The object of my invention is to provide means enabling the same suction-box to be used for cutting wrappers of difi'erent sizes and shapes.

Two embodiments of my invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan view of a suction box, with my improved cutter applied thereto, a portion of the cutter being broken away; Fig. 2 is a vertical section on line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a plan view showing another form of my invention.

The suction box A has a perforated top A and is connected, as by means of a pipe B, with a suitable pump, fan, or other device for producing suction. On top of said box is placed removably the cutting plate C, which has an opening G of a shape corresponding to that of the wrapper to be cut, and a ridge C preferably sharpened, is located at the edge of the opening, this ridge forming a cutter against which the wrapper is pressed in the usual way by means of a roller drawn across the plate. The body of the plate, that is the portion surrounding the opening C, is imperforate and closes or seals the perforations of the top A which are covered by such body. Therefore, only those perforations which register with the opening C are exposed, and suction is exerted through these openings to keep the wrapper against the cutting ridge C The suction exerted through the other perforations simply draws the plate G downward. against the top A. This suction and the weight of the plate will be sufficient to hold it down firmly. The plate C is removable for instance by hinging it at G to the lugs A of the suction box, each hin e pin or pintle D being removable by pulling it out lengthwise, and a cotter pin E may be used to prevent accidental disengagement of the pintle.

When it is desired to cut a wrapper of a different size or shape, I withdraw the hinge pintles, remove the plate C, and substitute therefor another plate differing from it only as regards the size or shape of the opening 0. Other constructions may be adopted to enable different plates to be placed on the top of the suction box table A.

In some cases, as illustrated in Fig. 8, I might provide the plate 0 with an opening or cut-out portion 0 and with a cutting ridge 0 corresponding to one-half of the wrappers outline, as 1t may be desired to leave a portion of the wrapper uncut.

The perforated top A may be used as a table for placing the wrapper around the cigar in the well-known manner, the plate C (0) being swung aside or removed for this purpose.

It will be understood that the perforations of the top A extend over an area larger than the size ,of the largest opening C for which the device is intended, but as shown in the drawing, it is superfluous to perforate the entire top A.

I claim as my invention:

1. The combination of a suction box pro vided with a top having a series of perforations, a plate arranged to be placed upon said top and provided with an opening adapted to register with a plurality of said perforations at the same time, said plate being further provided with a cutting edge adjacent to said opening and having an imperforate portion located outside the opening and adapted to cover or seal a number of the perforations of the top.

2. The combination of the suction box provided with a top having a series of perforations and a plate arranged to be placed upon said top and having an opening arranged to register with a plurality of said perforations at the same time, said plate being further provided with a cutting edge adjacent to said opening and having an imperforate portion located outside the opening and adapted to cover or seal all the perforations of the top except those that register with said opening.

3. The combination of a suction box provided with a top having a series-of perforations and a plate movable into and out of contact with the upper surface of said top, said plate being provided with an opening arranged to register with a plurality of said perforations at the same time while the remainder of said perforations are sealed by the plate and further having a cutting edge adjacent to said opening.

5. The combination of a suction box provided with a top having a series of perforations and a plate adapted to be placed upon said top, said plate being provided with an opening having the shape of the cut intended to be made in a cigar wrapper, the

opening in said plate being arranged to reg- 1 ister with a plurality of the perforations in the top at the same time while the remainder of said perforations are sealed by the plate.

6. The combination of a suction box provided with a top having a series of perforations and a plate hinged to said box and movable into and out of contact with the upper surface of said top said plate being pro vided with an opening having the shape of the cut intended to be made in a cigar wrapper, the opening in said plate being arranged to register with a plurality of the perforations at the top at the same time while the remainder of said perforations are sealed by the plate.

7. The combination of the suction box provided with a top having a series of perforations, with the plate mounted on said top to swing about a horizontal axis, said plate being provided with an opening arranged to register with a plurality of the perforations in said top, and further having a cutting edge adjacent to said opening and an imperforate portion located outside of the opening and sealing a number of the perforations of said top.
