To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. FHANK'R; Hill-1N, a citizen of the United States, residing at Decatur, in-the county of Macon and'State 5 of Illinois, have invented certain new and isetul Improvements in Building Construction, of which the following is a specification. j
This invention relates to double wall structures and the principal object is the provision of a double wall construction composed of a plurality of pre-cast slabs or units having means for securely fastening or connecting the opposed units together and also having means for spacing the units apart, and providing supportin posts, studs or columns, which may be left hollow or filled with cement, at variousintervals thruout the length of the wall structure.
Another object of this invention is the provision in a wall of this character of slabs or units having laterally extending flange members which are arranged to cooperate with the corresponding flange members on the opposed slabs or units or with interposed filler blocks or slabs, whereby the opposed slabs or units may be positioned a greater or less distance apart.
Other objects of this invention include improvements in details of construction and arrangement whereby astrong and simple double wall construction is provided which may be quickly erected and which is strongly bonded and held together.

Referring first to Figs. 1 and 2 01"" the drawings, the numeral 10 designates one of theslabs or units which may be of any size and shape and which are preferably provided with a groove llfon one edge and the corresponding tongue 12 on the other edge, so that adjacent slabs or units will interfit. These slabsor units ma I also be provided. with interfitting or interlocking end parts 13, (see particularly Fig. 4) for additional security.
In casting these slabs or units I may also provide laterally extending flange members 14 and 15, which are adapted to be posi- -tioned opposite each other when the wall is constructed, the flange member 14 having the groove 16 in the end thereof and the flange member 15 having the corresponding tongue 17 in the end thereof whereby the opposed flange members may have an interlitting relation, lVith this arrangen'ient the two parts of the double wall are comparatively close together] If it'is desired to separate these two parts of the wall a greater distance, I utilize the filling slabs or units 18 which have the corresponding tongue 19 and groove 20 on their ends so that they may interfit with the correpondin grooves and tongues on the ends of the flange members 14 and 15, as shown particularly in Fig. 1. Of course, it 1s to be understood that these blocks or slabs may be of any width so that the two parts of the double wall may be positioned at various distances apart, as illustrated in Fig. 2, where the lower part of the wall is constructed so that the two parts thereof are separated a greater distance than the two parts in the upper part of the wall, the essential features of the construction being exactly the same and the dimensions only, of the parts, being varied.
It is to be noted that the use of these flange members 14 and 15 with or without the filler blocks 18 provide a vertically extending hollow column, stud or post. In order to secure the parts together properly, I utilize the hook members or rods 21 which are designed to connect the opposed slabs, the opposed pairs of flanges 14 and 15 or the opposed filler blocks 18. These hook members engage the exposed parts 22 of the reinforcing rods or wires which extend longitudinallly near the edge parts of the various units, this exposure being made by providing the recesses or sockets 23 of suiticient size to expose suitable lengths of the rods or wires and to receive the hooked ends of the members 21. This forms a simple, convenient and effective method of securely binding and connecting the o posed parts together. This connection may be rendeled more secure and permanent by filling the hollow column or post with cement or other suitable plastic material. This is done or not, depending upon the character of the building, that is, whether it is desired to be a temporary construction or a permanent construction.
The construction shown in Fig. 3 is the same in all essential details with that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, except that the laterally extending flange members 14 and 15 are omitted. The filler slabs or units 24 are positioned at various intervals thruout the length of the wall and these filler slabs or units, as well as the opposed parts of the main slabs or units are connected by the hook members 21, the construction being exactly the same as that. shown in Fig. 1. This is merely a somewhat simpler form of construction.
In Fig. 4, I show another slightly modified form in which the slabs or units 10 are provided with the laterally extending flange members 25 which are arranged to have interlocking and interfitting end parts 26 similar to the interlocking and interiitting ends 13of the slabs or units 10. The exposed reinforcing members may be similarly connected by the hook members 21 as previously described.
In Fig. 5 of the drawing 1 illustrate the various features of construction hereinbefore described and also certain other details of construction which are within the purview of my invention and cooperate to provide means for taking care of peculiar conditions arising from the erection of such structures.
Referring first to Fig. 6, the numeral 27 shows an intermediate facing and bracing unit. This unit may be used at an intermediate place in the wall and also at the joint of the adjacent slab. It is provided with the cut out portion 28 on each edge terminating in the feather edges 29 which are the bearing edges engaging the inner surfaces of the opposed members of the double wall construction which reduces to a minimum the possibility of conveying dampness thru the wall. The upper portion of this unit is provided with the longitudinally extending groove or recess 30 which is adapted to receive the securing rod or hook 21 previously described. The ends of this hook are secured over the exposed portion of the reinforcing wire, as previously described and as clearly illustrated in Fig. 5. This particular description applies to the use of this unit as an intermediate supporting and bracing element.
l Vhere it is used at the joint between adjacent slabs a slight modification is preferably made in the construction of the slabs or units, this being particular y illustrated in Fig. 8 and also at the bottom of Fig. 5. In these slabs or units the interfitting tongues and grooves are provided on the ends, as indicated at 31 and 32, but the tongue 31 does not extend the full width or height of the unit, terminating a short distance from the top edge thereof, the remainder of the edge being formed with the groove 33 which matches with the oppositely disposed groove 82. It is in these openings that the hook members 21 are positioned, it being, of course, understood that they rest in the recess 30 formed in the top of the unit 27. This recess, as
well as the openings in the edge parts of the slabs or units may be filled witheement or other suitable plastic material, so as to permanently secure the hook .i'neinbers in position.
In order to provide an intermediate supporting means for the units which support the joistsot' the building I utilize a particular form of filler block 3%, see Fig. 7, which is olfthe general conformation of the previously described filler block or unit 18, having however, in addition thereto, the overhanging flange or shoulder on which these supporting units may rest.
At the inside corner coinitruction where the two inner members of the double wall intersect, I. provide the slabs or units 36 and 37'. These slabs or units have the oppositely disposed cut out portions or recesses 38' and 39whereby these slabs may inter-lit and intersect, as shown in Fig.
In the event that the double wall construe tion is utilized without the spacingor filler blocks 18, it may become necessary to inter-pose a suitable waterproof composition between the two members of the wall. This is illustrated in Fig. 9, the numeral ll) designating this composition.

