Letters Patent No. 95,241, dated September 28,1869.
IMPROVEMENT 1N snnn-P ANreRs.
The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
I, J OHN S. LEWIS, of Elkader, in the county of Clayton, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Seed-Planters.
Nature and Objects of the Invention.
: My invention relates to that class of seed-plant ersadaptedfor sowing smali seed, such 'as clover,
broadcast.
vThe firstpart of myinvention consists in making -seed-planters of the class named in the form of a long tubular box, provided with suitable means for the introduction and discharge of the seed, adapted .forat tachment to the shoulders (of aman, being supported in a horizontal position, and operating to discharge the seed bybeing simply swung or jerked back and forth during the operation.
The second partof my invention consists in forming the seed-box ofsuch seed-planter, and providing it with proper dividing partitions, by uniting, simi larlyjto joints of stove-pipe, a number of short taper ing tubes, having their smaller ends only closed, ex-
cept the last one, with its large end outward, which is closed at both ends, the manufacture of such box being thus rendered simple and easy.
l I Description of Drawings. In the accompanying drawihgs---, Figure 1 represents a'perspective view of a seedplanter constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2, a longitudinal section of a portion of the Figure 3, a transverse section on the same scale ,as fig. 2, taken at z z, fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrow.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several figures.
General Description.
of the -planter. l

in onepait with them, or applied previously to their union. The other end of the box is applied to the open end of the section, at that extremity, before or after such section is applied. These sections are united by the insertion of thesmaller end of one into the larger of the other, and securing them in any suitable manner.
The entire apparatus, with the'exception of the supporting-straps and handles, which may be of leather, is preferably made of tin or other suit-able sheetemetal.
The measurements of the seed-box are preferably about as follows: v
Length, sixteen feet; thickness or diameter, three inches; diameter of perforations B B one inch length of sections, one foot. The length of the straps E F, of course, vary with the height, 850., of the person using it, and may be made adjustable in length, by any suitable means, if preferred. l
The size of the perforations b, in the slide og-wm vary according to the kind of seed tobe sown, and the number in the slide will be varied according as thicker V or thinner sowing is desired.
Different sets of such slides, with the perforations graduated, both as regards size and number, may accompany each apparatus.
The apertures B and their accessories may be' dispensed with, and the seed introduced through B, by withdrawing the slides G, and the number of said apertures B and their covering-slides may be increased if desired; or, the perforations l), of a fixed gauge, may i be made in the bottom of the box A, and the apertures B, with their slides G. employed alone.
Any desired variation of the precise proportions and shape of the apparatus named and represented, less than would involve change of principle, may also obviously be made.
Operation.
The compartments of the box A being filled with side by means of the handlesll, the planting is effected. It is apparent that by this means a field may be sown with great rapidity and regularity.
Claims.
I claim as new- 1.- A seeding-machine, consisting of along tubular box, A, provided with apertures B B, (either orboth,) covered by slides O G, and with discharge-perforations 1), adapted for suspension from the person of the oper: ator by straps E, and provided with handles F, by which to vibrate it, substantially as herein set forth.
2. In combination with the seed-box A, constructed otherwise, and adapted to operate substantially as herein set forth, the partitions D, as and for the purpose explained.
3. The partitioned seed-box A D, composed of tapering sections ac, as represented and described, for
the purpose set forth.
To the above specification of my improved seed- I planter, I have signed my hand, this 29th day of June,
Witnesses:
ELIJAH ODELL, JAMES O. CRosBY.
