IOHlfl' F. OCONNOR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR. BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO WILLIAM H. MINER. OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ANTIFRICTION CENTER-BEARING FOR RAILNAY-CARS.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, JOHN F. OCoxuon, a citizen of the United-States, residing in (lhicage, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Antifriction Center-Bearings for Railway-Cars, of which the Following is a specification.
My invention relates to anti-friction center bearings for railway cars. Its objectv is to provide an anti-friction center bearing for railway cars or other vehicles of a simple, strong, efficient and durable construction in which the anti-friction conical rollers between the upper and lower center plates may be kept in their proper radial relationfor efficient operation, and in which at the same time as large a number of rollers as possible may be employed in order that the heavy load upon the center plate may be distributed among as large a number of v rollers as possible.
My invention consists in the means I cmploy and herein shown and described for practically accomplishing this result. That is to say,'it consists in connection with the upper and lower centerplates having annul'ar conical treads and an annular train of closely adjacent conical rollers between the Cit upper and lower bearing plates and a roller alining arm or arms extending radially between adjacent rollers of the train at one or more points to keep the rollers from skewing, and to cause them to preserve their radial arrangement, and means for keeping said radial roller alining arm or arms in its proper radial position as it travels with the rollers around the annular tread of the center plates. My invention also consists in the novel construction of parts and devices, and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described. In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of an anti-friction cen ter bearing embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view partly in horizontal section. Fig. 3 is a detail end fview of the roller alining radial arm witht its integral ring for keepin it in radial ositr as it travels around theannular tre d of the center plates. I
In the drawing, A renres the bodv Specification of Letters latcnt. Patented B131. 29 19141 Application filed May 4. 1907.
Serial No. 371.785.
' bolster of a railway car or other vehicle, and B the upper center plate secured thereto.
C is the truck bolster, l) the lower center plate secured thereto and E is a king bolt.
F F I are a series or train of closely adjacent conical rollers arranged radially between the annular conical tread oi the upper center plate I3 and the annular conical tread a? of the lower center plate I). The upper center plate B has an annular huh I) surrounding the king bolt E and an annular rim and the lower center plate I) has an annular hub (l whichsurrounds the annular hub b of the upper center plate B and the lower center plate I) hasan annular rim (P which fits within the annular rim 7) of the upper center plate B. The annular hubs and rims of the center plate thus telescope with each other.
G is my traveling roller alining radial arm interposed at one or more points in the circumference of the annular train of rollers I the same bein provided with an annular ring G surrounding the annular hub (1 0f the lower center plate D to keep the radial arm in its radial position as it travels around with the train-of rollers. This radial roller alining arm G is preferably furnished with curved sides g conforming to the periphery of adjacent rollers F F between which it is inter osed and it is also made tapering and wi or at its outer end than at its inner end. If preferred, two roller alining radial arms G G may be em ployed at diametrically opposite oints of the train of rollers F F, but ordinarily I find one radial arm sutticicnt to keep the train of adjacent rollers F F each in proper radial position and to prevent their becoming askew as they travel. around the annular tread. In case two diametrically opposite roller alining arms G G are employed as indicated in the drawing, theyare both preferably made intcgral'with the ring G by which they are held in radial relation.
are employed, each and every one of the rollers of the complete circular train contacts direct-l with at least one adjacent roller. An all of the rollers exceptin" those which contact with the arm or arms of course directly contact with two adjacent rollers, whether one or two alining arms I are employed. By train of rollers, I wish Whether one or two roller alining arms G rol extending around E aving notches L at its lower end, adapted o be clenched or upset against the shoulder 3 of the hub of the lower bearing plate It) to loot: the twobearing plates together with the interposed rollers and the roller alining arm l thinr u and preferably notched rim 0'" two adjacent; rollers of the circular train, said roller alining radial arm having an integi'al ring fitting the annular hub of one of said center plates to keep it in its proper radial position as it travels around with the rollers, substantially as Specified.
3. In an anti-friction center bearing forgail- Way cars, the combination with upper and lower center plates having annular conical treads and interfitt-ing annular hubs, of circular train of radially arranged conical rollers between said u pper and lower plates,-
and a roller alining radialarm interposed between two adjacent rollers of said circular trainto keep the rollers from becoming asl-zew and to maintain them each in proper radial arrangement, said rollers filling and covering said annular tread, and all said rollers, excepting those having radial arui engagement, directly contacting each with two adjacent rollers of the circular train,
G. The upper bearing plate B is preferably provided with an upper shell B in a separate piece from the conical tread carrying portion of said upper bearing plate.
I claim l. in an anti-friction center bearing for railway cars, the combination with upper and lower center plates having annular consaid roller alining radial arm having an in" tegral ring fitting the annular hub of one of said center plates to keep it in its proper radial. position as it travels around with. the
rollers, said center plates having also inter-- fitting annular rims, substantially as speciicul treads and interlitting annular hubs, of i a. circular train otfratlially arranged conical rollers between said upper and lower plates, and a. roller aiming radial arm interposed between two ad acent rollers of said circular train to keep the rollers from becoming askew and to maintain them each in proper t-ra1n to keep the rollers from becoming radial urrauiqeuient, said rollers filling and covering sairi an-nular tread and all said rollers,v excepting those having radial arni engagement, directly contacting each with two adjacent rollers of the circular train, sub
; engagement, directly contacting each with stantially as specified.
2. 111 an anti-friction center bearingflfor railway cars, the combination with "upper and lower center plates having annular conical treads and lntcrtitting annular hubs, of
' a circular train-of radially arranged conical rollers between said upper and lower plates, and, a roller alining radial arm interposed between two adjacent rollers of said circular train to keep the rollers from becoming aslzew and to maintain them each in proper radial arrangement, said rollers filling and covering said annular tread, and all said rollers, excepting those having radial arm engagement, directly contacting each with 4. In an anti-friction center bearing for railway cars, the combination with upper and lower center plates having annular conical treads and interfitting annular hubs, of a circular train of radially arranged conical rollers between said upper and lower plates,
and a roller alining radial arm interposed between two achacent rollers of said circular askew and to maintain them each in proper radial arrangement. said rollers filling and covering said annular tread, and all said rollers, excepting those having radial two adjacentrollers of the circular train, said roller alinin'g radial arm having an in tegral ring fitting the annular hub of one of said center plates to keep it in its proper radial position as ittravels around with the "rollers, said roller alining radial arm being tapering and wider at its outer end and hav ing curved faces contacting with the adjacent rollers, substantially as specified.
