Patented May 10, 1910.
Application filed February 1, 1910. Serial No. 541,299.
T o all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that we, MANUEL J. BAKER and VALENTIA-n M. Pinnen, citizens of the United States, residing at Buialo, in the county ot' Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improve ments in Clothes-Founders; and We do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ot' the invention, Such as will enable others` skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte land use the lsame, reference being had to the`aecompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this lspecification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in clothes pounders for laundryl purposes and comprises a simple and ei licient device ol this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements ot' parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
rl`he invention is illustrated in the acoorn- "panying drawings, in which Figure l is a longitudinal sectional View centrally through the pounder, and Fig. 2 is a bottom plan View.
. leferenee now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the funnel shaped member haringgr a tubular shank portion l5 which is adapted to 'receive the handle C. Sa id member is provided with a lseries of circumferential apertures l) about midway the height. of Said member and imnualiately below l1' transverse oval-- lshaped partition 'l\`. Said partition F has a central aperture lt" through which a screw G passes and which is adapted to engage the .inner end `ot` the handle C. Said partition is also provided with a series of small aperturesl K lornuul"therein about the inner end of the handle. f
Q designates :flexible diaph 'ag'xn made preterabli1 ot rubber-wr any other suitable material and which is centrally apertured l'or the reception oif a screw, and i designates' a plate which is apertured to receive the screw and which adapted vto hear against said'-diaphragm lo .support the same. Said plate, is adapted to hold the diaphragm against the outer oval-shaped end oi said transverse partition. ltl will be noted that the diameter of xsaid diaphragm greater than that oi' the plate which holds the Same said partition and l the portion of the diaphragm which projects beyond the' marginal edge of the plate T is l adapted to close the opening intermediate the marginal edge of the plate and the in` ner surface of the tunnel shaped member.
The operation olf the device will be readily understood and as follows z--`iVhen the funnel-shaped member is pushed downward, the exiole edge of the dia hragm will be forced against the inner surtace of the funnelshaped member, closing the space intermediate the marginal edge of the plate and the. Surface of the funnel-shaped member and also covering the series ot' apertures formed in the member below' said partition, thus causing air and 'Washing solution un` derneath the partition to be forced through the fabrics being cleansed and, upon a reverse movement of the member or tilting the same, a suction will be produced which will cause a partial vacuum to be formed below the partition and which wili allow air and water to he drawn through the series ole apertures and about the marginal edge of the tiexible diaphragm in the space "oelovY the partition.
ot the plunger, it will be noted that a circulation ot' water and air may be forced through the articles being cleansed, thus having a tendency to thoroughly clean the same.
lWhat we claim to be new is:
l. .t suction pounder for laundry purhaving a series of apertures in the wall thereof, an oval-shaped apertured partition mounted within said member, `a. handle to 'the latter, a tlexible diaphragm iixed within the member and positioned a slight distance ,below the outer nnirgfinal odge ot' said parr tition, `lined plate engaging said l phragm and havin@ a Space intervening loel tween the marginal edge, ot the latter land l `the inner surface ot the turn'zet-ehaped mem l ber, which spare is nosed bj. the .liaphragm, l as: eet. ilorlh. i
i il. A, suction pounder ior laundry purl i l l i i l i 1 l l l l poses comprising' a tumiel-shaped member having a series ot apertures in the wall l' ther-eet an oval-hu red a )artnr-ed oartition a D i mounted within said member, a handle pass ing through the shank portion of the tunnel `shaped member and fastened to the inner concavedfaee of the oval-shaped partition, a screw passing through said partition and lengaging the end of the handle, a tiexible By a rocking or an up and down movementposes comprisingl a. funnel-shaped member' diaphragm mounted upon the shank portion In testimony whereof we hereunto affix 1o our signatures 111 the presence of two wltnesses.
of said screw, a plate also mounted upon said screw and bearing against the outerI face of said diaphragm, the diameter of said plate bein less than the diameter of the I 1 diaphragm an the outer peripheral portion of the latter being adapted to bear yid'- ingly against the lnner, lnclined wall of the' funnel shaped member. 1
