To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL S. BEARD, a citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaynesboro, in the county of Franklin and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in I-Iay- Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to presses for baling hay and other similar material; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts used for guiding and dropping the blocks into the press-chamber and for folding the hay behind the press-plunger.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of a portion of the press showing the novel folder and block-dropper. Fig. 2 is an end view of the'same showing a portion of the press in section on the line 00-00 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section through the folder taken on the line g g in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the parts shown in Fig. l, with the block-dropper removed.
A is a portion of the press-chamber of a hay-press of any approved construction, and B is the feed-opening at the top thereof. The press is provided with angle-shaped bars a at its upper part, and the horizontal flanges of these bars are cut away at the sides of the feed-opening B. Flat bars Z) are secured to the sides of the vertical flanges of the bars a at the sides of the feed-opening B to reinforce them at this point, and to afiord a free passage for the hay. The press-plunger, not shown, slides under the feed-opening and compresses the hay in the press-chamber when moved rearwardly in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1. A folder-roller C is provided at the rear part of the feed-opening to prevent the hay from jamming between the top of the press-chamber and the press-plunger.
D are brackets secured to the press and provided with guide-pockets d. These guidepockets are preferably circular, but they may be oval if desired. The roller C is provided with a shaft 0 which is mounted loosely in the guide-pockets 03, said pockets being about four times as large in diameter as the shaft 0, so that the roller 0 may be free to move in all directions Within the Specification of Letters Patent.

These openings are closed by the vertical flanges of the bars a and the bars I), said parts having curved notches d cut in them to conform to the shape of the pockets cl and to complete their bottom portions.
E are vertical guard-plates which project around the upper parts of the guide-pockets (Z; and c are curved flanges on the front parts of the plates E which project over the ends of the roller O and prevent the hay from catching between the ends of the roller and the guide-pockets.
F is the top of the press-chamber A, formed of a thin metallic plate and having an lip-turned flange f at its end behind the guide-pockets. The flange 7 curves gently into the plate F so that a sharp corner is not formed, and a packing-piece g and an angle-shaped bar g are secured to the said plate and its flange to strengthen them.
II are springs having their rear end portions adjustably secured in brackets it, which are bolted to the press-chamber. The front end portions of the springs H bear downwardly on the roller 0.
IVhen the press-plunger is moved so as to force the hay rearwardly into the press chamber, the roller C rolls and slides about to suit the hay, and enables the hay to be folded into the press-chamber below the roller C without catching or amming.
I are channel-shaped bars which form the ends of the block-dropper. These bars form guides for the blocks which are slidable in their channels. Retaining springs i are secured in the lower parts of the channels for preventing the blocks from sliding through the guidechannels unless forcibly pressed down in them.
J and J are cross-bars which couple the bars I together, and 7' are angle-shaped arms secured to the lower crossbar J. The arms 7' are cranked and offset to one side and are pivoted to the brackets D by pins 7', but they may be pivoted to any other similar supports.
K is a socket secured to the middle parts of the crossbars, and is is an operating handle or lever which engages with the socket K, and which may be removed therefrom when not required in use.
L is a stop secured to the top of the press to prevent 'the block-dropper from being tilted too far rearwardly. When the blockdropper is tilted rearwardly the'socket K strikes the stop L.
A block is placed between the bars I when tilted rearwardly, and the block and the block-dropper are then moved to the vertical position shown in Fig. l by means of the handle is. The mechanism of the press then forces the block downwardly in the guidebars I into the press-chamber in any aproved manner.
What I claim is:
1. The combination, with a press-chamber provided with a feed-opening, of brackets provided with guide-pockets and secured to the said chamber at the rear part of the feedopening, a folder-roller provided with a shaft having its end portions free to move about in the said pockets, and springs which press the said roller downwardly in the said feed-opening.
2. The combination, with a press-chamber provided with a feed-opening, of brackets provided with guide-pockets and secured to the said chamber at the rear part of the feedopening, said brackets being also provided with vertical guard-plates at their upper parts and having laterally projecting flanges at the front parts of the said guard-plates, a folder-roller provided with a shaft having its end portions free to move about in the said pockets, and springs which press the said roller downwardly in the said feedopening.
3. The combination, with a press-chamber provided with a feed-opening and having bars at its sides, of brackets provided with guide-pockets and secured to the said chamber at the rear part of the feed-opening, the said pockets having openings at their bottoms which are closed by the said bars, a folderroller provided with a shaft having its end portions free to move about in the said pockets, and springs which press the said roller downwardly in the said feedopening.
4. The combination, with a press-chamber, of a block-dropper comprising two channelshaped guides and two crossbars secured to the said guides, and two cranked and offset arms secured at one end to the end portions of the lower crossbar and having their other end portions pivoted to the press-chamber.
5. The combination, with a press-chamber, of a block-dropper comprising two channelshaped guides and two crossbars secured to the said guides, two cranked and offset arms secured to the end portions of the lower crossbar and pivoted to the press-chamber, a socket secured to the middle portions of the said crossbars and bracing them together, and a handle projecting from the said socket.
