LOOP-SETTING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, VILLIAM A. MCAL- Lrs'rnn, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Loop-Setting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in machines for spacing, setting and clenching loops of leather, cloth, or other material.
Primarily my invention has for its object to provide a machine of this character of a simple and effective construction which can be manufactured at a minimum cost, and in which the parts will readily and effectively serve their intended purpose.
In carrying out my invention I provide a base or support in which a clench plate is held to coperate with a removable side and guide plate mounted on the base, and a second side or guide plate removably mounted on a swinging jaw that is adjustably connected to the base so as to be swung into position over the clench plate to form a channel to receive the metal loops and hold them while they are forced through the work into engagement with the clench plate.
My invention also includes means for supporting such loops while they are being forced into position into the work and clenched, and an impacting device to cooperate with such loops and their supporting means whereby when force 1s applied the loops will be forced with their tangs projected through the work into engagement with the clench bar and clenched.
More specifically the invention embodies also those novel details of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first fully described, then be specifically pointed out in the appended claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1, is a perspective view of my apparatus, the swinging jaw being in its elevated position. Fig. 2, is a similar view showing the application of my invention. Fig. 3, is a substantially central longitudinal section of the apparatus with the parts in the position shown in Fig. 2, except that the impacting plate 14. is in engagement with the loop supporting bar 12. Fig. Li, is an enlarged section showing the loops in the position they assume after being clenched. Fig. 5, isla detail perspective view of one of the removable guide plates. Fig. 6, is a detail perspective view of one of the loops which my apparatus is designed to set. Fig. 7, is a detail perspective view of a portion of a harness strap with the loops in place.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in which like letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 represents the base of the apparatus which may be of any approved form and which is provided with the rearward extension 1b on which is rigidly mounted the bearing block 2 having a forwardly eX- tended slide to receive the carriage 3 of the movable jaw 5 which is pivoted to said carriage at 3a, as indicated. The carriage 3 is adjustably mounted on the slide extension of the bearing 2, through the medium of a screw 4: that is swiveled in the bearing 2 and threaded at 4b-3b into the block 3.
The jaw 5 is provided with a bar 6 having downwardly projected fingers 6 at each end to embrace the ends of the forward extension of the base 1 and prevent lateral movement of the spacing guide plate 7 with relation to a similar plate 8.
The plate 7 is removably secured to the jaw 5 by screws 7X, see Fig. 1, and such plate 7 is provided with suitably spaced grooves 75L having flared entrant ends 7b to form guides for the loops 13, hereinafter again referred to, and the plate 7 coperates with a similar guide plate 8 removably secured to the block 1a of the base 1 by the members 8 which project into the end grooves 1c of the block 1a. The guide plate 8 (see Fig. 5) is provided with grooves 8a to cooperate with those 7'EL of the plate 7 and the grooves 8a have fiared entrant ends 8b similar to those 7 b of the plate 7.
In practice, the number of grooves 7L-8a in the plates 7 and 8 vary with the requirements of the work. I have shown in the drawing such plates as having seven grooves so that seven loops may be set at one time, although it is obvious that a greater or lesser number of grooves 71--8a may be provided, as conditions may require.
Beneath the side guide plates 7-8, when the parts are in operative position, is a clench plate 9 that has a portion of its upper surface 9a concaved, while the remaining straight portions 9b serve as rests for the plates 7 and 8.
A support 10 having a fiange 10l is rigidly secured in any desired manner to the base l and serves to support the blinkers 11 of a harness (see full lines in. Fig. 3, and dotted lines in Fig. 1).
The strap 11a to which the blinker 11 is attached, in practice, is rested between the plates 7 and 8 on the anvil 9, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings.
12 designates a loop supporting rod designed to snugly fit within the loops 13 leaving their tangs 13a free. The loops 13 are designed to project into the grooves 7a8at in t- he plates 7 and 8 and be spaced and guided thereby.
An impacting block 14 is provided which has cutaway portions 14a correspondingin position to the grooves 7a-8a'to permit the driving impact to be received by the bar 12 instead of the upper part of the loops 13.
