JOHN Gr. ALLEN, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
WINDOW-TENT.
To @ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN Gr. ALLEN, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in VVindow-Tents; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a window tent adapted to be attached within the interior of a room to the window casing and to be arranged within the window opening so as to inclose it entirely and to communicate with the outside air by the opening of the sashes thereof, as may be desired, to facili-k tate circulation, and having no opening into the room in which it is located except through the opening or openings through which it is designed that the user shall in sert the head when the same is in use, the window tent itself being designed to be closed on all sides except that portion which corresponds with the window opening.
The object of my invention is to provide a window tent that is simple in construction; that is closed on all sides except that part adjacent the window opening; to provide a tent that is readily attachable and detachable to the window opening or the casing thereof; that is foldable upon itself when in position on the window so as to clear the lower sash so that it may be out of the way while the bed is being made or the room ventilated, also to facilitate the reducing of the complete structure to a convenient form when the same is wholly detached to enable it to be carried around readily also to provide means for readily detaching the canvas or other covering from the frame parts and the forming of the openings for the insertion of the users head in such a form as to facilitate a complete closure of the opening after the head has been inserted to prevent circulation of air between the tent and the interior of the room.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention and in which similar reference characters indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure l is the front end of a window tent embodying my improvements, placed in position over the opening in a window and showing the means Specification of Letters Patent.

of attaching the same to the window casing; Fig. 2 a vertical sectional view on the line 9.*2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 a detail view showing a section of the window casing and the manner of attaching the window tent frame to the window opening and also showing the manner of attaching the canvas to the window tent frame; Fig. 4c a sectional view through a portion of the window casing and the tent frame showing in detail the manner of connecting the tent frame to the window casing, there also being shown in connection with the sectional parts the manner of securing the canvas or other covering to the tent frame; and Fig. 5 a detail view showing the shape of the opening through which the head of the user is designed to be inserted.
l is the ordinary window casing and 2 a cot or bed which is placed in front of the window in position for use in connection with the window tent.
The frame of the window tent comprises the upper and lower frames 3 and 4C which are connected together by the iiexible strip 5, the said frames being of suitable size to lit when extended within the window casing l and the casing l and frames 3 and 4; are provided with interlocking catches 6 which consist of a hook secured to the tent frame and an eye secured to the window casing, a number of the same being used as shown in Fig. l to securely hold the frame within the opening, thereby securely holding the frames within the window and rendering the same readily removable. The frames 3 and et are provided with a screening 7 to keep out soot, insects, etc., from the interior of the window tent the space between the frames 3 and 4 being closed by means of the strip of flexible material which serves both for that purpose and also for the purpose of attaching the frames 3 and l together, the said strips extending the entire width of the frames. Hinged to the upper section 3 as at 8 and arranged to swing to a horizontal position o-r at right angles to the frames 3 and Athere is provided a frame comprising the pair of arms as 9 connected with the cross frame pieces as l0 adapted to extend nearly or quite across the width of the window tent and to this frame there is adapted to be hinged as at 1l a corresponding frame formed of the arms as l2 and the cross pieces 13, the outer end of said frame being adapted to engage and support the tent covering when the tent is let down into position over the bed. For connecting the arms 9 and 12 there is provided the brace hook 14 pivotally secured to the frame part 10 and adapted to detachably engage a pin on arm 12 for the purpose of securing the outer frame part in an extended position in connection with the inner frame part and rendering the same foldable one upon the other to facilitate the folding of the tent into a compact body when the complete tent is folded up. A flexible covering 15 of canvas, rubber or any suitable material is adapted to be secured to the frames 3 and 4 and to extend over and be supported by the hinged frames made up of the frame parts 9 and 10, and 12 and 13, thereby forming a compartment which is closed on all sides except the side next the window, so that the interior of the tent only is in communication with the outer air.
