OHARLEY BJORKLUNID, OF BOWESMONT, TO H. M. WALDREN AND ONE-THIRD NORTH DAKOTA.
NORTH DAKOTA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO JOHN V. ANDERSON, BOTH OF DRAYTON,
BASKET ATTACHMENT FOR BARREL-TRUCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 9, 1909.
Patented May .10, 1910. Serial No. 482,376.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEY BJORKLUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bowesmont, in the county of Pembina and State of North Dakota, have invented a new and useful Basket Attachment for Barrel- Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a. basket attach-. ment for barrel trucks.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient basket attachment of great strength and durability, adapted to be readily applied to and removed from a hand barrel truck, and capable of enabling the latter to be advantageously employed in carrying and delivering parcels.
With these and other objects in View, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing Figure l is a side elevation of a basket attachment, constructed in accordance with this invention and shown applied to a truck, the frame of the latter eing partly in section. Fig. 2 is a reverse plan view of the basket attachment. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same. Fig. 41 is a detail perspective view of one corner of the basket attachment.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts drawing.
The basket attachment 1, which is designed to be applied to a barrel truck 2, comprises in its construction upper and lower rectangular frames 3 and 4t and vertical bars or posts 5, arranged at the corners of the basket and connecting the upper and lower frames 3 and 1 at the corners thereof. The upper and lower frames 3 and 4: may be constructed of either tubular or solid metal, and when constructed of tubular metal is equipped at the corners with couplings 6, which also receive the ends of the vertical in all the figures of the l e l corner bars. The vertical corner bars are preferably solid, and they may be connected at their terminals with the upper and lower frames in any other preferred manner.
The basket is equipped with a sheet metal bottom 7 of galvanized iron, or other suitable material secured at its edges to the sides and ends of the lower rectangular frame 4, preferably forming beads or partial beads 8 for embracing the bottom frame,
ut any other means may be employed for attaching the edges of the bottom to the framework of the basket. The basket is also provided with side and end walls 9, designed to be constructed of woven wire, or other suitable material, and the said basket may be equipped with a cover (not shown) of canvas, or other suitable material, buttons 10 being mounted on the side and end walls of the basket at the exterior thereof for the attachment of such cover.
The basket is supported by a pair of longitudinal rods or bars 11, preferably constructed of solid metal and suitably secured to the lower rectangular frame and extending beyond the upper and lower ends of the basket. The lower extended ends of the supporting rods form arms 12, arranged at an angle to the bottom of the basket and terminating in reduced studs 13, which fit in openings or sockets 14 of the foot 15 of the frame of the truck. The arms 12 extend downward and forward from the front of the basket, and the reduction of their terminals to form the studs 13 also provides shoulders 16, which engage the upper face of the foot. The upper terminals 17 of the supporting bars 11 are bent substantially at right angles to the bottom of the basket and are provided with terminal studs 18, engaging sockets or openings 19 of couplings 20, which connect the side bars of the frame with the legs 21. The reduction of the upthe supporting rods form shoulders 22 for engaging the frame of the truck, and when the lower arms of the supporting rods and the upper terminals of the latter are interlocked with the frame of the truck by means of the studs and openings, the basket is securely retained in place The depending front arms are of a suflicient length to support the front of the basket at a slightly higher level than the rear end of the basket when the handle bars of the truck are permitted to rest upon the supporting surface.
The basket attachment is also equipped at its rear end with a pair of hooks 23, preferably constructed of a single piece of metal and having their shanks connected by a transverse portion 2a. The shanks of the hooks are curved around the upper portion of the rear end of the lower rectangular frame, and they pierce the sheet metal bottom of the basket, and the transverse connecting portion is located at the lower face of the bottom 7 This provides a strong construction, but the hooks may be connected with the frame-work of the basket in any other preferred manner. These hooks will be found especially advantageous in carrying coal oil cans and analogous receptacles, and they suspend the cans exteriorly of the basket at points between the handle bars of the truck.
No claim is made in the present application for the particular construction of the barrel truck, which forms the subject-matter of a separate application executed of even date herewith.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A basket attachment for hand trucks having a foot piece, said basket attachment including a receptacle provided at its front with arms detachably engaging the foot piece of the truck and supporting the front of the receptacle in an elevated position when the truck is in its normal position, said receptacle being also provided at its rear end with means for connecting it with the frame of the truck.
2. The combination of a truck including a foot piece and provided thereat and at the rear portion of its frame with openings, and a basket attachment provided at the front with arms arranged to engage the openings of the foot piece and supporting the front of the basket at an elevation, said basket being also provided at the back with means for engaging the rear openings of the frame.
3. The combination with a truck having a frame provided with front and rear openings, of a basket attachment including a receptacle, and longitudinal supporting rods secured to the bottom of the receptacle and having terminal portions detachably engaging the said openings.
4;. A basket attachment for trucks including a receptacle and spaced longitudinal supporting rods extending beneath and connected with the receptacle and provided with depending front supporting arms and having extended rear terminals, the said arms and terminals being arranged to engage a truck.
5. A basket attachment for trucks including upper and lower rectangular frames, corner bars connecting the frames, a sheet metal bottom secured to the lower rectangular frame, side and end walls connected with the frames, and spaced longitudinal support-ing bars connected with the lower frame and having extended terminals ar ranged to engage a truck.
6. A basket attachment including a receptacle having a sheet metal bottom and provided with a frame to which the marginal edges of the bottom are connected, supporting bars extending beneath and connected with the receptacle, and spaced supporting hooks located between the supporting bars and having shanks extending over the said frame and piercing the sheet metal bottom and provided below the same with an integral connecting portion.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
GHAR-LEY BJORKLUND.
