Be it known that I, EDWIN WALKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to cigar cutters of that class wherein a depressible cutter head is employed in connection with a suitable cutting mechanism.

The object of this invention is to combine a name or display plate with a cutter in such a way that itis practically impossible for the user or retail cigar dealer to transfer the plate from the vcutter of one manufacturer to the device of another manufacturer. Cigar cutters are employed largely by cigar manufacturers as advertising mediums for particular brands of goods, and it is not unusual to employ attractive and compara tively expensive name plates on the cutters. My invention overcomes one source of complaint made by manufacturers that their cutters or plates have been used by rivals in an unwarranted manner, because the name plate of my new cutter forms an inseparable part of the cutter mechanism. Instead of using a stationary name plate on a fixed part of the cutter, I employ a mov able plate which is actuated simultaneously with a moving part of the cutter, the result of which is to attract the attention of the customer to a particular brand of cigars by bringing the name plate of said brand prominently to his attention.

Broadly stated, the invention consists of a cigar cutter provided with a movable name plate which is actuated by the movement of a cutter head.

More specifically stated, the invention consists of a name plate forming one of a pair of arms for supporting a depressible cutter head.

Furthermore, the invention consists of a frame pivoted to a support and provided with an arm which is pivoted toa cutter head, said frame being adapted to receive advertising matter such as an insertible name plate, a card, label, or other appropriate device.

In the drawings, Figure l is side elevation of a cigar cutter embodying my invention, the cutting mechanism being shown in a normal raised position by full linesand in a depressed position by dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation on the line 2-2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the cutter with the parts in the raised position of Fig. l; Fig. 4 is an elevation, partly broken away and in section, representing another embodiment of the invention.

The frame of the cutter may be of any suitable or preferred construction, but as herein shown, said frame comprises a base A and a post or upright B. The base is provided with feet a, which may be covered with rubber, and said base is also provided with a receptacle a', and with a flange a2. The receptacle a is open at its upper side, in order that the clippings from the cigars may drop therein, and, under some circum stances, the cutter head and cutting mechanism may be depressed far enough to enter this receptacle a. The flange a2 extends from the front and side portions of the base, and the upper surface of said flange is roughened or corrugated to provide a matchstriking surface. The post B is attached in a suitable way to the base A, and said post is channeled or recessed to accommodate the ends of a supporting arm C, and a cutter-actuating arm D.

E designates a cutter head which may be of any suitable construction, but, as shown by the drawings, l prefer to employ a cutter head of the type disclosed in my prior applications filed May 1l, .i90-l, Serial Nos. 207,492 and 207,495. The cutter head 1s provided at its upper side with a finger rest c, the front edge of which is recessed at c, for the reception of a cigar. The base f of the cutter head has a tip hole which is in alinement vertically with the recess c', and on the under side of the cutter head is a guideway g, which receives a slidable cutter Vor knife F. lThe arm D is pivoted at al to the knife, and the other end of the arm is pivoted, by a pin d', within the'channeled or hollow post B. rlhe cutter head 1s held normally in a raised position by a suitable spring, and, as herein shown, the spring G is coiled around the pin d', so that one end of the spring will act against the post, while the other end of said spring presses the arm l) upwardly, and thereby maintains the cutter head E in a raised position.

The sliding cutter F is held in place on the under side of the cutter' head by a pin or whereby the name plate is adapted to be atscrew L, which travels in a slot L, which is provided in the base f of the cutter head, thus limiting the cutter to sliding movement across the tip hole f. I do not desire, however, to coni'ine myself to this particular form of cutting mechanism, because I may employ a pivoted cutter of the construction disclosed by my aforesaid applications.

