EMIL STEEB, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
COMBINED STORAGE-CASE AND EXHIBITION DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 26, ,1910.
Application filed April 12, 1904. Serial No. 202,796.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EMIL STEEB, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Indianapolis, county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Storage- Cases and Exhibition Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cases especially for storage and protection of voting machines and mechanical devices attached, the objects of which are ready means for elevating said machine partly from the said case for exhibition or use whereby one person is enabled to elevate the voting machine from the said case preparatory for use on election day.
Another object is that the storage case provides stable support for the machine during exhibition or election day occasions, instead of the special temporary trestles or legs provided usually, other objects being that the device is cheap, efficient and easily operated so that one instead of the number of persons usually needed to lift upon temporary supports can operate my device placing the voting machine in readiness for use and such mechanical construction that will be secured at any point of elevation and the following specification and accompanying drawings explain and illustrate my invention more fully.
In the drawings Figure 1, is an end elevation of the storage case in vertical section showing the incased machine and the operating mechanism; Fig. 2 is a front view of my device with the hinged cover sectional member laid open and partly broken away and the voting machine ready to be elevated to position preparatory for exhibition or official use.
In the dilferent views similar letters of reference indicate similar parts; a representing the storage case with a folding cover, a a a look at a and wheels or casters at a b is the voting machine incased in the case a; c is a worm gear at each end of case, mounted on short transverse shafts 0 supported in suitable bearings 0 (Z is a worm mounted at each end of said case on a longitudinal shaft d suitably journaled in bearings d in said case and adapted to engage with said worm gears c, and is operated by a suitable detachable crank 03 e is a sprocket wheel journaled upon and intermediate the ends of each of the shafts c preferably near a middle point of the said voting machine, or if desired two sprockets may be on each shaft 0 one at or near each bearing 0 and suitable chains f on the sprockets and depending therefrom and fastened, as at f at lower end to the said machine whereby when the sprockets are rotated by the crank turning the shafts through the worm gears the voting machine is readily and easily raised or lowered by one person.
In the application and construction of my device there may be changes made from exact construction I have shown and described and I desire it understood that I contemplate all changes and application as fall fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention and What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In combination with a voting machine, of a rectangular inclosing casing having a folding cover, alining bearings secured to the inner face of the opposite ends of the casing, a rod journaled in said bearings and extending longitudinally of said casing adjacent to the top and'in proximity to one side thereof, bearings secured to the inner face and at each side of each end of the casing, rods journaled in said last mentioned bearings and extending transversely of said casing and above the longitudinal rod, worm gears secured to the ends of said longitudi nal rod, a gear wheel carried by each of said transverse rods at corresponding ends thereof and meshing with the worm gears upon said longitudinal rod, a sprocket wheel arranged centrally of each of said transverse rods, a vertically movable voting machine inclosed within said casing and adapted to be elevated through the top of the casing when the cover is open, and chains secured at one end to said sprocket wheels and connected at their lower ends to said machine at opposite alining points and in proximity to the bottom thereof and adapted to elevate said machine when said' sprocket wheels are rotated and said sprocket wheels, chains and rods being positioned in spacings between said machine and casing.
EMIL STEEB.
