Description
G. W. SHEPHERD.
RIDING SADDLE.
APPLICATION IILED SEPT. 29, 190B.
Patented May 3, 1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARKE W. lElI-IEPI-IERD, OF SPRING HILL, WEST VIRGINIA.
RIDING-SADDLE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARKE W. SHEPHERD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spring Hill, in the county of Kanawha and State of est Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Riding-Saddles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in attachments for riding saddles and my object is to provide a device which will form a guard for the feet and lower limbs of a person from mud or water splashed by the animal while being ridden.
A further object is to provide means for attaching the guard to parts of the saddle.
Other objects and advantages will be here inafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view showing my improved attachment applied to use. spective view of the attachment and parts of the saddle to which the same are secured, and, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan view of the guard and parts attached thereto.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates a saddle, which may be constructed in the usual or any preferred manner and has at each side thereof, stirrups 2, which are secured to the saddle by means of the usual or any preferred form of stirrup straps 3.
The prime object of my invention is to protect the feet and lower limbs of the person when riding in the saddle from mud, snow, etc., splashed or thrown by the animal in traveling over the roads and to this end I secure to the lower bar of the stirrup 2, a plate 4, which plate is preferably formed of metal and provided along one end with a depending flange 5, to which is secured a guard 6, preferably formed of a heavy strip of leather or similar material, the upper end of the guard being secured to the straps 8, as by means of rivets 77, the guard extending over the outer face of the strap to a point adjacent the connection of the strap with the stirrup and at this point the guard is Fig. 2 1s a per-- Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 29, 1908.
Patented May 3, 1910.
Serial No. 455,297.
provided with an opening 8, through which the strap is introduced to engage the stirrup 2.
The forward edge of the guard is extended forwardly of the line of the stirrup strap to form a protection for the knee of the person, while the rear edge of the guard is engaged with the end flange 5 of the plate 4, thereby extending said rear edge at right angles to the plane of the body of the guard, said angular extension 9 preventing mud, etc., from coming in contact with the lower limbs of the person, while the plate 4 protects the foot of the person.
This improved guard is designed more particularly to be used by persons required to travel over all kinds and conditions of roads and is particularly designed for the use of doctors, as they are frequently compelled to travel over roads where it is impossible to use a vehicle and by providing my improved guard and arranging the plate 4 and angular extension 9, the lower limbs of the person will be thoroughly protected from mud, etc., occasioned by the animal in traveling over the road. It will likewise be seen that the guard will also prevent the lower limbs coming in contact with the body of the animal and will serve to protect them from cold piercing winds and if preferred, any suitable form of heating device may be attached to the lower face of the plate 4 for keeping the feet warm.
What I claim is:
A stirrup attachment, comprising a guard with an opening adjacent its bottom for the insertion of a strap and having its rearward end bent at right angles to the body portion and the forward end bent outwardly, and a plate having its inner side edge and rear end bent to form a continuous depending flange, the upper face of said plate being adapted to have a stirrup rest thereon, and said shield secured adjacent its bottom to the depending flange of said plate, whereby the shield is held and the rear angular portion formed thereon.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CLARKE W. SHEPHERD.
Witnesses:
JOSEPH Form, D. W. PATTERSON.
