Letters Patent No. 95,905, dated October 19, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-WHEELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Lettere Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it nay concern.-
Be it known that we, A. J. JACK and D. E.BRAND, of Des Moines, in the county of Polk, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved Water- \Vheel; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use .the same, reference being had to lthe accompanying drawings, forming 'part of this specification.
This inv tion relates to improvements iu waterwheels; and
It consists in the construction and arrangement of parts as hereinafter 'speciiied Figure 1 represents a sectional elevation of our improved wheel, taken on the line x x.
Figure 2 represents a top view, with a part of the upper rim removed.
Aedgewise 'between the plate A and rim B on these pivots. From the said pivots to the inner ends they have plane surfaces, but from the pivots to the other ends they are curved inward upon a regular curvature.
' The latter parts are about half the length of the former, which are connected to radial arms E, jointed at the inner ends to bell-cranks F, pivoted at their angles to a. notched disk, G, permanently attached to the shaft H, and connected, at their inner ends, by
rods I, to a sleeve, K, on the shaft above the wheel,
capable of sliding up and down, and provided with a lever or other suitable means for sliding it.
The movement of this lever one Way or the other will move the buckets correspondingly on their pivots, to open or close them, or to vary the amount of the openings.
. When the sleeve is moved downward, the inner ends of the buckets are thrown outward and the outer ends inward, so that when the lapping ends of the buckets meet, they touch at two points, and form w double joints, shutting olf the water, which is admittedJ at the top by any suitable arrangement of penstock.
We have found, by practical application, that the curvature of the outer ends of the buckets, such as we have here represented, produces better results than .any other form of buckets known to ns.
Having thus described our invention,
Vhat we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The buckets D, each pivoted at the beginning of the curved outer termination, thence to the inner end bein g plane, as shown and described. I
2. The buckets D, having the form shown, the rods E, and be1l-cranks F, pivoted at their angles to the notched disk 'G, fixed on the shaftvH, all arranged as specified. A A. J. JACK. 1).'E. BRAND.
