ATTACHMENT FOR TELEPHONE-MOUTHPIECES.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BERT C. MAXWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, of 0 io, have invented a certain new and usefu Improvement in Attachments for 'lelephione-Iilouthpieces, of which the following is a full clear, and exact description.

It is generally recognized that disease germs are. often deposited in telephone mouth pieces by persons using the telephone; and that subsequently users of said mouth pieces may become infected thereby because as they talk into the mouth pieces the dirt and germs are blown out into their faces, and they inhale them. This has led to the invention of various devices to be attached to the permanent telephone mouth pieces for the purpose of preventing these injurious results. Generally speaking, these devices have included a germicide holder, and have been constructed on the theory that in order tobe efi'ective they must trap the germs in the mouth piece and kill them by the germicide.

The invention consists in the combination with the permanent frusto conical mouth piece of a telephone. transmitter, of a supplemental frusto-conical mouth piece of smaller diameter-secured therein and having its outer edges rolled backward over the edges of the permanent mouth piece but out of contact therewith, whereby, there is formed, between the supplemental mouth piece and the permanent mouth ,piece, an nular air passageways hich are deflected backward by the curved edge of the at.- tachment.

Referring to the parts by letters, A represents the permanent frusto-conical mouth piece of a telephone transmitter; and B represents, a trusto-conieal attachment having an outwardly and 'rearwardly curved margin or edge [)1 This attachment is of smaller diameter than the mouth-piece A, and is to be secured ticn that the twov are not in contact, and the curved edge of the attachment rolls over the edge of the mouth piece A. As shown, these small spring clasps C are employed for the purpose, When the attachment is secured in the permanent mouth piece in theposition shown, there is be tween them an annular air passage-way which curves 'rearwardly around the for- .ward edge of the permanent mouth piece.

When a. person talks into mouth piece equipped with this attachment, air currents are produced, which flow in the paths indicated by the arrows,-the out going cur rents, which have perhaps gathered uo' germs and dust from the permanent Inout piece, flowing through the way and being deflected backward by the rolled over edge of the attachment wherefore they are not discharged into the face of the user.

It Will. be noted thatthe edge b of the attachment outside of the mouth iece is torming an annular trou 'h b, in which the dust is partially trapped. The attachment may be removed and cleaned from time to time.

In the best constructions, the attachment is made With a detachable center 6", which is preferably made of paper. It is formed so as to fit friction tight in the other part,
