Description

I. KITSEE; TBLBGRAPHIG RELAY. APPLICATION FILED JAN. 27, 1908.

ANUREV/ u. GRAHAM co. PHUTO-UTHOGRf-PHERS. wAsmNsm N. D. c,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISIDOR KITSI JE, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TELEGRAPHIC RELAY.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IsIDoR Krrsin, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telegraphic Relays, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in telegraphic relay. Its object is to produce means to lessen the sparking or sticking between the stationary and movable contacts of a relaying device.
In experimenting with sensitive relays, I have found that the sticking or sparking is greatly prevented when the source of current itself, without any electro-magnetic devices or other resistance, is short circuited; but in short circuiting the source of current, such for instance as batteries, not every type is suitable therefor and the type now usually employed-secondary batterieshas to be entirely discarded on account of their low re sistance and I have found that the so-called gravity or blue-stone .cells are well adapted for the purpose in question.
In the drawing, which is a partial diagrammatic and partial perspective view of a relay embodying my invention, 1 represents the relay proper; this relay is here shown as a coil suspended and movable, placed in the region of a magnetic field; 2 the suspension wire; 3 the suspended mov able conductor; 4 the stationary conductor. In this drawing, the suspended conductor is shown as to be normally in contact with the stationary conductor; 5 are the means to actuate the suspended conductor with the aid of the movable part of the relay proper; 6 are the means to suspend the metallic wire thereon.
12 is the source of current, here shown as consisting of two cells. This source of current is provided with the wires 7 and 8 which are short circuited and provided with the wires 9 and 11 connected to the electromagnetic device 10. This electro-magnetic device may represent a sounder or device adapted to operate other electro-magnets.
The operation of this arrangement is as Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 27, 1908.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Serial No. 412,919.
follows :Normally, the conductors 3 and 4 are in contact-with each other and the battery 12 is therefore short circuited. No current will flow through the circuit containing the electro-magnet, but when through the incoming impulse the movable part of the relay arrangement is moved out of contact with the stationary part, the short circuit is broken and the electro-magnetic device is operated.
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In cable telegraphy, a receiving organism comprising a movable coil in the region of a stationary magnetic field, two relaying contacts therefor, one relaying contact movable and suspended on a conducting thread, the second relaying contact stationary, a localized source of current, one pole connected to the stationary contact and the second pole connected to the conducting thread; a second circuit for said source of current and a translating device in said second circuit.
2. In combination with a sensitive relaying device, a battery normally short circuited through the relaying means and provided with a second circuit containing neces sary translating device, the short circuit adapted to be broken through the movement of the movable part of the relaying arrangement due to the incoming impulse.
3. In cable telegraphy, a relay connected to the cable, a movable conductor suspended with the aid of a conducting thread and means therefor to operate the same with the aid of the movable part of the relay proper, a stationary contact normally connecting with the movable conductor, a source of current normally short circuited through the stationary and movable conductor; a second circuit for said source of current and necessary translating device in said second circuit.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISIDOR KITSEE.
