To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, Anvrx GEORGE Gnnn man, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lima, Allen county, Ohio, have invented new and useful Relief Devices for Cleaning Apparatus, of which the following is a.
specification.
This invention relates to a relief device.
This invention has utility when adapted for use in connection with cleaning apparatus.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of the invention in a vacuum cleaning apparatus; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view on an enlarged scale and partly in section of the nozzle with the relief device attached; Fig. 3 is a view in elevation of the device; and Fig. 4 is a view in central longitudinal section of the device.
The cleaning apparatus as shown embodies the pump 1 or suction mechanism, in communication with which is the dust or dirt collector 2, having extending therefrom the tubular line or duct 3, which through handle 4 is attached to a general type of nozzle, as 5, herein shown as provided with the dirt receiving opening (3. Spaced from the nozzle opening 6, independent of such opening and not obstructing the dirt travel ing passage'is the relief device. The nozzle is shown as having hole 7 tapped therein, threaded for the reception of the member 8, as herein embodied being in the form of a male T, having-at each terminal of the cross portion a cap 9 to retain balls 10 normally held in the central openings of the caps 9 by the spring 11. Space 12 permits adjustment of the caps 9 to vary the pressure at which balls 10 may. be unseated to permit inflow of air. In Fig. 4, at the left, the ball 10 is shown unseated, while at the right of the same figure, the ball 10 is seated.
In practice many advantages accrue from the use incident to the location of the device of this disclosure. Its operation is not Specification of Letters Patent.

contingent upon the specific form of nozzle, and hence it is generally applicable to cleaning apparatus nozzles. The device is not affected by the usual wearing away of the lower end of the nozzle, since the relief valve is attached at an opening some distance from the dirt receiving opening. Another advantage is that the interior of the nozzle is not obstructed by the relief valve, and hence the dust laden air is not retarded. But while the valve is on the outside of the nozzle it lies close to it, and the whole forms a compact structure.
What is claimed and it is desired to secure by Letters Patent is: v
l. The combination with a suction nozzle having a dirt receiving mouth and a current passage from said'mouth through said nozzle, of an exterior valve casing attached to said nozzle and communicating with said passage above said mouth, so as not to interfere with the entrance of dust laden air, and an automatic relief valve in said casing.
2. The combination with a suction nozzle having a dirtreceiving mouth and a current passage from said mouth through said nozzle, of an adjustable exterior valve casing attached to said nozzle and communicating with said passage above said mouth, so as not to interfere with the entrance of dust laden air, and an automatic relief valve in said casing.
The combination with a suction nozzle having a dirt receiving mouth and a current passage from said mouth through said nozzle, of a detachable exterior valve casing attached to said nozzle and communicating with said passage above said mouth, so as not to interfere with the entrance of dust laden air, and an automatic relief valve in said casing.
