UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. FRAME, OF FAIRFIELD, IOWA.
NEcK-YOKE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. FRAME, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Jefferson and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Neck- Yokes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention rel-ates to neck yoke centers, and the principal object of the same is to provide a simple and effective device which may be readily attached to, or detached from, a vehicle pole, and which, when in position on the pole, will readily respond to all movements thereof, and further, will be so detachably locked on the pole and held in rigid engagement therewith as to be practically noiseless.
In carrying out the objects of the invention generally stated above it is contemplated employing a frame which may have a detachable engagement with a neck yoke, said frame having a pivotal and a yielding engagement with a pole guide and holder, said frame also being provided with a forward resilient pole support, and with a rear arm adapted to engagement with a holdback of a pole and also serving as a means for holding the neck yoke center in engagement with a pole.
It will be understood, of course, that in carrying out the invention as generally stated above the essential features thereof are susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure l is a perspective view of the improved neck yoke center. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation thereof. Fig; 3 is a central vertical sectional View, showing the device attached to a wagon pole.
Referring to-said drawings it will be observed that the improved' neck yoke center is composed. primarily of a main frame having a base 1 through which a central opening 2 is formed, said central opening 2 com municatingwith a bottom recess3, and its upper end merging into an upper recess 4 whichat its rear merges into an upstanding annular flange 5.. .The front portion of said recess 4 merges into a lip 6, the arrangement 'of lip and, rear flange bein such that the front upper portion of the ase 1 haste-lip Surrounding it, and the rear of said upper Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 12, 1909.
Patented May 3, 1910. Serial No. 501,793.
portion of the base has an upstanding flange surrounding it which serves as an abutment for a holdback attachment to a vehicle pole, as will presently appear. A pair of arms 7 project from the base 1, said arms being upwardly and outwardly curved, and the members of said pair of arms being oppositely disposed, and form the end sup ports for a semi-cylindrical neck yoke rest 8, the forward portion of which may be cutaway to reduce weight, and also to facilitate access to the neck yoke, said cut-away portion being designated by the numeral 9, and the ends thereof providing supports through which fastening bolts or screw l0 pass which secure the said rest to a yoke.
As will be observed by reference to Fig. 3 of the accompanying drawings, the recess 4 merges into the central opening on an easy outward curve and forms a bearing surface for an enlarged rounded under surface of the head 11 of a pintle 12 which projects through said central opening 2, the lower end portion of said pintle being threaded as indicated at 13. The head 11 carries an upstanding vertically arranged pole supporting eye 14:, the base portion of which is widened as indicated at 15 and whose front face is on an incline as indicated at 16, and terminates in a rounded face shoulder 17 adapted to contact'with a lip 18 depending from the front portion of the cut-away portion 9 of the yoke rest 8 to limit the forward rocking movements of said eye 14;. The interior ofthe eye is preferably lined with wear-resisting and cushioning material 19 said lining retained in position by the rivets 19* or other fasteners. The base of said eye 14, at its rear, carries a laterally projecting lug 20 which is adapted to bind with the rear flange 5 of the frame so as to limit the rotary movements of the eye 14 relative to the base 1 of said frame. A spring metal plate 21 is loosel mounted upon the threaded portion 13 o the pintle 12, the forward portion of said plate being u turned to form an arm 22 the upper end 0 which is forked, as indicated at 23, to engage with the outer end portion of the vehicle pole 24,- conventionally re resented in Fig. 3. The rear end of said p atecarries an upstanding arm 25 the end 'ortion of which is bent at'an angle to provi e a spring lip or finger 26 which engages behind a holdback plate 27 which abuts the rear flange 5 of the base 1 of the frame, as is clearly indicated in Fig. 3. A lock nut 28 for the threaded end-13 of the pintle 12 holds said O It will be seen from the foregoing that through the described manner of mounting the pole supporting eye within the base of the frame, said eye is capable of a universal movement therein so as to adapt itself to the various movements of the vehicle pole, and through the described spring pressure exerted against the plate 21, said plate is at all times held in binding engagement with the lock nut28. Another prominent feature of the invention is inthe employment of said plate 21 which, by means of its end arms, forms a simple and efficient holdback engaging arm which prevents forward movement of the neck yoke center on the pole, and the forked arm 22 by its engagement with said pole, serves to prevent the plate 21 turning in a manner that would release the arm 25 from engagement with the holdback.
In applying the improved neck yoke center to a pole, the same is reversed from the position shown in Fig. 3, and slipped over the end of the pole until the rear flange is in alinement with the holdback attachment, whereupon the said device is returned to its upright position, with its holdback attachment engaging arm behind the hold back.-
What I claim as my invention is 1. A device of the characterdescribed comprising a main frame adapted for en gagement with a neck yoke, a pole supporting eye mounted therein for universal movement, and a spring plate carried by said eye and having end arms for engaging a pole and also engaging with a holdback attachment.
tachment with a neck yoke, a pole supporting eye having a pivotal and yieldin movement therein, and a plate carried by said eye'for engaging a pole and also holding said frame to said pole.
