COMBINED FAN AND WHIP. APPLIUATION FILED SEPT. 23, 1909.`

FATET FFIQE.
ASSIGNOR F ONE-THIRD TO MOSES BEILECI-I AND ONE-THIRD TO MINNIE BERN, BOTH OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED FAN AND WHIP.
To all whom 'it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, MORITZ FoRs'r, a citizen of Austria, residing at New York city, Manhattan, county and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Fans and Vhips, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined fan and whip provided with a common slidable handle which serves to open or close the fan and is held against movement when the device is used as a whip.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a front view of my combined fan and whip, showing the fan open; Fig. 2 is an enlarged top view thereof, showing the fan closed; Fig. 3 a longitudinal section on line 3 3, Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a similar section on line 4 4, Fig. 2, with the covering omitted, and Fig. 5 a cross section on line 5 5, Fig. 3.
The flexible web 10 of the fan is iuted radially so that when opened it will assume a circular shape. To its center or inner end there are secured to web 10 a pair of oppositely placed irst tapes 11 and a pair of similarly placed second tapes 12, the latter extending at right angles to the former. Web 10, when folded, is adapted to be received within a tubular casing 13, to the lower end of which is secured a stick or whip-rod 14. The connection between the latter and casing 13 is shown to be effected by means of a bent strap 15 fitted on the upper tapering end of rod 14 and engaged by a pin 16 extending diametrically across the open lower end of casing 13. This casing is telescoped by a tubular handle 17 provided at its lower end with a conical tip 18 which encircles rod 14 upon which it is guided.

'then around the lower edge thereof, and then upward between the casing and handle 17. Their ends extend outward through slots 2O at the top of handle 17 to which they are pasted. A third pair of tapes 21 are connected at one end to the flanking folds of web 10 near the circumference of the latter and pass with their other end through slots 22 formed in handle 17 directly above slots 19. These tapes 21 are also pasted to the outer side of handle 17 which is provided with a covering 23. In order to guide casing 13 in an axial direction, the ends of pin 16 are extended outwardly to engage a pair of longitudinal grooves 24 formed in handle 17.
If the fan is folded it is entirely inclosed within casing 13 which is, in turn, concealed within handle 17 By pushing the latter down along rod 14, a pull will be exerted on tapes 11 which will thus raise web 10 out of casing 13 and simultaneously unfold the same owing to the action of tapes 21. If the handle is pushed up the web will be folded and drawn into casing 10 by tapes 12. It will be seen that by sliding the handle up or down, the fan may be readily closed or opened. At the same time the connection between the handle and web prevents the former from slipping when the device is used as a whip.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described, comprising a tubular casing, a rod connected thereto, a tubular handle slidable on the casing and rod, a foldable fan adapted to be inclosed within the casing, and tapes that operably connect the handle to the fan.
2. A device of the character described, comprising a tubular casing, a rod connected thereto, a tubular handle slidable on the casing and rod, a foldable fan adapted to be inclosed within the casing, a first pair of tapes extending from the fan to the handle around the top of the casing, and a second pair of tapes extending from the fan to the handle around the bottom of the casino'.
3. A device of the character described, comprising a tubular casing, a rod connected thereto, a tubular handle telescoping the Signed by ine at New York city9 (Mancasing, means for axially guiding olie liandle upon the casing, a conifoi'in tip on the 1909. handle engaging the rod, a oldable fan MORITZ FORSTv adapted to be inclosed Within the casing, lvitnesses:
