HENRY 1VL KOLB, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
FIRING-PIN FOR HAMMERS FOB FIREARMS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 5, 1910.
Application filed November 1, 1909. Serial No. 525,644.
- T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. KoLB, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Firing-Pin for Hammers for Firearms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fire arms and more particularly to an improvement in fir ing pin construction for revolvers and the like and has for an object to provide a firing pin having a movement relative to the hammer, whereby it accurately cotiperates with certain adjuncts of the frame to contact with and discharge a cartridge.
In revolvers as heretofore constructed in which the firing pin forms a fixed part of the hammer, it has been necessary to slot the frame or else provide an opening some larger than the pin itself in order to allow for the proper angular movement of thepin. It has been found in practice that such slots or openings weaken the retaining wall of the frame and it therefore becomes necessary to provide a reinforcing means to withstand the blow of the hammer, which means are expensive to make and add materially to the cost. Furthermore, the slots or openings in present use are so large that an escape is provided for the gases of explosion and a deposit soon forms, which clogs the openings and prevents operation of the firing pins.
In my present invention I have devised a firing pin co-acting with anopening in the retaining wall of a revolver frame to accurately impart the blow of the hammer and so construct and reinforce the walls of the opening as to minimize the impact of the hammer.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth. 7
For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of a revolver embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a detail of the hammer and its adjuncts.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :-1 designates the frame of a revolver or like fire arm having a firing pin construction embodying my mventlon.
2 designates. an opening in the frame 1 forming a passageway between the hammer chamber 3 and the magazine chamber 4. In the present instance this opening 2 is tapered to provide a larger opening on the hammer side in order to accurately center the firing pin 5 in its movement with the hammer 6. It will be noted that the frame 1 has an offset 7 thereon adjacent the opening 2, whereby the walls of the frame are reinforced at this .point and an anvil-like structure provided to receive the full impact of the hammer 6 during a firing operation.
This feature is important, since heretofore the walls of the firing pin opening have been so weakened by the large slot or opening that the only bracing means devised have been complicated and the cost of same prohibitive. The hammer 6 is here shown pivoted at 8 in the usual manner and provided with the ratchet tooth 9 and face 10,
the former for cooperation with the trigger pawl 11 and the latter a seat for the spring 12, which serves to return the hammer 6 from contact with a cartridge. In the present instance the firing pin 5 is pivoted at 13 to the hammer 6, the latter having a suitable cut away portion 14 to receive the pin 5 and also form a seat for the body portion or heel 15 of the pin 5. i
16 designates a spring preferably fitting within a socket 17 of the hammer 6 and normally engaging the body portion 15 of the pin 5 so as to hold the latter angularly disposed relative to the face 18 of the hammer and in position to substantially aline with the opening 2. On the return or firing stroke of the hammer the pin 5 enters the larger end of the opening 2, where it contacts with the tapered sides and is swung on its pivot against the tension of spring 12 to accurately contact with the cartridge. The hammer face 18 at the end of the stroke contacts with the ofi'set or anvil 7, giving a sharp decisive blow through the pin 5 to explode the shell or cartridge. 7
It will now be apparent that I have devised a complete unitary structure particu- .larly adapted for the purpose intended and wherein the firing pin performs its function accurately while the blow of the hammer is taken care of by the novel strengthening means and there is no danger of the parts becoming broken or otherwise damaged.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel and-useful construction which embodies the features of advantage enumerated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in the present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereof which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the same is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a fire arm, a frame having a tapered opening, a hammer suitably mounted on HENRY M. KOLB.
