WalHAMANN, F ST. LOUIS, MISSOP'RI, LASSIGNOB TOEUGENE J'. FEINER, OF i a Y ST.: LOUIS, 'MISSOURI f a `citizen'of the United States, und resident lof St. Louis To all whom .it my conc'em:
vBe it known that I, RICHARD W. HAMANN,
Missouri, have invented certain new anduseiul Improvements in Boiler-Tube Cleaners, -of which the following is a speci catioiiv containing a'full, clear, and exact -,description, reference being had to the ac- .companying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention;vv relates "to a boilertubecleaneri thelobjectof my invention being to L constructie Y simple apparatus particularly adapted foiiise` in connection-with water tube bilersf'and which apparatus is utilized `ets .of steam or compressed forjdirecting 'tween the Water tubes of Aa I boilerinorder'to remove all soot, ashes and if ,likeacciimulationswhicliinterfere with the,

Y Located on vbustion from th Referring by numerals tio the accompanying drawings, 1 designates the 'boiler setting, 2 the boiler, 3 thewater'tubes, and fthe rear water leg'to which the .tubes 3 are conwater tu es 3 atthe rear portion of'the boiler, is a layerx oi tile which causes the Specification of Letters Patent. appiicanon `inea January 25, i909. serii No. 414,023.

roducts of combustion to pass toward the.,
orward end .of the tubes 3 after around the rear end of the layer 5 lo tile.
Supportedby 'the lower row ofi-tubes 3,
immediately adjacent the lower end of the water leg 4, is a-series of tilebloeks 7 and passing arranged to rock thereon is a transversely` v disposed tubular nozzle 8 on which is forme a. longitudinall disposed rib 9, andfoxmed i /througli this ri is .a row ofA jetr apertures 10,
the same-being preferably arranged atsli ht the axisof the tub arl 'angles relative to nozzle in order', that the jctsieffsteam or will 'readily-pass betweenJ the;1.- uppermost rows of'boilertubes, which rows .are stag "compressed air issuingfroin said apertures gered relative to one anotherr,4 One end of this tubular nozzle is closed and theoppos'ite end is connectedto ahorizontalljdisposed J pipe l1 which. is arranged to.4 ;r'ock' a bearin(1r 12 located in the corresponding side Wall ci? the boilersettrng 1 andthe outer end v of said pipe 1l is connected bymslilp joint 13 to a horizontally dispose tubu ar 'extelnsionlil connected to a uid'pressure sup- P y cutvalve 1G. Connected to the lower end of this supply pipe 15 is an air inlet valve housing 17 in which is arranged for operation a normally opened spring held valve` 18, which closes upon its seat within the housing 17 when the fluid pressure is turned on through the supplly pipe 15. Fixed upon e 11 is a co ai' 19 and formed intethe pi erewith isav vhandle 20 by means of gral t which rocked when the device is in use. 1
The tubular nozzle 8 'construited as described is arranged on the row of tile blocks 7 in such a ,positiomas the jet openings 10 ppe 15 in which is located anordinary o 9d the pipe 11 and tubular -nozzle are will discharge jets of steam or compressed air over the layer of tile"'5 .and upward betweenvthe water tubes 3 above said row of tile.- 'And to remove'soot, .ashes and like accumulations from the row of tile 6, -I provide a second tubular nozzle, suoli as 8", which is arranged yto noch ontop of Athe uppermost row of watrtubes 3, ate y behind the front water leg 4" andthe jet openings in this .last mentio tubular nozzle are positioned so as to direct jets of ioo immedisteam or'coinpressed air over the horizontal row of tiles 6 and through the space be-- neath the boiler 2. l The outer en .of lthis tubular nozzle -8** is connected to aliud 'pressure supply pipe which is provided with a valve 16a and connected to said -sup ly pipe is a normally opened air inlet va ve 17. This tubular nozzle is rocked by means of a handle 2l which is connected to the handle 20 Which corresponds to the handle 2 0 previouslydescribem and the valve 16" is actuated by means of a handle 22 pivotally connected to the', outer end by a lever 23 which is fixed on the stem of said valve 16.' Where my improved cleaning device is applied toa battery of boilers' and it is not possible to connect thetubular nozzle with a supply ipe at the side of the boiler setting, meta boxes 24 are located in the side walls-of the boiler'settings and the duid pressure supply pipes l5 are extended through the endwalls of the boiler-,settings l and connected ,to the pipcsls within said boxes 24, which arrangement is clearly shown in Fi ..'6; In this form of cleaning device the tu ular nozzle is made up of a series of shorutuhular sections 25, one end of Aeach section being'tapered as desicna'ted by 26 in order yto lit into the corresponding tapered opening Vformed in the opposite en d jacent section, and to lock the var1- ous sections to one' another, 'keys or pins 27 l .lare inserted. `through coinciding apertures `30, w .Fi
-formed in the ends of said sections 25. (See s. 7 and'8.
en 'my unproved cleaner isn use the t :valve 16,is opened to turn on the steam or f 4compressed air through the supply pipel and .said steam .or compresse air' passes lnto the tubular nozzle .8 and i'ssues from the jet openings l() formed therein. The hani dle 20 is now en a ed andthe tubular nozi zleis rocke'dgslg t y, thuscausing the jets o'stea-m or-'compressed air to blow over the layer of tile 5 and upward between the water tubes 3 thus removin the soot, ashes and likeaccuniulations, an causing same to pass to the forward portion othe boiler setting with the natural and forced draft through saidsettng and said soot' and ashes are carried upward into the space between the layer of Atile` and theboiler shell 2. When the valve 16* is opened and the 'tubular nozzle 8a is rocked', jets of steam or compressed air will be-directed over thelayer of tile 6 and through the space between said laverof tile and-the boiler shell 2 thus eEect-ually removing 'all of the soot, ashes and like accumulations from the interior of the boiler settingl and causing said accumulation to passte the stack.
p The tubular nozzle can be operated independent-ly or simultaneously y to eiect the cleaning out operation and when the valves in the fluid pressure supply pipes leading to said nozzles are closed, the air inlet valves Vconnected to said fluid pressure supply p ipes are automatically opened to permitH -air to enter said tubular nozzles and dis- .charge through the jet openings thereof, tht] maintaining said nozzles in a comparativel cool condition. The row of tile blocks serve as a supportfor the nozzle 8 and als serve to protect the same 'a ains't the intens` heat of the flame and pro ucts of combus tion whichpass to the rear of the layer o tile- 5. The jet openings 10 are formed o: slight angles in order to cause the jets o steam or compressed air to travel on angle over the surfaces of the tubes 3 and thus el ject. a more perfect cleaning action that where the jets are projected on direct line against the surfaces of said tubes.
The tubular nozzles While in use ar heated toa considerable de ee and wher steam isv used as a medium or effecting th cleanin operation, said steam will issu from t 1c jet 'openings in. a compar'ativel; dry condition owing to said steam being su perheated within the tubular nozzles.'
. A cleaning device of'iny im roved con struction is comparatively Simp e, is easil; installed, can be applied toeither a singl boiler or a battery of boilers, isespecially ap the nozzle when not in use.
