PROTECTING MEANS FOR MASTS, POLES, OR THE LIKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTTo F RIEDRIOH VVEINLIG, general director, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Burg Lede, near Beuel-on-the-Rhine, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Protecting Means for Masts, Poles, or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object a cover or cap for protecting the tops of wooden or concrete masts or poles or fence posts or the like against rain and snow or atmospheric action.
A protecting'cover or cap according to this invention is illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 illustrates the cap secured in position to the top of a mast or pole, in vertical section, and Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof.
In order to protect the heads of masts or poles of any kind, and in particular those used for electric transmission as for instance for telegraph or telephone service, against premature rotting or decay, or poles or masts of cement against bursting or splitting under the influence of frost or corrosion, the head of the mast or pole is covered by a conically shaped cover or cap. This cap is preferably pressed out or otherwise made of iron or other sheet metal such, for instance, as copper or zinc. It may, when necessary or desired, be galvanized, tarred, varnished or enameled, or be provided with other rust-proof coating. The lower edge of the cap is turned up or bent at a and inclined so as to form a trough, and at its lowermost point 6 is provided with a discharge lip, whereby it is possible to arrange for the free discharge of water at a suitable point.
In order to avoid injury to the cap by nails, rivets, or screws, it is fixed in position Specification of Letters Patent.

by means of two or more strips 0 of metal secured laterally to the mast or pole by tacks or screws or by cement, said strips having their upper parts hook-shaped or bent over for the purpose of the engaging with and holding the cap.
The drawing in addition shows, in dotted lines, the arrangement of a lightning conductor (Z, the metal strip 0 being used for fixing purposes by a wire or otherwise, while the cap is provided with a notch or groove which is preferably of semi-circular cross section to receive part of the conductor.
Claims.
1. A protecting cap or cover for masts, poles or the like, consisting of a conical metallic cover or cap, its lower edge being Lip-turned to form a trough, a lateral discharge lip from said trough providing an outlet for the purpose of conveniently discharging rain or snow-water, and hook shaped strips or members fitting over the upturned edge to hold the cap in position and secured to the mast or the like below the said cap.
2. A protecting cap or cover for masts, poles or the like, consisting of a conical metallic cover or cap, its lower edge being upturned to form a trough, a lateral discharge lip from said trough providing an outlet for the purpose of conveniently discharging rain or snow-water, and hook shaped strips or members fitting over the up-turned edge to hold the cap in position and secured to the mast or the like below the said cap, said cap being also provided with a groove.
