Description

HARRY RAYMOND WASEM, 0F FORT DODGE, IOWA.
SAND-DISTEIBUTER FOR LOCOMOTIVES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 5,1910..
Application lcd September 2,. 1909. Serial No. 515,865.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that l, Hanni RAYMOND VVASEM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort l'lodge, county of Webster, and State of iowa, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in SandDistributers `for Locomotives. ot. which the Vfollowing is a specification.
My invention relates to an improved sand distributor lor locomotives and hasjlor its object the production ot' such a distributor which shall be simple of construction and eliicient in operation.
' My Ainvention relates to the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed. v
My invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of a distributcr embodying my invention and indicating a portion oi the locomotive in dotted lilies, Fig, 2 is an enlarged vertical section through the distrilmter, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged elevation ot' the air nozzle employed therein.
"lhe distributor comprises a substantially goose-shapetfl casing l novided at'. its upper central portion with an upwardly extending threaded sleeve 2 having a central opening 3, an upwardly inclined discharge spout l and a downwardly inclined thrfaded opening 5. An air inlet pipe is mounted in opening 5 and provided with an upwardly inclined dischargc end T in substantial aline nient with thc discharge opening d. An air nozzle S is threaded or otherwise secured in the upper end ot inlet pipe ti which is also provided with a nut turning the same and a screw threadedsleevc l0 for attachment to an air pipe. lt will be observed that the air nozzle projects somewhat from the upper end ot pipe t5 and an annular space is formed around its projecting cud so that vdirt or scale .may collect in said space and not stop up said nozzle. By securing the air .nozzle with screw threads as shown1 the extent ol its projection may adjusted as desired. At its bottom and side respeta t'vely casiiig .t isprovidcd with threaded plugs itl and 12 to permit access 'thereto for cleaning.
i il
'lhe casing l is designed to be attached at the side of the boiler of a locomotive as indicated in Fig. l, the sand drum or box 13 being connected therewith through pipe 14 and sleeve 2 and a pipe 15 connected with pipe 6 leads to a compressed air supply in the cab ot' the locomotive and under the control ol the engineer. A discharge pipe 16 is connected by means of a threaded union member 17 with the discharge opening 4; of the casing and has its discharge mouth 18 located adjacent the track in front of the drivers oi the engine.
y In use the sand is supplied to the track by admitting a blast of air to air pipe 6 which serves to blow or force the sand out through discharge pipe 16 and onto the track in front. oit5 the engine drivers.
v It will be seen that the construction thus provided is very simple and eflicient in operation.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into etl'cct, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of my invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact construction set forth, but w.ish\
to avail myself ol' such variations and moditications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invent-ion what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Iatent is:
l. In a sand distributor, the combination of a substantially goose-shaped casing provided with a central top opening for the sand, an upwardly inclined discharge at one' 90 end7 and adownwardly inclined opening for the reception ot' au air pipe at the other end; an inlet pipe. threaded in said opening and having an upwardly inclined discharge end substantially in alinement with said discharge opening; and an air nozzle threaded in said au pipe near its upper end7 substantially as described.
ln a sand distributor, the combination of a substantially goose-shaped casing pro vided with a central bop opening for the sand, an upwardly inclined discharge at one ond and a downwardly inclined opening for the reception of an air pipe at tho other end;
, end substzxmtied'7 m ainement Wlth sind etw@ subseribmn Wltnesses.
5&3 esmas,
En. testimony Wheee have signed .my
am air net ppe theaded in said Opening 'name to dus specleatmn m ehe. plefsenee G3i and having an upwardly inclined scha'ge discharge opening; an. air nozzle threaded in said air pipe nem' its 'upper end; and threaded plugs in the bottom and side of said cas ing', substantely as described.
