LAMP-CHIMNEY HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 16, 1909.
Serial No. 518,040.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GILBERT E. ALPHIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Olive, in the county of Wayne and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lamp- Chimney Holders; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in chimney holders.
One object of the invention is to provide an improved holder of this character by means of which a chimney may be securely held in place on the burner of the lamp.
Another object is to rovide a lamp chimney holder which wil l be simple, stron durable and inexpensive in construction, e cient in operation and well adapted to the purpose to which it is designed.
WVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrange ment of parts as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanyin drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view 0% a lamp chimney and burner showing the application of the invention thereto. Fig. 2, is a plan view of the holder removed from the chimney.
In the embodiment of the invention, I provide loop shaped elements 1, which are preferably formed of malleable wire, and in the opposite sides of which, adjacent to their looped ends, are formed eyes 2. With the eyes of each section is slidably engaged the side portion of the opposing section so that the looped ends of the latter overlap and slidably en age with each other and form an adjustabIe chimney engaging ring 3.
The outer ends of the loop-shaped wire elements are brought together and secured by twisting or by other suitable fastening means and to said connected ends is secured one end of coil springs 4, on the opposite ends of which are formed hooks 5, which are adapted to be engaged with the outer edge of the burner as clearly shown in Fig. 1, of the drawings.
In applying the device to a chimney, the inner ends of the loop-shaped sections or elements are pushed apart until a ring is formed of sufficient size to be passed over the flared upper end of the chimney after which the looped ends of the elements 1, are drawn together until said ends engage the chimney at its smallest diameter. After thus engaging the holder with the chimney, the side portions of the loop-shaped elements 1, are drawn down around the sides of the bulged portions of the chimney and the hooks 5, on the lower ends of the springs a, are engaged with the edge of the burner,"
thereby securely holding the chimney in place on the latter.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is: i
1. A chimney holder comprising two loopshaped flexible elements, eyes formed on the opposite sides of the looped ends of each of said elements to receive the side portions of the other element, whereby the looped ends of the latter are slidably connected together to form an adjustable chimney engaging ring, coiled springs secured to the outer ends of said loop-shaped elements, and means to secure the outer ends of the springs to the lamp burner.
2. A chimney holder comprising two wire strips bent intermediately of their ends to form loop-shaped elements, each element having the free ends thereof twisted together and provided near the bent central portion thereof with oppositely disposed eyes, the side members of one element being slidably engaged with the eyes of the other element, and coiled springs secured at one end to the twisted ends of the respective elements and adapted to be connected at their other ends to a lamp burner.