In use, the loops 13 are threaded onto the bar 12 and the bar 12 is placed in position between the plates 7 and 8 after the jaw 5 has been swung into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the loops 13 being moved along the rod 12 until they coincide with the respective grooves TEL-8a, see Fig. 2. After which, the operator manipulates the screw 4 through the winged nut 4a to force the plate 7 toward the plate 8 until the work 11at is gripped by said plates, after which the impacting bar 14 is placed in position, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings, and an impacting force applied to such bar 14. This force may be either the force of a manually operated hammer 15 or a mechanically actuated hammer of any desired type, so that uniform pressure may be imparted to the impacting bar 14 to force the rod 12 in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3, and cause it to bear on the lower sections of the loops 13 and force the tangs 13a of such loops through the work 11a so that the points 13b of the tangs 13il will be deliected or clenched by the concaved surface 9a of the clenching plate 9, as shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings.
It is obvious that the plates 7 and 8 may be of any length and height as may be found desirable and may be provided with any number of grooves 7 "--Sa, as conditions may warrant. Furthermore the impacting plate 14 may be of any design or configuration so long as the grooves 14a are provided to leave projections to engage the rod 12 between the loops 13, as a means for driving said rod downwardly to force the loops through the material to which they are to be secured.
Having forced the loops 13 simultaneously into position, as shown in Fig. 4, the operator may swing the jaw 5 upwardly and remove the work, and after withdrawing the bar 12 the loops will be as shown in Fig. 7, and the work ready for use.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the complete construction,
operation and advantages of my invention will be readily understood by those skilled in the art to which the invent-ion appertains.
What I claim is:
1. A machine for setting metal loops having tangs, a base or support, a clench plate removably held therein, guide plates removably supported over said clench plate and having a plurality of loop receiving grooves, a loop holding rod operating between said plates and movable through the loops, said clench plate and said guide plates adapted to form a channel to receive the work to which the loops are to be secured, and means operating between said guide plates and en-r gaging said loop holding rod for forcing the tangs of such loops through the work into engagement with the clench plate.
2. A machine for setting metal loops having tangs, a base or support, a clench plate held therein, guide plates removably supported over said clench plate and having a plurality of loop receiving grooves, a loop holding rod operating between said plates and movable through the loop, said clench plate and said guide plates adapted to form a channel to receive the work to which the loops are to be secured, and means operating between said guide plates and engaging said loop holding rod for forcing the tangs of such loops through the work into engagement with the clench plate.
3. A machine for setting metal loops having tangs, a base or support, a clench plate removably held therein, guide plates supported over said clench plate and having a plurality of loop receiving grooves, a loop holding rod operating between said plates and movable through the loop, said clench plate and said guide plates adapted to form 105 a channel to receive the work to which the loops are to be secured, and means operating between said guide plates and engaging said loop holding rod for forcing the tangs of such loops through the work into engage- 110 ment with the clench plate.
4. A machine for setting metal loops having tangs, a base or support, a clench plate held therein, guide plates supported over said clench plate and having a plurality of 115 loop receiving grooves, a loop holding rod operating between said plates and movable through the loops, said clench plate and said guide plates adapted to form a channel to receive the work to which the loops are to 120 be secured, and means operating between said guide plates and engaging said loop holding rod for forcing the tangs of such loops through the work into engagement with the clench plate.
5. A machine for setting metal loops having tangs; a base or support having a groove, a clench plate mounted therein, a side guide plate having a plurality of guiding grooves removably secured to said base 130 plate, a jaw hinged to said base plate, means preventing lateral movement of said jaw With relation to said base plate, a side guide plate having grooves removably secured to said javv to coperate With said first mentioned side guide plate, and means coperating With the aforementioned parts for setting a plurality of loops into an article.
6. A machine for setting metal loops having tangs; a base plate or support having a groove, a clench plate mounted therein, a side guide plate having a plurality of guiding grooves removably secured to said base plate, a jaw adjustably hinged to said base plate, means preventing lateral movement of said jaw With relation to said base plate, a side guide plate having grooves removably secured to said jan7 to coperate With said first mentioned side guide plate and means coperating With the aforementioned parts for setting a plurality of loops into an article.
7. In a machine for setting metal loops having tangs; a base or support having a groove, a clench plate having a concaved groove on one surface mounted in said base groove, said base having a projecting portion, a side guide plate connected With said projecting portion and resting on said clench plate, a hinged jaw connected With said base, a second side guide plate secured to said hinged jaw to be swung into operative relation with said first mentioned guide plate and into engagement With said clench plate, said guide plates having provisions for spacing and guiding loo s, said guide plates being spaced apart to orm an article and loop receiving channel, and means for forcing loops toward said clench plate to project their tangs through an article to Which it is desired to secure such loops and to cause the ends of said tangs to engage such clench plate and be upset thereby.
