To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that. l. SinnoN l). Online, a citizen ot' the United States. residing at Kensington. in the county ot Smith, State ot' Kansas. have invented certain new and usel'ul improvementsl in llnvelops; and l do herebyY declare the 'lollowing to be a tull. clear` and exact description ol the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to malte and use the saine.
This invention relates to envelops of the class wherein provision is inade t'or rein- `toreing the sealing portion.y to prevent' traeture during transportation through the mails, and has 't'or its object to improve the eonstruetion and increase the etiiciency and utility ot devices ot' this character.
With thisl and other' objects in view, tho invention consists in eertain novel features ot construct ion as hereafter shown and described and then speeitieally pointed out in the claim. and in the drawings illustrative ot' the. preferred embodiment ot' the invention, Figure l is a view of the envelop ready to receive its contents. The improvement comprises an attaolr nient which mayv be applied to any envelop having a sealing flap, and t'or the purpose ot' illustration is shown applied to a eonven tional envelop comprisinga front portion 10, end flaps 11n-l., back flap 13, and with a, closure flap let. The back llap 13 provided with a longitudinally extending; slit t5a and the, closure Hap 14 1s provided with a. lsimilar slit 16, the formation of the slits in the envelop being the only change made therein.
A strip 17 forms a part of the improvement and is provided with adhesive material ndieated at 18 upon one face. The strip is inserted through the slit 15 into the interior ot the envelop andextended to a point near the t'oldiney line. It) between the front portion 10 and the elosure flap 14, and the remainder of the strip extending over the baci: l'lap 13, as lshown in Figs. 1 and When the strip is inserted as shown in Figs. 1 and 3 the adhesivo material whieh bears lazagainst the inlterior ot' the end flaps and adhere thereto. In this condition the envelops are. furnished to the trade, and after the contents have been inserted the elosure flap 1l is closed in the usual manner and sealed by moistening the adhesive material indicated at 21. 'lhe exposed portion of the strip il is then moistened' and folded along` the line indicated by the dotted line 1?() and inserted through the slot 1o and forced inwardly over the interior portion ot the strip into the position shown in Fig. 2 and pr sure applied to Cause the two portions ot' the strip t'o adhere and also to cause the stri p to adhere to the overlapping portions ot the back tlap and closure tlaps. By this means the envelop is etiee'tually reinforced and strengthened at the weakest point, and the point. which is most liable to be fractured during transit through the mails.
