Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 3, 1910, Application filed June 22, 1901. Serial miasoesz.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I CHARLES H. RIETH,
a citizen of the United States, and resident ing is a specification containing a full, clear,
and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, formlng a part hereof.
My invention relates to combination game blocks, and comprises four sets of suits of blocks, on the facesof which appear symbols letters, and numerals, and with which blocks can be played all known games of cards and domlnoes, and many new combinations thereof.
My invention consists in certain features of novelty hereinafter shown, described, and claimed.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective view of one of the ame blocks; Fig. 2 is a transverse section t. lien on the line 22 of Fig. 1 Fig. 3 is a view of the faces of the blocks comprising the diamond suit; Fig. 4 is a view of the faces of the blocks comprising the heart suit; Fig. 5 is a view of the faces of the blocks comprising the club suit Fig. 6 is a view of the faces of the bloc s comprising the spade suit.
The game blocks 1 as shown consist of fifty-six pieces, constructed of any suitable material, rectangular in form, and similar to the blocks used in the game of dominoes.
Each block 1 is provided on its face with a raised border 1, and a raised dividing line 2, thus formin two depressions of equal area and depth 1n which are inserted or applied sections 3, on which are provided the letters, numerals, and symbols designating the-various suits or characters of the game set.
Appearing on the sections, to the left of the dividing line on fourteen of the blocks is a diamond shaped figure 3", which is colored or printed in red to correspond with the diamond suit of a pack of cards.
Appearing on the centers of the sections 3, to the right of the dividing lines of thirteen of this set of blocks are the letters and figures,A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K; and appearing on the right hand section 3 of the remaining block of this suit is a diamond shaped figure; and thus this particular set of blocks represents respectively the ace, deuce, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, n1ne,-ten, jack, queen, and king of the diamond suit of a pack of cards, together with a double diamond, which may be used as a oker in playing card games, or for a combmatlon or key piece when playin ames which are combinations of cards an dominoes. A second set of fourteen blocks have their faces formed in a manner similar to the diamond set of cards just described, said second set representing the heart suit of a pack of playing cards; and the faces of the third and fourth sets of blocks are formed to correspond with the club and spade suits, and which latter two sets are printed or appear in black.
The faces of the blocks are recessed to receive the sections 3 in order that the numerals, letters, and symbols appearin on said sections will not become worn 0 or discolored while the blocks are in use, as the raised edges of the blocks prevent the edges of the sections 3 from coming in contact with the table.
It will be readily understood that with a set of the blocks formed as herein described, all games ordinarily played with games or dominoes may be played with said blocks,
and new games, or combinations of cards and domino ames, may also be played.
The four locks havin the double diamonds, hearts, clubs, an utilized as jokers, thereby providing new possibilities in card games, and constitute the keys or connectin links for adapting these blocks to the p aying of all domino games, viz., that instead of laying and matching dots and blanks, as is done with ordinary dominoes, with my improved-set a heart is matched to a heart, a spade to a spade, a diamond to a diamond, and a club to a club, using the double, symbols for the crosses. Furthermore, all letters and figures on the o posite ends of my improved game ieces will match one another, regardless 0 suit or color.
Euchre, whist, pedro, and all other card games may be p a ed with my improved game pieces recise y as with cards, except that the shu ing or mixing is done as with dominoes. All domino games are played with my improved game pieces with the adaptation as above noted.
It will be seen from the foregoing descri tion that it is only by the employment of tl ie spades may be on one s1 four blocks having the double emblems on their faces, to-wit, double hearts, double diamonds double clubs, and double" spades, is it possible to adapt a game set to the playing of domino ames, and the creation of new games whic may be a combination of both cards and dominoes.
The blocks with which the games are played are conveniently handled, and are easlly and quickly shufiied by being placed face downward upon the table, and moved about.
I claim The herein described combination game blocks, comprising a set of fifty-six blocks divided into four equal sets of fourteen each, namely, a suit of dlamonds, a suit of hearts, a suit of clubs, and a suit of s ades, the faces of all the blocks being of uni orm color and the facesvof all the blocks being divided into two spaces and thirteen blocks of each suit being rovided respectively in the spaces (it of the dividing line with diamond, heart, club and spade symbols printed in a color in contrast to the faces. of the blocks, and the op osite spaces on the faces of the four suits o thirteen blocks provided with the letters and numbers A, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 9, 10, J, Q, K, printed in the same color ters appearing on the thirteen blocks of each suit and the said double symbolsappcaring on the fourteenth block of each suit being separated by a dividing line.
