T o all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB BnNsING, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Malinta, in the county of Henry and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Tile Cutting Machine; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersV skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to tile cutting machines, and particularly to machines of this class in which an endless carrier is employed to support a moving column of clay or other plastic material as it is continuously forced from the die of a mill, and to coperate with a revolving cutter to sever the column into sections of predetermined length.
An object of my invention is to provide a construction of endless carrier for use in machines of this class, which is adapted for the cutting of tile sections in double lengths r,as distinguished from single lengths, or
sections approximately a foot in length, for which latter the old construction of carriers were only adapted, and also to provide improved means for adjusting the carrier troughs to accommodate columns of clay of different diameters.
The operation, construction and arrangement of the parts of the invention are fully described in the following specification, and a preferred embodiment thereof illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a machine embodying my invention with parts of the same broken away. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation of one of the links or sections of the endless carrier thereof. Figs. 3 and t are top plan views of the same equipped with double and single trough sections respectively, and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of one of the cutter-arms.
Referring to the drawings, 1, 1 designate the two sides of the machine, which are supported by legs or standards 2, and spaced apart in any suitable manner. On the inner wall of each side is provided an endless grooved-way or track 3 in which the antifriction rollers 4L on thecontiguous sides of the section or links of the endless carrier of the machine work.
rIhe sections of the carrier are shown as comprising the two base or truck members 5, 5, which are connected together in spaced relation by a carrier-bar G, and formed on their forward and rear edges with the projecting lugs 7, 7, which pivot to the contiguous lugs of the adjoining carrier sections and carry the rollers 4t on the pivots therewith. Rising, in the present case, from the base members 5 of every other carrier section are the standards 8, which serve as guides for directing the movements of the cutter-arms as hereinafter described.
For the purpose of enabling the column A to be cut into double length sections a, the carrier is successively provided on its top with a trough section 9 substantially equal in length to the width of two carrier sections, then with two short trough sections 10, each substantially 'equal in length to the width of a carrier section, and so on around the entire carrier, thus placing two single trough sections on each side of each double trough section.
Each double trough section comprises a top trough-like portion 11 of sheet metal or other suitable material, which is preferably of a flexible nature, and a base plate or block 12 to which the trough portion 11 is riveted or otherwise suitably secured along the center line thereof, as shown. rFhis plate extends longitudinally of the carrier and has its forward portion securely bolted, or secured in any other suitable manner to the central portion of the carrier-bar 6 of one carrier section, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and has its rear end resting freely on the carrier-bar of the next section to the rear thus enabling the trough to take the inclination of the first associated carrier section in traversing curved portions of the tracks 3 and to leave the rear carrier section of the pair, as indicated at the left of Fig. 1. The trough portion 11 is curved to conform to the contour vof the tile column and has its side edges supported in proper position by pawl members 13 which coperate with notched standards 111 rising from the end portions of the carrier-bars 6 of the forward carrier section. The members 13 are shown as comprising wires or rods the ends of which have pivotal bearings in the beaded edges 15 of the tops 11, while their central portions are bent laterally in U-shape to adapt the loops thereof to rest in the desired notches in the associated standards 111. To
change the curvature of the trough it is only necessary to place the pawls 13 in engagement with higher or lower notches in the standards 14.
Each single trough section comprises aV top trough portion 16 similar to the tops 11 of the double sections, except that its length is substantially the width of a single carriersection. The top portion is secured to a base block 17, which is in turn secured in a suitable manner to the central portion of the associated carrier-bar, see Fig. 4. The side ledges of the trough top carry wire loops 18, or pawl members which may be placed in 'engagement with the desired notches of the standards 14 of the associated carrier section to support the trough sides in proper position.
Rising from opposite sides of the machine near the forward end thereof are standards 19 in which the ends of a shaft 20, carrying the cutter-wheel 21, are journaled. Projecting' radially from the rim portion of the wheel21, to which they are pivoted, are a plurality of U-shaped cutter-arms 22, adapted to carry cutter-wires 23 at their outer ends as shown in Fig. 5. The arms 22 are capable of limited oscillatory movements relative to the wheel. The arms 22 are preferably placed on the wheel 21 in suitable numberto permit single length tile-sections to be cut, in which case the cutter-wire is removed from every other arm when doublelength sections are being cut.
The operation of my improved machine is as follows As the column A feeds from the die of the mill it is directed onto the carrier and forces the same around on its track due to the frictional contact of the column with the troughs of the carrier links or sections. F or cutting double-length tile, the cutter-arms carrying cutter-wires are so arranged that the wires, guided by the guide standards 8, pass down through the column to effect a severing thereof between the single trough sections 10 of each set, thus causing the center' of each severed section to be supported by a double trough section 9 and each end to rest on the contiguous single trough section. As the carrier sections pass around the curve of the track at the forward end, the single trough section 10 at the forward end of a tile section rst lowers from under the tile, after which the forward carrier section of the double trough section tilts as it follows the curve, thus tilting the double trough section therewith and raising the rear end of the same from the rear carrier section thereof and the rear end of the tile from the rear single trough section, as shown. As the carrier continues its movements the tile continues to approach a vertical and is deposited upright upon a pallet (not shown) disposed in advance of the machine.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. In a machine of the class described, an endless carrier comprising double and single trough sections, the single sections being arranged in pairs between each pair of double sect-ions.
2. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an endless carrier comprising a pluralityof pivotally connected carrier links, and double and single trough sections carried thereby, the single sections being arranged in pairs between each pair of double sections.
8. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an endless carrier comprising a plurality of pivotally connected links, a single trough carried by each link of alternating pairs of the carrier and a double trough carried by the links intermediate said pairs.
4. In a machine of the class described, the combination of an endless carrier coniprising a plurality of pivotally connected links, a single trough carried by each link of alternating pairs of the carrier, and a double trough fixed to one and adapted to rest freely on the other of the links disposed between said pair, substantially as described.