It is to be noted also that in thesewall constructions the interlitting and interlocking end parts break joints so as to render the construction: stronger, as is well understood. 7
Having described my invention what I claim is 1. A construction of the character described, including in combination, a plurality of slabs or units arranged to form a, double wall construction, certain of said slabs orunits in each part of: said double wall having laterally extending flanges adapted to interfit with the opposed flanges whereby hollow columns or posts are provided at intervals thruout the length or the wall, and filler blocks interposed between said laterally extending flange members whereby hollow columns or posts are provided thruout the length of the wall, and securing means extending across said hollow columns or posts for holding said parts together.
2. A construction of the character described including in combination a plurality of slabs or units adapted to be arranged to torn'ra double wall construction, certain of said. slabs or units in each part having laterally extending flangemembers, certain of the flange members being providedwith a tongue on the end and others being provided with a groove on the end whereby said opposed flange members may inter-lit, and filler blocks or members, each oi? which has a tongue on one end and a groove on the other end adapted to fit with'the correspond ing tongues and grooves on the ends of the laterally extending flange members whereby hollow columns or posts may be provided at intervals thruout the length of the wall construction, and securing means extending, across the hollow columns orposts for holding the parts together.

A construction of the character described including in combination a plural ity of'slabs or units arranged to provide a double wall construetiomeach of said slabs or units having longitudinally extending reinforcing rods positioned near the edge thereof, means interposed between the two parts of said wall for spacing the same apart, certain of'said units being formed ith recesses to expose parts of said reinforcing rods and hook members adapted to connect the exposed parts of said reinforcing rods in the opposed members.

A construction of the character described, including in combination, a plurality of slabs or units arranged in two series to provide a double wall construction, each of said slabs or units having a tongue and groove construction at one end whereby adjacent units may interfit, certain of said tongue constructions being cut away a short distance and the end of this unit being provided with a recess adapted to register with the corresponding recess or groove in the adjacent slab or unit to provide an opening and securing means extending between the two parts of the double wall construction and having hooked ends positioned in said opening.
