l Be it known that :wepoiin' i 'Eamonn l and Gunners E. Bruins,l citizens of the; United States, and residents of the'city oft Chica o, county of ook, and .Stute of lllii nols, ave invented certain new andnsefiil Improvements in scrubbing-Brushes;fend` -we do hereby declare lthat the following is c a full, clear, and exact description of, thev same,"referen ce being had to the accompanymarked thereon, which forni a part othis. specification.
This invention relates to improvements in scrubbing brushes and more particularly to a scrubbin brush of thatclass adapted to permit a ow of water. therethrough from an suitableb hose connection.
n devices of this class it is desirable that the How of Water to the surface being cleaned beet ali times within the control of the I operator so that the desired quantity may supplied withoutinterrupting the scrubl bmg operation. It is also desirable that the water may be supplied at intervals or intermittently without necessitating the operator releasing his grip on the handle` and1 consequently interrupting theinoveinent of the brush.
The object of this invention is to provide a brush adapted to permit a flow of water therethrough and having niveaus whereby the flow ovf'water can be easily ycontrolled bythe operator without releasing `his grip onthe handle or stopping the motion of the brush. It is also an object `of the invention to I provide a hollow brush head adapted to con the-floor as well as scrubbing it.
tain soap or any washing coinpound to acilitate thev scrubbing.
Furthermore it is an important object of the invention to provide a brush having vfine wires of a resilient and non-rusting charac4 ter such as fine brasswires which serve in lieu of bristles and under the action of water serve to abrade the floor or scrubbed surface slightly thus dressing the snrfaceof It is a further object of the invention to provide a cheap, simple and durable cont struction in 'which the brush may be readily removed for the purpose -rof repair or ref' newal.
Awhich abuts against the outer ,end of said 4The invention consists in the inatteifs lierej A Speemtion Letters latent.-A Patented Apr, 12 1910. 'Animation sied :luy 1v, 190s. semi No. simu; i
out and defined in 'the appended claim. In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary view partly in section of a device einbodying our invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom 1 plan view of the brush. Fig. 3 is a sect/ion taken on line 3-3 of Figui with 'parts re- 60 moved. Fi 4 is an enlarged fra entary longitudine section of the controlling valve. l, As shown in the drawings: The brush com rises a back, `or plate A of arr de material, and shape but whic ne 'as shown, is rectangular 'and is providedion,
sire the under-side thereof with the-blush terial a which may besecured thereon iiil I any desired manner and which consists' wholly or in part of ne resilient brass or other non-rusting wires. Said buck is vided with a pll'urality of apertures a ther-ir-A c may be arranged. in any de-l sired manner to perrr'iit the 'Water to low,
downwardly through the brushinaterial 7b to the loor or other surface being cleaned; but as shown, they are r1-ran ed in a lon'- gitudinal line centrally of the ack.
An upwardly directed, peripheral sho der a2 isprovided on the margins of sind 8o back, upon which isseated the margin of a downwardlv o ening vCasinl or head B which fits c oseiy to said ack and is provided at each end thereof with an interuel lug or boss b having a downwerdly opening, threaded a erture or socket ther' in which are secure the fastening screwsw l which extend through said back. v l The head Bp may bevof any desired com' struction and inaterial and. is provided ,centrally with a laterally andupwardly'flirected apertured boss or socket b? whichl opens from said casing and. which as shown. i
is provided at its outer screw threads, n r y A tapered sleeve or valve casi-n 'C' proe'cts throu h said socket into said` cad and as three ved engagement in said ib and is provided within peripheral flange c ,end with internal D indicates a tubular handle, the lower-165 or inner end of which as shown is rotaf enfin? described mi more fuujf pointed' 55 desired material y binding nut d tively engaged inthe outer: end' of said -salve' easiing C and abute against an' inwardlydi rected shoulder c2 therein. A 'hollow .valve plug or closure C of vany desired material is blazed or otherwise rigidly engaged at one end within. the inner end of said 'han die and tapers toward the other end oom.- plementally with said valve easing C in which it rotatively enga es and provides a controllingv valve. Said plug or closure aifords a close littinfr joint with saidvave casing and isprovided with a plurality of aperturee' d adapted to register when in one position'with the apertures er lin aid casing. Any preferred means may be employed to securely but rotatively engage the handle and closure in the valve casing C but yas shown the outer end of said eloeure is provided with a lon 'tudinally directed threaded stem or bolt 5g which protrudes through the inner end of said valve easing and a is engaged 'on said bolt and bears against a packing washer d of any laced between the same and the end of said endhof said lhandle a/slovn is oonneeted wit a su i e ea in rorn any desired oli Iupply. for eigther hot or cold 'water and a valve d* of any desired construction is engaged in said end and by means of which the Supply of Water may be entirely cut-Kofi' if desired.
The operation is as follows: Vihen it isA desired to operate the brush, the out off valve d* is opened toipermit the Water to flow downwardly through the handle and when the apertures in the valve easing and closure arlin register, the Water passes into the head B and through thev brush A to the Hoor. Inasmuoh as the handle and valve closure are rotatively engaged in the valve easing C it is obvious that said closure may be rotated so as to bi'il'igthefapertures therein and in said sleeve .in exact register permitting a maximum flow through the brusnh, or it may be. rotated as Vto bring said apertures partiallypr Wholly ont of register valve'oasing. The outer' I l l f. i f
and thereby partiaily or wholly ont oil the How thus supplying 'any deaired quantity of Wate to the brush, Inaeniuoh the brush lies upon 'tire Surface being cleaned it is evident that a tvziing or rotary motion upon said handle while in operation iss Snifiioient to rotate the handle to regulate the Siipply of Water as desired Without necessitat-ing the operator releasingl his grip on the handle orintei'rnpting the movement of the brush.
luf preferred soap or other cleaning man terial may be carried in said brush head B Whereit will be subjected to the iow of Water to the brush and carried thereby to the surface to be scrubbed. The brush when constructed wholly or partly of fine resilient s vires acts to abrade 0r Seoul the door while scrubbing, in conse quence not only ie all the dirt removed but l d by reali Well the surface of the floor if; dre
the brush to some extent and is left l and bright. Y
Ubviously the 'oz-nen may be made of any desired Shape er size and many details of construction may 'oe varied without departing frein the prineipiee ofonr invention.
We claim as our invention:
The combination with a brush of a oas-r lng thereon provided "with an apertured bees,
an apertnred valve ease rigidly engaged in said bose and extending into the easing a hollow valve closure rotatively engaged 1n Said valve ceasing and provided with apertures therein aoapted to regieter with the a ertures in Said vai've Casin, and a tubular brush handle rigidly engaged to said Closure and adapted to rotatetlie saine.
In teatin'iony whereof We 'have hereunto subscribed our names in the presence of two Subscribing Witnesses.
