Description
E. N, PETTIGREW. CONCRETE WALL.' APPLICATION .FILED AUG.23, 1909.

HERBERT NOEL PETTIGREV, OF NEW ORLEANS, LOUISIANA.
CONCRETE 'WALL Specification of Letters atent.
fatented pr. i2, i916.
To all tlfiiom it 'muy concern:
siding at New Qrleans` in the parish ot Orleans and State ot Louisiana, have invented a new and useful :Concrete 'all, ot' which the following` is a speeilication.
It is the object ot the present invention to provide an iinproved construction olf buite ing)- wall and also to provide a novel torni ot g biiildiiiblock, and the invention further discloses a novel inetliod ot' buildingg` up a i wall of this characiertroni the blocks einl'iodying,r the invention.
One feature ot' the invention resides in coiisti-actingl a wall ot blocks arranged in two tiers, which are spaced and between which are ai' inged intersectingl bonding rods, and, in tilting in the space between the two tiers with cenient or concrete or other suitable plastic composition, which.I when it sets, will irinly hold the bonding rods in place.
The invention further contemplates the provision ot supporting` blocks for the bonding rods, and also for bracing and properly spacing,r the hloe'ks oi' -the two tiers.
in the accompanying drawino's:mitigare l is a plan view of a section 0I a building wall constructed troni the blocks embodying the present invention, the wall being shown in its eoinpleted form. Figf? is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a siinilar view on the line Yof Fig. l.
In the drawings each ofv the building blocks embodying,r the present invention, that is, so far as concerns the blocks which con` stitute portions of the wall other than the corners, is indicated by the numeral 5, in general. Each of the blocks has its body portion indicated by the numeral t3, and one tace of the body portion of each block plane, this being the face which is presented outwardly when the blocks are arranged .in tiers in constructing the wall illustrated in Fig. l ot the drawings. Upon the other face of each block 6 at a point midway of the ends thereof, there is provided an integral thickened portion 7, and upon this portion, between the upper and lower ends thereof, is an outstandingr boss 8. It will be understood, from an inspection ot' the drawings, that the thickened portion T ot' each block extends from the upper to the lower edge; ofthe body ot' the hloclcrand that the outstandinrf boss 8 is of a height less than f Y i v pm iie it known that l. lli-.unitari wo-.1. lin- TIoiiIfw, a citizen of the linited States, rc-
the height oiz the thickened portion. Fun ther. that lnce ot' the bod)v (i ot the block upon which the -thiekened portion 7 is tornied, is foi-ined at each end with an outstanding boss il, which is ot the saine dimensions as the bos-.s t3 and is similarly located y as regards. the iippe and lower edges of the body ot` the block.
ln building up the wall, the first step coniii iirrang'inp the blocks iii two tiers, one tier ctiiistiiiitiiiicgv an inner wall Section,
and die other tier constituting an outer 'all section, and, when properly arranged, the thickened portion i' ot the blocks ot one tier ill be located directly opposite the meeting ends ot the corresponding blocks ofthe other tier. ln elleet therefore, the building wall, when so far completed, consists ot an inner wall .si tion and an outer wall section, the two sections being :torined upon their op- ;'iosing laces with onlstani'ling bosses, which are correspondingly oppositely arranged. lt will 'tiiriher be observed troni an inspeetioii ot' the drawingsv that the bosses 8 out- 'staud to a greater distance than do the bosses fi, owing to the tact that the toriner are lornied upon the thickened portions 7 of the blocks,
Atiter arranging the blocks as above stated` or, rather, as the Wallis built up, solid oblong blocks l0 are disposed one beneath the corresponding bosses S and 9 oteacli pair of opposed blocks, and one of such blocks l() is also disposed upon these bosses, the bosses serving,- as will be readily understood, as supports for the blocks. For the sake of convenience, reference will be had to big. .of the drawings in connection with a niore detailed description ot' the inanner of building up the wall. The block l() which is inheated in this tifure by the reference character o having' been placed in position prior to the disposal ot' the l .verinost blocks 5 in the position shown, theV next block l() above the block a, indicated by the reference character is disposed upon the .opposing bosses which, in this instance, are indicated by the reference character c, but prior to such arrangement ot the block a bonding rod or wire ill is placed in position between the opposing bosses c and nearer that one of the bosses c which is iorined upon the thickened portion T ot' one ot the blocks 'lhe next step in the building operation consists in placing-'one of the blocks 10, indi 'ated speeieniiy by the refeence cin-.meter d, upon 'the upper Surface of he bioek Z2, sind with ends projecting. over the upper end of the thickened poi-tion that 'nieek 5 .xiiieh Shown in section, TW@ others of the bieden 5 ae then disposed upon the bleks 5 beim-e referred to, but are reversed .Sih respect theiee, as eleai'iy Shown in the said drawings, and this operation is'repened uniii he vnii has been built te the desired height, after which n Concrete, cement ei' other Suitable composition, is poured ino hosees S is i'rne only so im' genis 'the height of hese bOSSeS, as they ae, in eeny, 0? e e wnidi, and, :is e inaer of fixer, ie bosses :it the lneeing ends of each une .eleekn of enen tier eepeine te aiferd n ennipesiie bess of ine sinne 'wi'iiiii ne one n' "Vlie, leensinetinn is clear.