The edge of the covering around the opening next to the window is provided with a series of elongated eyelets 16 and is adapted to be secured around the edges of the frames 3 and 4 by means of the Wire ribbon 17 provided with loops adapted to embrace the said eyelets and screw eyes as 1S adapted to be screwed into the tent frame, as shown particularly in Figs. 3 and 4, in which figures the eyes of the screw eyes are shown to be passed through the eyelets in the tent covering and to be turned so as to engage the loops of the wire ribbon in such a manner as to securely fasten said wire ribbon against the edge of the canvas, and thereby securely hold the same upon the edge of the frames 3 and 4. Likewise in Figs. 3 and 4, the hooks 6 provided to secure the frames 3 and 4 to the window casing 1 are shown attached to the wire ribbon and engage screw eyes on the frame.
In practice, any means may be employed to secure the casings 3 and 4 to the window opening and likewise any form of marginal facing may be employed to hold the edges of the covering to the frames 3 and 4, and likewise any suitable means may be employed for detachably fastening the canvas to said frames 3 and 4, as it is obvious that various means may be employed for that purpose without departing from the spirit of my invention.
19 refers to the shape of the opening I desire to use in connection with my window tent, and have provided an elongated opening such as may readily permit the user to insert his head through, but the same is especially designed to facilitate the closing of said opening eifectually against the passage of air to and from the interior of the tent and the room.
In using the tent, the person so using, and lying upon the back may close the opening completely by drawing the elongated portion of the opening up toward the crown of the head until the enlarged portion encircles the neck. A person lying upon the side may accomplish the same result by drawing the elongated portion of the slot over the ear on the side of the head upon which such person is lying sufficiently to draw the edge of the enlarged portion of the opening close around the neck.
In practice, I may also dispense with the use of the extension frame made up of the frame parts 12 and 13 thereby also dispensing with the hook 14 without departing from the spirit of my invention, this form being particularly adapted for use in connection with a tent that is used in connection with a cot or single bed.
In practice, when it is desired to fold the tent up, the hook 14 is disengaged from the outer frame part and the inner frame part is folded up against the upper frame 3 then the lower frame 4 may be folded up against frame 3, the tent body being folded in between the two frame parts 3 and 4. Hooks may be provided for hooking the two frames 3 and 4 together, thereby clearing the lower portion of the window and disposing of the window tent in a simple and compact body entirely out of the way. Likewise the parts of the tent may be so folded for the convenience of carrying same when detached from the window casing.
It will be seen by a reference to the drawing that the window tent is so attached to the window casing as to cover the entire opening and also in such a manner as to in no way interfere with the movements of the sash. The lower sash may be raised and the upper sash lowered to provide for complete circulation of air or in fact for any adjustment of the window sash that may be desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A device of the character described, comprising a frame part adapted to be secured to a window casing without interfering with the movements of the sash there-in, an awning like top, side walls dependent from said top and adapted to inclose a bed adjacent said window, both detachably secured to said frame part, an adjustable frame part hinged to the frame part connected with the window casing provided with a hinged extension at its outer end adapted to support the tent covering in a tent like form.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with a window casing, and a tent adapted to cover the same, of a frame supported within the window casing, means surrounding the window tent and bearing against the edges of the open part thereof,
for holding said edges against the frame, and means for fastening said means and the edges of the tent against the frame.
In a device of the class described, the combination with a Window casing and a tent adapted to cover the Window, of a frame supported in the casing, a slotted strip surrounding the Window tent and bearing against the edges of the open part thereof for holding the said edges against the frame and means for fastening said slotted strip and the edges of the tent against the frame.
4.. In a device of the class described, the combination with a Window casing, and a Window tent adapted to cover the Window, of a frame supported in the casing, a slotted strip surrounding the tent and bearing against the edges of the open part thereof for holding said edges against the frame, and means for fastening said slotted strip and the edges of the tent against the frame in a detachable manner.
5. The combination Witha Window, of a tent wholly inside of and covering the entire Window, a frame supported Within said Window opening, means for securing said tent to the frame, comprising a bearing strip surrounding the opening adapted to bear upon the frame and over the edges of the tent adjacent thereto and to be secured to the said frame portion.
6. The combination with a window, of a tent Wholly inside of and covering the entire Window, a frame supported Within said Window opening, means for detachably securing said tent to the frame, comprising a bearing strip surrounding the opening adapted to bear upon the frame and over against the edges thereof for holding said edges against the frame, and means for fastening said slotted strip in a detachable manner to said frame.
In testimony whereof I have atliXed my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN Gr. ALLEN.
