The variations shown in-Figs. 4 and 5 may be used to fit different styles of hair dressing, and as the claws are slidable along the shank, an infinite variety of positions may be obtained. It is also evident that the head A may be fixed to shank C if desired. The shank C may be .used without either head A or cap D. 1 In such case, in order to place the device in position, the end 11 may be forced through hat side 21 from the inside as far as necessary to permit the end 10 to be pushed into the inside of the crown of the hat. End 10 can then be forced through hat side 20 from the inside. Head A and cap D can now be screwed in'place or left oif and the device operated as described. eThe cap D may be omitted entirely if desired, but it is of advantage in that it prevents the wearer from inadvertently removing the device by pulling it out like an ordinary hat pin. With some hats, it is difficult to get at end. 11 with cap D on account of ribbons,

feathers, etc. In such cases, it can be left off as described.

It is evident that two or more fasteners may be' used if desired.

What I claim as my invention and desire a to cover by Letters Patent, is: I

1. Ina hat fastener, the combination of a shank which is pointed at both ends and is of other than circular cross section at its middle portion, withdetachable claws slidable and separately adjustable thereon.

2, In a hat fastener, a pointed shank which is round near both ends and non-circular in cross section at' its middle portion,

ahead at one end thereof, a plurality ofv claws slidable and separately adjustable upon said shank and fitting closely its middle portion, and a detachable cap 011 the pointed end of the shank as described.
