Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 29, 1909.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSEPH M. BAINER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marysville, in the county of Union, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kitchen-Cabinets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cabinets of the type of kitchen cabinets wherein the cabinet is divided into two sections with a movable table or leaf between the two.
The invention relates more particularly to a support for the top section of such a cabinet.
It is a well known fact that most kitchen cabinets are provided with a sliding leaf between the upper and lower sections and that this leaf slides between two guide battens one on either side of the lower section. This is a very objectionable feature inasmuch as flour and dirt collect in the crack or groove 'between the leaf and the two battens.
One object of the present invention is to provide a means for supporting the upper section so that the leaf can be made the full width of the lower section.
Another object of the invention is to provide a means for connecting a kitchen cabinet base and top so that they are firmly held in spaced relation and permit the easy movement of the table leaf therebetween.
IVith the above and other objects in View the invention consists in general of a structure of the kind described wherein the upper and lower cabinets are held in spaced relation by a novel form of brace.
The invention further consists in certain novel details of construction and combination of parts, hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and specifically set forth in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, like characters indicate like parts in the several Views, and: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cabinet constructed in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of a portion of one of the rear corners of such a cabinet, having a brace secured thereto, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective View of the brace from the inside showing the spacing member.
The numeral 10 indicates the lower portion or base of the cabinet and the numeral 11 the upper portion and this cabinet is here shown as being of the common type of kitchen cabinet.
At 12 is indicated the usual sliding top or table and in the present instance this is shown as of the full width of the lower portion 10. It will be noticed that in this con struction there are no guide battens used for the table top, the same being guided from below in any suitable manner not deemed necessary here to be shown.
At each of the rear corners of the cabinet is a brace comprising the body portion L- shaped in cross section as indicated by the numeral 13 and provided with projecting lugs 14 and 15 having apertures therethrough to receive the screws 16 whereby the brace is held firmly on the cabinet. That portion 18 of the L-shaped body which projects behind the cabinet is also provided with apertures 17 to receive screws similar to those used in holding the side of the cabinet. Intermediate of the ends on the inside of the brace thus formed there is a spacing lug 19 of suitable dimensions to permit the easy movement of the leaf 12 under the side walls of the upper member 11 of the cabinet.
In applying this brace the same is secured to the lower portion with the spacing lug 19 resting on the upper edge of that portion and the upper portion 11 is then set on the spacing lug 19 of the two corners and the upper part of the brace secured to that portion. In this manner the upper member 11 of the cabinet is firmly held in spaced relation to the lower member and the table leaf may be drawn out or pushed in with great ease and it may be made as wide as desired. There has thus been provided a simple and eflicient device of the character described and for the purpose specified.
