MAST-CAP.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN D. JEN snN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chesterfield, in the county of Bannoclr and State of Idaho, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mast-Caps, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in mast caps and its object is to provide a simple and practical mounting at the top of a derrick mast for a pole or beam whereby the latter may swing vertically and also horizontally.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved mast cap; Figs. 2 and 3 are horizontal and vertical sections taken respectively on the planes indicated by the lines 2-2 and 3 3 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 4; is a detail section showing the manner in which the pole or beam is fastened to its ivotal support.
Referring more particu arly to the drawings, 1 denotes my improved mast cap which is adapted to be secured to the top of a derrick mast indicated at M in Fig. 1 by means of strap bolts or other fastenings 2. The cap 1 consists of a base plate 3 of rectangular shape apertured to receive the bolts 2 and formed on its four sides with upright arms 4 which converge upon each other and are united above the top of the base plate to form a bearing 5. A step bearing or socket 6 is formed upon the center of the base plate 3 immediately beneath the bearing 5, and the two bearings are adapted to receive an upright cylindrical pivot 7. The lower end of said pivot rotrates in the step bearing 6, and adjacent its upper portion is formed an integ'ral annular flange 8 to engage the bottom portion of the bearing 5 to prevent the upward movement of the pivot 7. For the purpose of permitting the pivot to be placed in the cap, the latter is made in two similar half sections by dividing it along the center of two of the opposing arms or uprights 4. These two half sections are united by bolts 9 or similar transverse fastenings as clearly shown in the drawings.

The upper end of the pivot 7 is enlarged and bifurcated as shown at 10 to receive a pivot lug 11 on a pole or beam-supporting member 12. Said pivot lug is arranged on a transverse horizontal pivot 13 in the bifurcated end 10 of the upright pivot '7 whereby the pole P may swing vertically on the horizontal pivot 13 and may also swing horizontally on the vertical pivot 7. The member 12 is in the form of a dished or channeled plate to receive the pole P, and the latter is retained therein by a fastening strap 14: passed around the pole and having its ends secured by bolts or similar fastenings 15 in recesses formed in the oppo site sides of said channeled plate or member 12.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that the construction, operation and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and arrangement of parts may be made within the spirit and scope of the invention.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A device of the character described, comprising a cap member having a step bearing and an elevated bearing, an upright pivot rotatable in said bearings and having an annular flange to engage the bottom portion of the elevated bearing and retain the lower end of said pivot in the step bearing, a horizontal pivot at the top of said upright pivot, and a pole-supporting member mounted on said horizontal pivot.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a cap member having a step bearing and an elevated bearing, an upright pivot rotatable in said bearings and having an annular flange to engage the bottom portion of the elevated bearing and retain the lower end of said pivot in the step bearing, said cap member being constructed of two half sections, fastenings uniting' said half sections, and a horizontal pivot at the upper end of the upright pivot, and a pole-supporting member mounted on said horizontal pivot.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a cap member having a step bearing and an elevated bearing, an upright pivot rotatable in said bearings and having an annular flange to engage the bottom portion of the elevated hearing and retain the lower end of said pivot in the step bearing, the upper end of said upright pvot being bifurcated, aiy channel pole-engaging member formed With a lug arranged in the bifureated upper end of the upright pivot, a horizontal pivot retaining said lug in said bifu'reated end of the upright pvot, and a. strap to surround a pole and having its ends secured to said channel pole-engag- 10 lng member.
