To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK H. HAMPTON, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Pullman. county of Cook, State of Illinois. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Cushion Edges. of which the following is a specification.

The main object of this invention is to provide an improved cushion construction and to provide improved means for securing the edge pad in position. This object is accomplished by the device shown in the accompanying drawings. in which:

Figure 1 is a sectional detail of a padded spring cushion embodying this invention; Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same, viewed from the plane indicated bythe line '2-2 in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail showing the method of sewing a sheet of canvas to form the casing of the edge pad.

In the construction shown in the drawings. the frame structure of the cushion comprises a base 1 having mounted thereon a plurality of helicoidal springs '2. The top of the frame is formed by the upper convolutions of the springs and frame members which connect them. These comprise a border wire 3. which is secured to the top convolution of each of the adjacent springs by means of metal clips 4. and a border plate 5 which extends along the edge of the cushion and has a series of perforations therein adjacent to the border wire 3. The plate 5 is secured to each of the adjacent springs by means of a clip 6.

The edge pad. which confines the padding 7 of the cushion and serves to maintain the shape of the edges thereof, consists of a yielding filling 8 of felt or other suitable material tightly packed within a casing 9 preferablymade of flexible fabric such as canvas. In forming the casing, the canvas is first folded upon itself, and the parts at each side of the fold are sewed together along a line 10 parallel to the fold to form a substantial tubular casing with two flaps of considerable width extending away from the seam 10. One flap 11 is laid across the frame and supports the padding of the cushion. and the other flap 12 forms the lining of the edge of the cushion.

In assembling the cushion after the frame structure is completed, the edge pad is laid along the outer upper edge of the frame and is sewed to the border wire 3 and border plate 5 by means of a flexible lacing 13, preferably of wire. This lacing is passed through both flaps 11 and 12 of the edge pad and through the perforations in the border plat-e 5.-and is drawn tightly around both the border wire 3 and the edge pad. The edge pad is so placed that the seam 10 will lie close to the surface of the plate 5. flap 11 is then laid across the top of the frame. and the flap 12 is pulled over and around the edge pad and secured to the bottom of the frame. The filling 7 is then placed in position. and the outer lining of the cushion is placed over the filling and sewed to the flap 12 at 14.

\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A cushion, comprising a spring frame, a border member extending along the edge thereof, an edge pad extending along said border member, and a flexible metallic lacing wound around said edge pad and engaging said border member for securing said pad in position thereon.

2. A cushion. comprising a spring frame. a border plate extending along the edge of said frame and having a series of perf0ra tions adjacent to its outer edge. and a lacing wound around said edge pad and pas ing through the perforations in said border plate for securing said edge pad in position.

3. A cushion, comprising a plurality of coiled springs. a border wire extending around the edge of said cushion and secured to the adjacent springs. a border plate extending along the edge of said cushion adjacent to said border wire and having a series of perforations adjacent to said border wire, an edge pad extending along said border, and a lacing wound around said edge pad and border member and extending through the perforations in said plate for securing said pad in position thereon.

4.
