole e, and
"rammed in compactly, filling the interior space. 'lhe sweep D is put iu place, and, by giving it a few revolutions, the space is cleaned, and the core isi'nished, ready for use.
By this means a perfect core is made, and will insure an even thickness in casting car-wheels.
What I claim as my improvement, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The core-box A, cover O, and sweep D, constructed and arranged substantially as described.
THOS. MAHER.
