TICKET FOLDING AND CUTTING MACHINE.
"atented Mar. 2.2, 1910.
Application filed March 22, 1909. Serial No. 485,126.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FELIX Mancns, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ticket Folding and Cutting Machines, of, which the following is a specification.
This invention consists of a comparatively simple but extremely eliicient machine designed particularly for cutting and folding tickets preparatory to putting the same in book form.
The invention resides particularly in the peculiar feeding, cutting, and folding devices by which asheet of paper of suitable size, printed or unprinted as desired, may be fed into themachine and cat into a number of strips, each strip being folded and fed to a'box or hopper located at a predetermined part of the machine.
For a full understanding of theinvention,
reference is to be had to the following detail description and to the accompanying drawings, in whlch v Figure l -1 s a vertical longitudinal section .of a machine embodying the invention; Fig.
2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view showing more clearly the arrangement of the adjusting device cooperating with the folding roll-s; Fig. 1 is asectional view of the same; Fig. a side elevation of the gear box; Fig. (i is a section of the same, and Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a ticket out and folded as .when operated upon by the present machine.
Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the drawin 's, similar parts are referred to by like re erence characters.
In carrying out the invention it is contemplated that the various parts of the machine be mounted upon a suitable frame 1, an end portion of which extends upwardly as shown at 2. At one end of the frame 1 is located a feeding table 3 above which are arranged on shafts 4c and 5 the 'tensionrolls 6 and 7 respectively. The shafts 4 and 5 are connecte together by yoke plates 8, said l l l I shall be folded and mounted upon cutter shafts 12. The .-hcct of paper is cut into a number of rips as it passes between the cutters l1 eral strips are fed to folding rolls l3 and l-l arranged in the same horizontal plane. small rubber feeding disks 15 being arranged above the rolls 13 and carried by vertical standards 16 mounted in suitable bra kets 17 secured to the frame work of the machine. A plurality of adjusting plates in arc mounted on a transverse portion of the frame of the machine and folding roll 14, said adjusting plates having a plurality of upwardly curving guide tingers 19 extending therefrom toward the feeding disks 15 and also having longer and downwardly curvedlingers 20 extendii partially into the space betwccn the upper portions of the feed rolls 13 and 1-1. (crtain of the strips of paper cut by means of the rotary cutters 11 are stopped in their forward movement by means of thcadjusting plates 18, the foremost edges of said strips passing between the fingers l!) amt-LO. Just as the strips aforesaid are stopped by the plates 18, andwhile arranged above the folding rolls 13 and 11. a plurality of folding devices consisting of fingers 21 supported by arms :32 on a rock shaft 22) move downwardly and by engaging with the upper sides of said strips, the latter being shown at 2%, these strips are partly folded and caused to )ass downwardly between the contacting folding rolls 13 and 14 from whence they are dropped into a hopper or box 2.). Those strips which drop. into the boxes 27 are retained by means of pressure lingers '36 and these scv-' As a ticket or strip of paper y when folded drops into the box 25, thellngers 26 are upraised by reason of actuation of the arms 27,.but as soon as the ticket is in the box, the arms 27 are so tuned in opt-rati-on as to move downwardly and cause the fingers 26 to engage and retain the ticket justdropped by slight pressure in the manner shown in Fig. 1.
, It is contemplated that a certain number of the strips, four in-the present instance, into which the sheetis cut by the cutters '11, drop into boxes 25. Other strips or tickets after being cut are fed over the rolls 13 runway 29 by means of suitable feed rolls 10 and feeding disks 15. Those tickets which and l t upwardlv on a are not folded by the folding rolls 13 and 14 but pass onwardly between i are finally folded by eoacting folding rolls'13 and 14 located on the elevated portlon 2' of the frame 1. Cooperating with the rolls 13 and l4 are the foldingfingers 21 similar to the fingers 21 and which are carried by arms 22 operated in any suitable manner from a moving partof' the machine.-
Adjusting plates 18 of course cooperate witli the rolls 13 and 14;
mounted a cam 31 said .It. will be observed that. on a shaft 30 is cam' cooperating with a roller contact on the extremity of a rocker arm 32. The arm 32 istoimected with' the shaft 23 and rotation of the cam 31 moves ated by the arm 3211p and down imparting corresptmdmg movement of course to the foldmg fingers 21 carried by the shaft. 23. Onthe shaft is also mounted a gear 33 for eecentrio connection at 34 with a rod 35 connected with an arm 36 on the shaft 28. The arms 27 carrying the pressure fingers 26 are operback-and forth movement of the arm 36 which actuates the shaft 28, and said arm is also connected by a rod 35 with a snmlararm 36" having arms 2'? supplied with pressure fingers 26. The fingers 26 perform the same function with respect to tickets dropped into the hopper 25 as'descrihed with'reference to the" arts 25'and 26. c
It'will'be observed that the outermost tension rolls 6 to which the paper is fed prearatory to being cut into strips or tickets adapted for slight upward movement.
The purpose above the table 3'tl1efingerS .the table to facilitate accurate placement of the sheet fed to the sheet is in position,
' plane of this is t'o enable the paper the machine to be placed with v with stop lingers 37 adapted to be projected above'the of the table 3 through openings therelVhen the rolls I are slightly elevated 37 projectahove as it is full to its lower inner edge in contact machine.
however, the rolls "6 are dropped into conta'ct with the rolls '6 and the fingers 37 simultaneously lower so as not to project, above the table and in order to permit the rolls 6 and 7 to pass the sheet onward to the feeding rolls 10. The means forelevating the rolls 6 as above described and operating thefingers 37 comprises the devices now to be described. It may be observed at this time that the various shafts carrying the rolls above mentioned are intergeared in any suitable .way and timed for operation ina proper manner of the parts the rolls 10' and As soon as. the
on the shaft'28 on the ele'-[ vated portion 2 of the frame, said shaft 28 sion rolls and pass hopper for retaining the supported thereby. I The fingers upwardly from from a shaft-39. Also from the shaft 39 is a long, arm 40 having a roller at its outer end adapted to be engaged by a cam 41 on the shaft 42. 'lhe-intermittent' up and down movement of the arm 40 imparts corresponding movement to the fingers 37 man obvious manner projecting orwithdrawing said fin gers from coaction with the-sheetof paper on the feeding table 3. Spacedbea-rings 43 guided. by pins 44 or like members, are con-' nected at their upper ends to the yoke plates 8. The members 43 are moved up and down by a cam the upper tension roll (3 is slightly elevated at intervals of time to permit the sheet tgbe fed below said roll'preparatory to befed onward in the machine. The gear 45'i's fight with the shaft 42 and series ofaecesse's therein. A plurality of spring pressed pins 49 are carried by the member 46 and. are adapted to'be projected at predetermined intervals into the geareo by the stationary cam member-b0 interlocking the gears. p
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a machine of the class described, the
combination with aframe, of a feed table,
tension rolls arran ed above said feedtable,
fingers, a rock, shaftcarrying said arms,
means for moving the arms up and downto impart similar movement to the folding fin rolls, and.
gers, a hopper beneath the foldin pressure fingers movable into an out ofxthe folded strip dropped thereinto. I
