To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jol-IN BARRY, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Antelope, in the county of Clay and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Neck-Yokes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in detachable neck yokes, and it consists in the 4novel combination, arrangement and construction of parts as will be hereafter more particularly described and claimed.
ln the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of my invent-ion showing the shaft members and parts comprising the same formovably attaching said shafts to the hounds of an ordinary wagon or other vehicle. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the detachable pole or neck yoke employed in connection with the terminal ends of the shaft members. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my complete invention with the parts united showing the pole or neck yoke in its proper position with respect to the shaft members. Fig. 4 is a vertical cross section taken on the line :c-m of Fig. 2, also showingthe pole or neck yoke in a binding position upon the upper edges of the shafts. Fig'. 5 is an enlarged cross section of the neck yoke through one of the bands and ring carried thereby and Fig. 6 is a plan View of the combined staple and band before the same is bent around in a binding position upon the pole.
The object of my invention is to produce a very durable, practical and efficient draft equalizer, whereby three horses may be worked side by side, thus equalizing and distributing the draft or work upon each of the animals, and dispensing with the usual lead horse, and further clearing the horses of the track and uneven surfaces cut in the road by wagons or other vehicles and permitting them to travel upon a smooth and solid road bed.
My invention therefore consists of a detachable hold back in the form of a pole or neck yoke of suitable length, which may be easily and readily secured in its proper position to the reduced terminal ends of the shaft members, and further in the particular arrangement of the several attaching rings carried by the pole or yoke, and means for attaching the same whereby the said rings are niovably secured to the pole. or yoke by a combined staple and band, the latter portion encircling and binding the pole and having securing eyes for the rings, the said band and metal forming the eye being integral or of a single piece of metal, the locking and securing for the several parts being hereinafter more fully described as will appear from the detailed description following.
Referring to the drawings l represents the V -shaped frame which is movably attached to the ordinary hounds of a wagon or other vehicle in the well known manner, and secured to the forward ends of the V- shaped frame by bolts or other suitable fastening devices are transverse beams 2, and also secured to said frame in the rear of the beams 2 and parallel thereto is the beam 3, all of which forms a rigid support and frame for attaching the rear ends of the shaft members 4 to the frame l.
In order to more thoroughly secure the shafts 4 in a rigid position in respect to one another a semi-circular or arch shaped bar 5 is employed, the ends of which are attached to said shaft members and having its intermediate portion secured to the outer end of the V-shaped frame l, by suitable bolts or other fastening device as clearly shown in Fig. l of the drawings. Secured to the rear transverse beam 3 midway between its ends is one end of the metallic clip 6, by means of a bolt 7, the free ends of said clip having an opening through which an ordinary coupling bolt is adapted to freely pass, and also through an opening formed in the forward transverse beam 2 lo 'cated on the upper surface of the frame 1. The clip 6 referred to is designed to removably hold the ordinary triple tree in its proper position in respect to the shafts 4, and to said double tree are movably secured the usual swingle trees, all of which is of the well known or of any improved construction.
The forward free terminal ends of the shaft members 4 are reduced as clearly shown in Fig. l, the under surfaces of which are inclined as shown at 8, which inclined surfaces lead to and terminate in a vertical abutting surface 9, against which the rings carried by the pole or neck yoke are adapted to be brought in contact when the pole is in its proper position upon the shaft members and the ends of the traces of the harness carried by the horses are properly attached to the swingle trees in the well known manner.
The detachable pole or neck yoke 10 is provided with two depending intermediate rings 11, the distance between said rings being approximately the same distance as the space between the terminal ends of the shaft members 4, whereby the latter are freely received by said rings when the said pole or yoke member is placed in its proper position upon the shafts in a manner previously referred to. The pole or neck yoke .10 is also provided with three additional rings 12, which are secured to said pole at right angles to the rings 11 previously referred to, and in such a manner as to normally assume a transverse position to the rings 1l, the rings 12 being employed to properly attach the throat straps leading from the collar of the harness when the horses are properly hitched to the equalizer.
All of the rings referred to are movably secured to the pole or neck yoke 10 in a similar manner-and therefore I shall only proceed to describe one of said rings together with the combined staple and securing band which I employ in carrying out my invention.
Referring particularly to Figs. 4, 5 and 6 of the drawings, 13 represents a single piece of metal folded upon itself and providinii an eye 11i for movably receiving the ring. Une end of the staple thus formed being considerably longer than the other as clearly shown in Fig. 6, which long end is adapted to be bent to encircle the pole in a binding position. In practice an opening' is formed through the pole or neck yoke 10 for freely receiving the staple thus formed to the eye 14: of the same, in which operation the end of the short arm of the staple will project a sufficient distance beyond the pole to be formed in the shape of a hook 15, after which the long arm 16 is bent in the direction as shown by the arrow in Fig. 6 to cause the same to encircle the said pole in a binding position, the end of the long arm being bent around the hooked projecting end of the short arm 17 whereby the parts are thoroughly clamped and drawn into position and interlocked in a very practical manner.
By referring particularly to Fig. 4 of the drawings, it will be seen that when the pole 10 is in its proper position upon the shaft members and draft brought to bear upon said pole, the latter will be forced into frictional contact with the upper edges of the shaft members whereby the parts are held in a locked position with respect to one another and preventing accidental displacement after the horses are properly harnessed and hitched on either side and between the shaft members.
From the foregoing` description it will be apparent that the operation of my invention is very simple and clear, and further I do not wish to limit myself to the precise construction of the parts as herein shown and described as the same may be varied slightly without departing from the nature of my invention.
That is claimed is:
In combination with a pole or neck yoke having an opening formed therethrough, a combined staple and band formed from a single piece of metal and folded upon itself and having an eye portion, one of said arms being longer than the other and bent around in a binding position upon the pole and having its free end interlocking with the hooked shaped end of the short arm of the staple and a ring movably secured by the eye thus formed.
