Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, STEPHEN G. IVILsoN, a citizen of the United States, ,residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Broom Attachment, of which the followingl is a specification.

The purpose of my invention is to provide a simple and durable broom guard which can be readily adjusted and which can be held in place by spring tension.

A. further purpose of my invention is to provide for adjustment of the tension of the guard according to the character of the sweeping or scrubbing for which it is intended.

A .further purpose of my invention is to provide a broom guard With broom engaging members having spring parts upon 0pposite edges of the broom, which parts are united by a flexible connection upon the center of each flat side of the broom, and to use a tension device to take up the flexible connection.

It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.

For the purpose of illustrating my invention, I have shown the form thereof at pres ent preferred by me, since this embodiment best illustrates the principle of the invention and gives satisfactory and reliable results in practice, although it is to be under stood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown.

`Figure l represents a broom in side elevation illustrating one form of my invention. Fig. 2 represents, in perspective, one of the edge members applied in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents, in perspective, a side connection of which I make use. Fig. 4 represents, in perspective, the take-up by which I tighten flexible connections.

tect the splints below the usual banding 3 and to be adjusted to varying degrees of rigidity according to the particular purpose for which the broom is, at the time, being used. It comprises edge members of like construction and fastening means upon opposite sides of the broom.

The portion of the guard coming in contact with the splints at the edge of the broom is best seen in Fig. 2 where the loop et is shown united by coils 5 with side bars which extend, when in position, substantially parallel to the binding or banding 3. l

The side bars are coiled at 7 and are extended at 8 nearly parallel with the handle of the broom to terminal eyes 9.

A loop l0, not shown in Fig. 2, is pivoted in the eyes formed by the coils 5 so as to hang in the position shown by Fig. l. Under the strain of the splints in use this loop will work up to positions such as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l while still supporting the splints.

It Will be seen that the loops 4 and l0 do not press perpendicularly against the broom avoiding direct transverse strain of these loops upon the splints. This is then true of the loops 4 and l0 whether they are spring pressed against the splints or whether they rest against the splints by their weight and take strain from the splints during the operation of the broom.

The loop 4 fits against the edge of the broom body disposing the several meeting parts of the structure shown in Fig. 2 upon opposite sides of the broom. Upon the same side of the broom there are, therefore, a single extension 8 and an eye 9 from each of two bars 6 located upon that side of the broom. These eyes 9 engage the eyes 11 of a hook l2 having corrugated armsl, normally lying in the position shown in Fig. 3, or when stretched laterally as seen in Fig. 1, tending to bring the eyes 9 there shown together.

The hook 12 engages with any one of the bonds or bands 3, by means of nose 14, which is united to the body of the hook by coils forming eyes 15. These coils perform the double function of giving resilience to the structure shown in Fig. 3 against strain longitudinally of the Wires as there shown and against lateral parting of the arms 13, and

tied or` otherwise secured therein, and extending down through eyes 7 to a tying point 17 between the side members.

The cord 16 may be initially tightened to any desirable degree and is further capable of adjustment by passing each side thereof through openings 1S of a keeper 19 whose tabs 2O afford ears by which it may be drawn in either direction with consequent tightening or loosening of the cord. l

It will be evident that the side members engagewith the broom splints at loops 4t without excessive injury thereto and are held in contact with said splints both by the direct strain of the cord 16 and by the inward tension of the arms 13 acting upon the bell cranks formed by the parts 8 and 6 respelctively, whose pivotal points are in the co1 s.

It will be further evident that the movement of the keeper 19 vertically on the cord ,will draw the portions 21,' 2Q of the cord 1G together o'r release them, as the case may be, with consequent shortening or lengthening of the distances between coils 7 upon the same side ofthe broom.

The construction shown in Fig. 1 may be duplicated upon the opposite side thereof and the side portions of my guard will thus be drawn resiliently against the splints with the loops 4t pressed against said splints at an angle, and with the pending loops 10 moving freely about the eyes 5 with consequent relief or pressureY and support upon the splints at thisV point, following them up into the position shown when the broom is not in use.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. ln a device of the character described,

edge ei'ig'aging devices, bell crank extensions extending from said edge engaging devices and terminating in eyes, coils intermediate the arms of said bell crank extensions, a resilient connection between the terminal eyes of different bell crank extensions, a cord connecting said resilient connection and said coils, and a keeper movable on said cord to adjust the tension thereof.

2. ln a device of the character described,

edge engaging devices, arms engaging therewith terminating in eyes and having coils intermediate their ends, bifurcated resilient devices connected at the extremities of their bifurcations to said eyes, eyes intermediate the length of the bifurcated parts of said resilient devices, and a flexible connection uniting said coils and resilient devices.

3. In a device of the character described, edge engaging devices, arms connected therewith, arms ait an angle with said first arms terminating in eyes, coils intermediate the arms at an angle, a hook having resilient arms joining said terminal eyes, a flexible connection between the intermediate coils and said hook, and a keeper movable on said flexible connection for adjustment thereof.
