UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL A. NEIDICH, OF BURLINGTON, NEW JERSEY.
COMPOSING-STIGK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL A. NEIDICH, of Burlington, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Composing-Sticks, whereof the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My improvement relates to devices for picking and assembling type from a case in which they are arranged to gravitate in re spective channels to respective discharge recesses, and includes means for redistributing the assembled type to their respective channels in said case.
My invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
In the drawings; Figure I, is a front elevation of a composing stick having at one end a fork for picking up the type, and at its other end a head for redistributing the type. Fig. II, is a side elevation of the stick shown in Fig. I. Fig. III, is a transverse sectional view of said stick, taken on the line III, III, in Figs. I and II. Fig. IV, is a transverse sectional view of said stick, taken on the line IV, IV, in Figs. I and II. Fig. V, is a perspective view of the lower end of the stick shown in Figs. I and II, with the distributing head shown detached. Fig. VI, is a front elevation of said stick, minus the distributing head. Fig. VII, is a front elevation of a modified form of stick having a guiding head at one end and a stationary plug at the other. Fig. VIII, is a fragmentary vertical sectional view showing a convenient form of type case with which said stick is adapted to cooperate. Fig. IX, is a perspective view showing a pair of channels for supporting a line of type in said case, and the cooperation of the composing sticks therewith, to distribute type therein and pick type therefrom. Fig. X, is a per spective view of a type of a convenient form to cooperate with said stick.
My invention comprises the various novel features of construction and arrangement hereinafter more definitely specified.
Referring to the form of my invention shown in Figs. I to VI, inclusive, the tubular body of the stick 1, having the type slot 2, is provided at one end with the fork 3, for picking up the type. Said fork comprises the shank 4, fitted within the body 1, and has at its free end the two tines 5, so

mit the type web 7, to slide in said slot with said channel flanges 13, engaging the recesses 9, in the type. Said type are normally retained in said holder by the abutment 14, which extends from the abutment plate 15, in opposition to the end of said slot 12. However, discharge recesses 16, are provided between said abutment 14, and the ends of the channels 11, of such dimensions as to permit the type to be withdrawn singly when in contact with the abutment; the composing stick being applied as shown in Fig. IX, so that its tines 5, embrace the abutment 14, and engage the type in contact therewith. As shown in Figs. I and II, the opposite end of said body 1, is provided with the type distributing head 18, having an inclined plane at the end of a slot registering with'the slot 2, in said body and terminating in the recess 19, of such extent as to permit the withdrawal of a single type when in contact with the abutment 20, which prevents the discharge of the type .in the direction of the length of the stick, like the abutment 14, in the type holder above described. As shown in Fig. IX, said discharging head is adapted to cooperate with said type channels 11. It is to be understood that when the abutment 20, on said stick is inserted between said channels 11, as shown in Fig. IX, and lowered so that the single type 8, in contact with said abutment has its recesses 9, en gaged with the upper ends of said channels 11, which are conveniently beveled like the adjacentend of said head 18, said type may be removed from the stick by lowering the latter, so that said type is raised out of said recess 19 by the upper ends of said channels 11, and, when thus removed will slide down the typespace 12, in which it is stored, until removed by the forked end of said stick as above described. Said distributing head 18, is removably secured to the stick solely by frictional engagement with the guide studs 24, which extend in the sockets 25, in
said head when the latter is attached to the stick as shown in Figs. I and II. Said studs 24, are so proportioned and arranged that when the head 18, is removed as shown in Figs. V and VI, the stick may be presented with its type slot 2, in alinement with a type space between channels like the channels 11, shown in Fig. IX, so as to permit all the type in the stick to be discharged in a line in the direction of the length of the stick. The discharge of type from the stick may be controlled by the gate 27, shown in Fig. IV, which is a plunger comprising pa 'allel limbs mounted to reciprocate transversely in the tubular body of said stick and, under pressure of the spring 28, against its knob 29, is normally presented in position to prevent the passage of the type. However, by pressing said knob 29, inwardly, against said spring 28; said gate may be opened to permit passage of the type longitudinally in the stick.
It may be observed that the form of my invention shown in Figs. I to VI, inclusive, is adapted for picking up type singly and either distributing them singly or discharg ing them in a continuous line. However, it is to be understood that a stick adapted to receive a continuous line of type from a chase and to redistribute them to said holder may be constructed as shown in Fig. VII, wherein the tubular body 30, which is similar to the body 1, shown in Fig. 1, is provided at one end with the guiding studs 31, similar to the guiding studs 24,-, above described; whereby it may be presented with its slot 32, in alinement with a slot in the chase, and, said body 30, has at its opposite end the stationary plug 34:, serving to close that end of the slot 32. In order to distribute the type from said slot 32, the dis tributing head 18, may be fitted upon the studs 2%, and used as above described.
I do not desire to limit myself to the precise details of construction and arrangement above described, as it is obvious that various modifications may be made therein without departing from the essential features of my invention as described in the appended claims.
