an oblong casing A of the relative length and lwidth shown in Fig. 1 and of comparatively small` depth as shown in Fig. 2. Journaled wit-hin the casing on individual axes are the three pairs of wheels 1--1, 2 2 and 3 3. The axes of each of lthese wheels pass through the outer walls of the casing and may terminate either in a flat thumb portion or a round milled head to permit each of 'the' wheels to be turned individually on itsaxis. Each of the wheels 1 and 1 is provided with twenty ratchet teeth, `while on the inner side of each of the wheels S and- 3. is secured a small ratchet wheel, such as 4 and 4. These ratchet wheels are concentric with the larger wheels.- Onthe periphery of each of the wheels 3 and 3 are single teeth 5 and 5 respectively, that are adapted to engage the teeth of the centr-al wheels 2 and 2', to turn the l latter. The central wheels 2 and 2 have a diameter half of that ofthe larger wheels, the latter being of equal diameter. videdv with ten ratchet teeth, and they have valso the' siigle'teeth 6 and 6 adapted to engage theteeth on the -wheelsl and 1 to turn the latter. In order to keep the wheels from being turned too far or from ret-meting, I have provided the spring detente 7, 8 and 9.
The outer edges of the wheels 1 and 1 are divided into twenty` eq'ual sections, whiclrare numbered consecutively from Otto 19 as shown in Fig. 1. The'central wh 'slanedh vided into ten sections and einernumbered consecutively from 0 to 9. The'wlieels 3 and -3 are divided into .twenty sections andc'each section has a figure greater by five than the section before it. Thus the irst section is numbered 0.0, the second 5, the third 10, the
fourth 15, & c., up to 95. On each side of the casing I have left the o enings 10 and 11,
The central wheels areIe'ach pro- 80 through whichthe num ers on thc wheels lplay be seen when they are turned to reg ster therewith, the opening 10 showing the amount in dollars and the opening 11 in cents. The: oppositeside of the casing is provided with similar openings, also indicating dollars andcents.
In order to manipulate the register Ihave provided the plungers 12, 13, 14 and 15. The plunger 12 is arranged to act-nate a lever 16. This lever is 'shown in detail in Fig. 5. It consists-.of two paits,\tlie upper )art 16a providedl with laterally `extending ll a bifureatedlower part 16, which has hollow mentbers arranged to receive thearins ugs 16", and

16d of the part 162. the tivo 'i arts being held together by a spring. The lever is pivoted at 17 and is provided .vitli a pin 18 arranged to enter the slot-19 in a. latereT47 extending lower arm or" the plunger 13. ioth of the plungers'are held normally in a raised position by means of coiled springs 20. When the plunger l2 is depressed the lever 16- engages a tooth et the ratchet e and et throughl l0 the medium of the lugs 16h and turns the Wheel one tooth. Un the release of the plunger the lever 1G is returned to its normal position means of the spring 20 of the y plunger lo, the lugs 1Gb riding over the teeth l5 on the ratchets, this construction being permitted hy the telescopic vfeature described. linien the plunger 13 is depressed the lever 16 is turned 90 or live teeth and is again restored to normal by means ot the 23 spring QO'When the plunger is released. rllie plunger let operates directly on the teeth of the ratchet .members 2 and 2', tui-ning the Wheels one tooth at each depression ot' the plunger. So also With the plunger l5 which turns the Wheels l and l" one step forward at each depression. The plungers le and l5 both consist ot' forked resilient rods, the ends of Which are arranged to hear upon the teeth of the pair of Wheels on each 30 side of the rod, so that when the iod is depressed the corresponding wheels on side of the device are turned.
