' FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and-State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved Folding Box of which the following is a full, clear, an
r rexact description.
The principal obj'ectswhich the present invention has in view are to provide a folding box having an inner compartment so constructed that dampness is excluded from the box; to provide a folding box the outer wall of which is so constructed as to form no visible joint; to provide a construction wherein both the inner and outer ,walls of the box are provided with view openings which aline; and to provide a construction having a bin ed cover having the four struc tural sides rmly secured to form a rigid structure. 2

It is in recognition of the necessities above stated that I have provided a construction, herein shown and described, having two separate walls formed from blanks sepa rately constructed and essentially difierin For the convenience of descri tion- I w' l first describe the inner wall which is illustrated at Fig. 8 of the drawings.
As above stated, it is essential to the proper construction of-the inner wall that there shall be 'no openi or joint which would lead, throu h capi ary or other action, the moisture i -rom the bench or floor on which the box may be set, up to and within the containing portion of the box. The folded form above described is secured by means of the tabs 21, 21 andthe sockets 22, 22, so disposed on op osite sides as to receive the tabs 21, 21. e sockets 22,' 22 are formed substantially as shown in the drawings and of slightly'les's length than thelength-of the head of the tabs'21, 21.
The tabs 21, 21 are mounted upon extensions 23, 23, protruded from the extensions 20, 20,
on the one side of the blank forming the inner wall. I The extensions 23, 23 are of sufficient length to overlap the extensions 20, 20 on .the opposite side of the blank to permit the tabs 21, 21 to enter and engage the sockets 22, 22. When the side walls of the box are thus held in theirvertical position by reason of the engagement of the tabs 21, 21 with the sockets 22, 22, the structure of the inner wall of the box is further strengthened by tabs 24, 24 on extensions 25, 25, to be inserted within sockets 26, 26
' formed in the extensions 20, 20.
It will be noticed that with the turning bf the extensions 25, 25 down upon the folded extensions 20, 20 the passage between the 'folded extensions and the panels 17, 17
on the outside thereof is closed by the said extensions 25,25. This construction is such that should any water gain admission through the outer wall of'this box and be carried by capillary action upward between the walls of the extensions 20, 20 and the panels 17, it would be prevented from entering the'box through this passage by the folded extensions 25, 25. A further-purpose is served by the extensions 25, 25 in strengthening the anchorage of the various parts.
- 'With the'construc-tion above described, 1t Wlll be seen that we have a containing vessel to which the access of dampness from the outside except through the open top is completelyprevented.- At the same time, it will be seen that ,thesides are not such as would be desired for'a display box or carton.
The display feature in the completed box is provided by'the outer wall, formed from the blank as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. In this blank the panels 26,. 27, 28 and 29 form the vertical sides of the completed box. In this view of Fig. 7 as in Fig. 8, the dotted lines illustrate the scores or deep rulings upon which the material is bent.
The bottom of the box is formed by panels 30,31, 32 and 33. These panels are sepa-;
rated from the adjacent panels by severing cuts,as shown by the full lines separating them. They are folded at right angles .to the side forming the panel to which they are connected. They overlap from. opposite directions when the panels 26, 27, 28 and 29 are formed to a rectilmear shape. In this position of the side panels the tabs 34, 34 of the panel 32 are brou ht into position, to be in-, 'serted' within soc ets 35, 35 formed in the panel30, and the tabs 34 of the panel 31 are inserted within the sockets 35 formed in the panel 33. The bottom thus formed for the outer wall is a stron structure, consisting in the major part 0 .four thicknesses, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6. l
the panel 29 separating; from the panel 26, the latter .is provided with a lateral extension 36, which when bent'at rigl'it angles to the panel 26 is glued, stapled or sewed to the panel 29. When thus folded and secured together, the panels 26, 27, 28 and 29 form a substantial and rigid box like structure.
