BOX-OPENER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JosnrH TREMBLAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. J ohnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Box-Openers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention contemplates the construction of a nail puller, especially for opening boxes, provided with a removable claw mem' her and a hammer adapted to be reciprocated against the claw member for quickly removing nails.

One of the objects of the invention is the production of a box opener capable of being used for pulling nails from boxes or other articles, or capable of being used for an ice pick, and provided with a removable tool set at an oblique angle to the shank of the device.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim, and in the drawings, in which,

In the drawings 1 denotes the shank of my improved tool, and is formed with an offset, 2, which is longitudinally pierced by an aperture, 3, which extends from the lower end of the shank to the upper end of the offset and at an oblique angle to the shank. The shank head, 2, is formed integral with the shank 1 and is adapted to receive the stem, 3, of a clawed tool, 4, which may be secured thereto by screw threads, or similar means.

When the clawed tool, 4, is inserted in the offset, 2, said tool will occupy an angular position with respect to the shank, 1, and said ofiset is flattened at its upper portion to receive the blows of a hammer, 5, and said hammer is formed with a longitudinal bore, 6, and an enlarged head, 7 and is slidably mounted on the shank, 1, so that the same may be reciprocated back and forth on Specification of Letters Patent.

The shank, I, is preferably formed of suitable length to permit of considerable movement of the hammer, 5, and is reduced at its upper end to receive a handle, 8. The handle, 8, is locked to the reduced end of the shank, 1, by means of a washer, 9, arranged to engage the shoulder, 10, of the shank, 1, and a second washer, 11, arranged to engage the upper end of the handle, 8, and be locked thereagainst by arivet head, 12, formed on the shank, 1. The hammer, 5, is limited in its upward movement by the shoulder, 10, and in its downward movement by the offset, 2, and the outer side of said offset occupies an angular position with respect to the shank, 1. The clawed tool, 4, is adapted for pulling nails from boxes or other articles and may be forced inwardly on the wood of a box by the reciprocation of the hammer, 5, on the shank, 1, and using the shank as a lever with the offset as the fulcrum.

Vhen it is desired to remove the clawed tool, 4, all that is necessary is to force the stem outwardly from the aperture, 3, by turning the clawed tool, 4, in the offset 2, or inserting an instrument through the upper end'of the aperture, 3, and exerting pressure against the stem of the clawed tool.

lVhen the clawed tool is removed from the shank an ice pick, 13, or a similar tool formed with a chisel end, may be inserted in the aperture, 3.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention as defined in the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
