To all whom 'it may concern.
Be it known that l, PHILIP LAUT, a citizen oi' the United States of America, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved rotary blower in which the impellers are protected against wear by friction with the casing, without requiring adjustment at their centers and without requiring the removal of the impellers for replacing them with new ones.
The invention consists of a rotary blower the impellers of which are provided with tie tachable heads that are cushioned by a block of elastic material interposed between the body and head and heldin position by con ter-pins and fastening screws so as to keep the heads of the impellers in tight contact with each other and with the interior surface of the casing, and take up the wear of the same.
In the accon'lpanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front-elevation of a rotary blower, and Fig. 2 is a vertical transverse section on line 2, 2, Fig. 1, showing the rotary impellers in vertical transverse section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the views.
Referring to the drawing, 0 represents the casing of a rotary blower which is composed of two semi-cylindrical portions C that are connected by a straight intermediate portion C which is provided with the usual suction a nd discharge-openings. In the cylinders of the casing G are arranged the impellers 13,13 which are of any approved shape, so that the head of one impeller fits tightly into the concavity of the other impeller and to the interior surface of the cylindrical portion C The impellers are supported in the usual manner on shafts S S which turn in bearings in journal-boxes in the heads of the casing, and which are driven by suitable gearing from an electric or other motor M. Each impeller B B is made of a central concave or body portion 1) and separate detachable heads Z2. Between the body-portion b and the heads 6 are interposed blocks 7 of soft rubber or other elastic material which are provided with a plurality of center-holes 0 for the passage of pins 39 that are inserted Specification of Letters Patent.

The outer edges of the elastic blocks f are ground off in line with the contours of the 'curved body-portions and heads. The heads 6 are further connected with the body-portion by means of screwbolts (Z which are screwed into tapped holes d of the body-portion, the heads of the screw-bolts resting on short sleeves d placed in bores b which are drilled parallel with the longitudinal axis of the impeller and closed at their outer ends by means of plugs @17 the ends of which are trimmed oit so as to be in line with the curvature of the heads The screw plugs d serve for preventing any dust or other sediment to settle in the boreholes b and also for preventing the escape of any screw'bolt cl which may be come loose by the vibration of the rotating impellers.
The elastic blocks serve to keep the heads of the impellers tightly in contact with the casing C and also in tight contact with the concaved sides of the body-portions b. When after extended use, the heads of the impellers should wear off, or the elastic blocks diminish slightly in thickness by the pressure of the heads on the same, a thin steel-plate e is interposed between the end or ends of the body Z; of the impeller and the adjacent block or blocks a", said plate being of the same size as the face of the body of the impeller and provided with holes corresponding to the center-pins 79 and screwbolts cZ employed. Vi hen after some time the wear of the heads of the impellers is again noticeable, a second, or even a third, steel-plate may be inserted so as to take up the wear. In Fig. 2, one of the heads is backed up by a steel-plate c. This insertion of the steel-plates for taking up the wear of the heads has to be done when an inspection of the impellers on opening the casing of the blower shows that it is necessary to take up the wear and produce a tighter contact between the heads of the impellers and the interior surface of the casing.
It is obvious that the improved impeller can also be used for gasexhausters and pumps, and dispense with all exterior adjustment of the shafts and other devices for producing a tight fit between the impellers and their casing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. An impeller for rotary blowers etc, consisting of a body-portion, detachable heads, elastic blocks interposed between the body-portion and heads and extending to the full width of the same, means for centrally connecting the elastic blocks and body-portion and heads and extending to the full Width of the same, fixed center-pins passing through the elastic blocks into sockets of the heads, and means for fastening the heads I and blocks to the body-portion.
3. In rotary blowers etc., an impeller consisting of a body-portion and detachable heads, said heads being provided with bores parallel with the longitudinal axis of the impeller, elastic blocks interposed between the body-portion and heads and extending to the full width of the same, center-pins passing from the body-portion through the elastic blocks into sockets of the heads, screw-bolts passing through bores in the heads and elastic blocks into the body-portion, and screwplugs in the outer ends of the bores in the heads.