This structure is slightly larger than .the
structure formed from the blank illustrated in Fig. 8 of the drawings, as it 'is intended that the inner wall formed fromthe blank shown in Fig. 8 shall be inserted within the outer .wall formed by the blank shown in Fig.7. The difference in size is slight, to.
require some little pressure to force the one within the other.
Where the coinpleted box is to be used to contain articles it is desired to display, both the blank forming the inner wall and the.
blank forming the outer wall are cut to form an opening37, 37; These openings aline when the two formed structures are forced together, as above set forth. The inner wall is rovided while in the blank with a sheet of lsinglass, mica or other material 38. This is glued or otherwise secured tosa'id wall. The covering for the opening 37 in the inner .wall is preferably secured to the outside-of the said wall.
The completed' box is hinged cover formed by a panel 39 which is attached to the panel 29 substantially as shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. From each of the sides of the panel 39 areextended flaps 40 and 41, 41. All of the flaps are of the same width. Those designated as 41, 41 are bent from the panel, to overlap the completed box and are provided with sockets 42, 42, shaped substantially as shown in-said Fig. 7 of the drawings. The flaps 40, 40 are provided with end extensions 43, 43, on which are formed tabs 44, 44, adapted to extend within and engage the sockets 42. When the flaps 40, 40 and 41, 41 are bent from the panel 39 and secured by the tabs 44, 44 engaging with the sockets 42, 42, a cover is formed for the box which resembles in structure and operation the hinged covers of metal and wooden boxes. The hinge is formed by the scoring "interposed between the panel 29 and the adjacent flap 40; It will be noticed that the scoring which separates the panel 29 from the flap 40' interposed between the said panel 29 and thesaid panel 39 is disposed below the up er edge of the box structure formed 'bythe b ank shown in Fig. 7 of the drawings. The scoring just referred to is-at the'sam'e level on the completed box structure as will be the turned edges of the other of the flaps 40, 41, 41,
' when the top or lid is turned down upon the box structure, so as to infold the upper edge thereof. v
In the modified form of the box structure provided with a shown at Fi s.'=11 and 12 of the drawings, theuppere ge of.the panels 26, 27 and 28 are'formed level with the' scoring constitutingathis hinge, as above described. In this form of the construction the inner wall shown in dotted lines at Fig. 11 constitutes theguides for the top or cover.
Injthe form of box illustrated at Fig. 1 of thedrawings, the uppered 'e down to the dotted line therein shown farms the guide for the cover, while extensions 45, *form lateral inward extensions or.covering edges for thebox structure, sealing the many ply formation of the side walls. In the completed box structure, if desired, the extensions45, 45" may be held in their butted relation by any suitablefo'rm of construction;
In the modified form shown at Figs. 11 and 12, I have changed the constructlon of the top or lid by forming in the blank the corner sections 46, 46. These sections I fold inward on the line 47, 47 then turn the folded sections against the extensions 41, 41 and secure them in this position by driving metal sta les 48, 48 through the assembled layers.
' aving thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A folding box com rising a plurality of box-like receptacles a apted to fit the one within the other to form the inner and outer walls, of the said box, constructed each from a continuous flat 3 read sheet ada ted to be folded in receptac e form with t e lapped portions of the inner receptacle disposed on the exterior of the side sections thereof, and the lap'ed portions of the'outer receptacle dis ose on the bottom section thereof, the suit outer receptaclebein brovided with flatextensions to over-fokl t e up er edge of the inner receptacle; and ,means or securing the said -l'apped. portions'in folded position. 2. A folding box, com rising an inner box-like receptacle forme from a continuous sheet folded to form inner bottom and side flushsurfaces; an outer box-like receptacle formedfrom a continuous sheet folded to form outer side flush surfaces and havin a bottom consisting of a' plurality of lappec extensions of the sides ofsaid outer rece tacle; and securing means for holdin t e said receptacles together to form a single structure having flush inner and outer surfaces.
