CHARLES H. RATH, OF PHILAIDELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SPRAYING ATTACHMENT.
Specicationof Letters Patent.
Patented May 17, 1910.
Application filed March 25, 1909. Serial No. 485,772.
To all whom 'it may coi/wem:
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. BATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spraying Attachments; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, -such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in spraying devices of that class which de end upon their action by intermittently orcing a jet of air immediately over the up er end of the liquid supply tube and has or its object to so construct the device that any waste fluid not carried 0E with the spray will be collected and returned to the liquid containing can or receptacle.
With these and other objects in view, thev invention consists of certain novel features,
of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
'In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of a spraying device embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. e
In the embodiment illustrated, the numerall indicates the liquid containing can or receptacle, and 2 the air pump for foroing jets of air over the upper or outlet end of the supply tube 3` As shown, the air pump comprises a cylinder`4 closed-at its outer end by a cap 5. A piston 6 consisting of a rubber washer 7 clamped between two clamping plates 8 is removably secured upon the inner end of the piston rod 9, vthe outer end of which extends through-the cap 5 of the cylinder andis provided with the usual operating handle 10. The inner end of the cylinder is also closed in by the wall 11 which is provided vwith a central opening or aperture 12 immediately opposite and extending slightly above the up er end of the supply tube 3 through whic aperture the jets of air are forced out of the cylinder by means of the piston over the upper end of said tube.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, theinner end of the cylinder is provided with a hollow. downwardly tapering extension 13 which surrounds the supply pipe 3 and forms a drip cup to collect or catch any of the waste fluid that is not carried off in the form of a spray, said cup being provided with a depending tube 14 which leads into the upper end `of the receptacle 1 and returns'any of the liquid that is caught by the drip cup. The inner end of the cylinder 1 is also provided with a tubular screw threaded extension 15 which screws upon the upper threaded end of the can or liquid containing receptaclev 1.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that anyof the liquid not carried off in the form of a spray -and which would otherwise go to waste, will be caught by the drip cup 13 and returned to the can 1 by the return pi e 14.
From the oregoing description, taken in connection with theA accompanying drawings, the construction ,and operationof the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
. Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a spraying device of the class described, a pump cylinder, a cup-like member extending-from one end of the cylinder, a supply tube and a return tube passing through the bottom of the cup-like member, and ai threaded extension surrounding the tubes and adapted for attachment to a liquid containing receptacle'.
l In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
- CHARLES H. BATH.
