To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ROBERT P. SMITH, of WVinchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Humidifiers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.

This invention has reference to improvements in humidifiers and relates particularly to improvements in humidifier casings.

The object of the invention is to so con struct a humidifier casing that a part or section thereof may be swung outward and upward in a peculiar manner.

The invention consists in the peculiar construction of the humidifier casing comprising segmental sections and in the peculiar manner of pivoting one of said sections.

Fig. 2, represents a similar view of portions of the casing sections showing the position of the swinging section when opened. Fig. 3 represents a view of portions of the machine, partially in section, showing the construction of the upper hinge. Fig. i represents a similar view of the lower hinge.

Similar numbers of reference designate corresponding parts throughout.

As shown in the drawings in its preferred form 5 represents the hanger having the depending arms 66 to the lower ends of which is secured the drip pan 7 which carries the spacing members 88.

Secured to the depending arms 66 of the hanger 5 is the main casing section 9, segmental in shape, and having at its lower end the segmental flaring rim 10 secured to the drip pan 7 by bolts 11-11. One edge portion of the segmental opening of this casing section 9 has the button 12 and the corresponding edge portion of said section has, at its upper end, the socket 13, while the lower portion of rim 10 has the socket 14.

The swinging casing section 15, is preferably segmental in shape, to fit between the edges of section 9, and has at its upper portion the member 16 furnished with one end journaled in the socket 18, while at its lower end, this section 15 has the flaring rim 17, adapted when closed to fit between the ends of rim 10, which is furnished with the member 18 having an end j ournaled in the socket 14. On said section 15 is mounted the latch 19 adapted to engage the button 12 when said section 15 is closed.

Under some conditions of use the currents of air, induced in the humidifier casing by the moistening spray, carry to the moistened interior of the machine lint, fluff and other foreign matter which, at times, it is desirable to remove and in such event the casing member 15 may be released from its holding device and swung outward on its pivots, which in efiect are ball and socket joints, so that the free edge of the rim 17 may swing upward, as well as outward, until it is swung past the socket 14: after which section 15 swings toward the main casing section 9 which forms a stop for the hinged section 15, the overbalancing of said hinged section thus preventing the accidental closing of said hinged section. When the swinging section is thus opened access may be had both to the interior of casing section 9 and to the rim 10, as well as to the parts contained within said section 9 and its rim. After which the section 15 may be closed. In the open position the inclination of the rim 1'? tends to direct the flow of any moisture accumulated thereon toward its lower pivoted portion whence said moisture may flow into the drip pan 7.

Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent.

1. A humidifier comprising a casing formed of segmental sections of which one has a flaring rim, a ball and socket joint connecting the upper part of said section and an adjacent fixed part of the machine, and a ball and socket joint connecting the lower end portion of said flaring rim with a corresponding fixed part of the machine.