The device described above provides means for registering the amount expended as Well as for registering the amount remaining of a given sum. rllie side registering the amount paid out l designate the out side, While that recording the balance left i designate the balance side. ln order to clearly cach 40 explain the operation l Will designate the let us say $180.30, which l may have to spend and, oli/'Which l Wish to keep a record Wit-h'- out going to the trouble of. remembering by memory, or melting a "Written record. Before eizpending any of the money l set the Wheels on the out l side so that they all register ciphers to show that nothing has been spent. l then the Wheel et so that the number 30 appears in the balance-cent-eyelet, the Wheel 2 se that e cipher appears in the open-l ing and the Tfvheel l so that the ligure i8 in the t balance-dellar-eyelet, showing that L' he dhd39. mechanism ie eeeeae snow ready for Work. Let us assume that l turned five divisions corresponding to theorie pressure on the quarter rod. Thus eight divisions Will have been passed which Will bring the figure l() in front of the out- .cent-eyelet. At the same time the Wheel et will behturned in the opposite direction rel atively', that is, while the first Wheel'vvill be turned from right to left, the latter Wheel will be turned from left to right, viewed of course from opposite sides. other wheels Will be turned in. the reverse direction corresponding amounts, so that when viewed from the balance side the amount now registered will be iltt, this amount being automatically substracted from the original amount without any error being possible. @liiviously any-additional amount may be added on one side and suhtiacted on the' other and a record ot the same kept by the register.
l may attach to the outside of the apparatus the dials B and The former may he set to record the date and the latter the amount of money originally possessed. Thus i may have a complete'reeord of the time, the amount oi money originally possessed, the amount expended and the balance left.
rlhis device may be carried in the pocket, and owing to the different disposition and size of the plungers, one may readily lmotv by feeling what plunger is beingdepressed and the device can thus be operated Without taking it out to look at it. 'Gf course the characters indicatinfr the amounts might he in other units than dollars and cents, thereby making it applicable to the monetary system of any country. y
l am aware that other forms of the device, based upon the saine general idea might be 'made7 but l consider as my own and desire to claim, all such inodiiicationii fairly fall Within the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim" l. l'n a pocket cash register, a casing, a pair of dials mounted for rotation at each end of said casing, a pair of'center ratchet wheels mounted between said end dialsteeth on one pair of said end dials adapted to engage the teeth on said center ratchetn, teeth on said center ratchets adapted to engage the teeth on the other pair of end dials, separate plungers for operating each pair oi said dials, and eseriee of indicating marks carried by said dials to indicate the amount expended and helene-e.
2. ln pocket cash register, a casing, a pair of dials mounted for rotation at each .soV Similarly the llo " rend'of said casing, a plunger at each end of said casing arranged to operate its individual' pair of dials, a pair of center ratchet wheels mounted between said end dials, av
plunger for operating said Center ratchet Wheels and an. auxiliary plunger arranged to give one pair of said end dials a greater rotation than the other plunger for operating the same.
3. In .a pocket cash register, a casing provided with a pair ofopenings on each gde thereof, a pair of end dials mounted for rotation at each end of said casing, a pair' of center ratchet Wheels mounted for rotation,
each of said dials and said ratchet Wheels being provided with' indicating marks7 adapted to he brought into registration with said openings, the indicating marks on one .vided with a pair of o enings on both sides thereoia air of d ia s mounted for rotation at eacrend of said Casin a. pair of center ratchet Wheels mounted etWeen said end dials and provided with teeth arranged to engage the teeth on said end dials, a series of indicating marks carried on the outer sides of each pair of dials and the ratchet Wheels, the marks of one of the dials and one of the -ratchet Wheeis being arranged to appear before one of said openings onone side of the casing to indicate the amount eX- pended in dollars, vthe marks on the other end v'dialbeing arranged to appear before 'the other opening on the same side of the casing to indicate lthe amount expended in cents and the marks on the dials on the opposite side being arranged to appear before the respective openings to indicate the balance in dollars and cents respectively.
5. In 'a pocket cash register, a casing, a pair of dials mounted for rotation at each end of said casing, each of said dials beingV provided with teeth, a separate spring actufated' forked plunger arranged to o eratev each pair oi said dials, one pair o' said dials Being also provided with'l 'an auxiliary' spring actuated slotted plungerlarranged to turn its pair or' dials afgreaterdistanoe than the first named plunger. r
