FASTENING FOR GASKET-TOPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE C. FRAZIER, of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fastenings for Casket-Tops, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, re erence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view, partly broken away, showing a casket having my invention applied thereto; Fie. 2 is a vertical section through one end portion of the casket, and showing the fastening; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-III of Fig. 2; Figs. 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 are detail views hereinafter more particularlly described.
My invention has re ation to fastenings for casket or coffin tops, and is designed to provide a fastening of simple and efficient character, whereby the top of a coflin or casket may be securely but removably secured in position on the coffin or casket.
The precise nature of my invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, which will now be described, it being premised, however, that various changes may be iliade in the constrllction and arrangement of thc various parts without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, as defined in the appended claims.
In these drawings I have shown my invention as applied to a metallic cofiin or casket, for which it has been more articularly designed, although it is readi y applicable to wooden constructions.
The numeral 2 designates the body portion of the casket, 3 the inner top carrying the glass, 4, and 5 the outer top. The inner top 3 is provided with the reinforcing strip G, around which the sheet metal is wrapped, as shown, screws 7 being passed through this reinforcing strip, and into a reinforcing strip 8 on the body for securing the inner top to the body, suitable packings or gaskets 9 being interposed. The outer top 5 fits over the inner top and overhangs the body portion, as shown, its end ortions being provided with the rein orcing pieces 10. Mounted in the reinforcin piece 10 at each end, is a vertically movab e bolt 11, shown in detail in Figs. 4 and 7, and which is adapted to engage a recess or slot 12 formed in the reinforcing member 6. The bolt 11 is slotted or recessed at 13 to receive a spring 14, which normally holds the lock bolt in its engaging position. Formed with or secured to the bolt is a finger catch or press 15, which depends between the inwardly turned edge 16 of the top 5, and the reinforced edges of the body and inner top 3, as shown in Fig. 2, in position to be engaged by the finger. Also secured to the reinforcing strip 10, at each end, is a latch piece or hooks 1T (shown in detail in Figs. t and 8) and adapted to enter a slot 18 in the reinforcing piece 6. The slot 18 is provided with the undercut shoulder 19 for engagement with the nose of the latch, as shown 1n Fig. 6.
The operation will be readily understood. When the top cover is applied to the casket, the latches or hooks 17 enter the recess 18; and the cover is then moved endwise sufficiently to cause the noses of the latches to engage underneath the shoulders 19. The bolts 11 are then forced by the springs into the recesses 12 and securely hold the top 5 against removal. When, however, it is desired to remove said toa the finger plates or presses 15 are engaged by the fin ers, and the bolts 11 are thereby retracte out of engagement with the slots or recesses 12.
The device forms a simple and effective device for the purpose, and can readily be a plied. When in use, the only portion of t e device which is visible is the finger plate or press 15, the remaining parts being concealed.
What I claim is:
1. A fastening for casket covers, -comprising a casket having a reinforcing piece on its upper edge, a cover also having a reinforcing piece and extending beyond the reinforcing piece on the casket, a latch mem ber constructed to engage and be disengaged from its keeper by endwise movement of the cover, a spring pressed bolt for normally presenting endwise movement located in the reinforcing piece on the cover, and a finger piece for releasin said bolt, said finger piece forming part o4 and extending approximately parallel with and to a point beyond the end of the bolt, the end of the finger piece being covered by the extending remorcing member on the cover; substantially as described.