The important feature of my invention consists in the employment of a name plate I, which, in the preferred embodiment of the invention, is connected pivotally to the post B, and is also connected pivotallyto the cutter head E. The name plate cooperates with the arm C in supporting the cutter head E, and in maintaining said cutter head in an upright position when the cutter head is depressed for the purpose of moving the cutter F across the tip hole. The name plate may be off any suitable construction7 and provided with an inscription, suoli as an advertisement of a particular brand of cigars. As shown, however, the name plate is an open or skeleton frame I, which receives an advertising plate j, covered by a glass plate y", or other transparent material may be used in lieu of the glass plate. The back of the frame I is covered by a spider or plate K, which is attached rigidly to the frame I, and this spider has depending lugs 7c, arranged to straddle the end of the post B,

tached pivotally by the pin z' to the post B. The name plate I normally assumes the inclined position shown by Figs. l, 2 and 3 of the drawings, and the frame I of said name plate is provided with a curved or bent arm Z, the latter being pivoted at z" to the cutter head.

It will be seen that the name plate is pivoted at a point intermediate of its length, as at z', to the post, and it is also pivoted at z" to the cutter head. rIhe arm C is pivoted at its respective ends to the post and the cutter head by pins c, c, respectively, and said arm C, and the plate I, coperate iii supporting and directing the movement of said cutter head E.

Although I have shown the name plate as consisting of an open frame adapted foi the reception of advertising labels or plates, it will be understood that the form and construction of the name plate may be modilied. The particular construction of name plate herein shown is advantageous, however, because it provides for the use of any suitable advertising label or plate in the skeleton ized frame I.

My invention is not restricted to the employment of a pivoted plate, because, in Fig. 4, I have shown a movable name plate, or advertising plate, which is attached directly to the cutter head E. The name plate J is provided at its front edge with an arm J, which may' be attached in any suitable way to the rear side of the cutter head, or, if desired, the cutter head may be cast in one piece with the arm, as shown. The name plate J is at an angle to the cutter head E, for the purpose of displaying the advertising mattei' on said plate, and this name plate is movable up and down with the cutter head. In the particular form of cutter shown by Fig. 4, the cutter head E is supported by parallel arms C, C, each arm having its ends pivoted to the post B, and the cutter head IC.

In the operation of my invention a cigar is placed in the cutter head E, so as to enter the tip hole f', and be guided or held in the recess c of said cuttir head. rflic opei'ator presses downwardly on the cutter head E, or on the cigar, thereby moving the cutter head to the dotted line position lshown in Fig. l. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is l. In a device of the class described, a movable cutter head, and a movable name plate separate from the cutter head and forming a supporting means therefor, said name plate being shifted on its support by the movement of said cutter head.

2. In a device of the class described, a depi'essible cutter head, and a name plate forming one of the supporting devices for said cutter head and adapted to be moved positively thereby.

3. In a device of the class described, a de pressible cutter head, a swinging arm connected to said cutter head and a pivoted name plate pivoted to said cutter head for actuation thereby, said swinging arm and the name plate supporting said cutter head.

5. In a device of the class described, a post or frame, a name plate pivoted to said post or trame, an arm also pivoted to the post, a cutter head pivoted to the name plate and to the arm to be supported thereby, and cutting mechanism independent of the arm and the name plate and operated by a swinging movement of the cutter head.

8. In a device of the class described, a cutter head, a pivoted open frame adapted to receive advertising matter and connected to the cutter head for movement therewith, and means cooperating` with the cutter head and the pivoted frame in supporting the aforesaid cutter head.

9. In a device of the class described, a de pressible cutter head, and a name plate pivoted for movement on a horizontal axis and adapted to be depressed With the cutter head, whereby the name plate is moved automatically to display the same.

In a device of the class described, a depressible cutter head, cutting` mechanism cooperating With said cutter head and operated by the depression thereof, and a movable name plate connected to said cutter head, the position of said name plate with respect to the machine being changed by the movement of the cutter head. i

11. In a device of the class described, a de pressible cutter head provided With a tip hole, cutting1 mechanism coperating with said cutter head and operated by the depression of said head, and an advertising member mounted independently of the cut ting mechanism and having a pivotal connection with the cutter head, said advertising member being` actuated upon the depres sion of the cutter head.

12. In a device of the class described, a depressible cutter head, cutting mechanism cooperating` with said cutter head and operated by the depression thereof, and a movable advertising member supported separately from the cutter head, said advertising member being connected with said cutter head, whereby the position of the advertising,` member with respect to the machine is changed by the movement of the cutter head.
